Korea's newest national park, Mudeungsan National Park! It became the twenty-first national park of Korea in 2012, and is still so new it doesn't even feature on the National Park website. Before becoming a national park, it was a provincial park. I came to Gwangju a few months ago, but didn't see much of the city, so I vowed to return. This time, I still didn't really see anything of the city, but the real purpose of my visit was to Mudeungsan for a nice autumn hike. I was up at the crack of dawn, after very little sleep, it's been a long time since I slept in a dorm. I took the subway to the Culture Complex station, and took exit three. I found the bus stop with a bit of difficulty, I was on ... read more

Happy Hangeul Day! We left around midnight and drove for about two and a half hours. We arrived in what felt like the middle of nowhere, after the bus driver had done his obligatory duty if getting us lost a couple of times. We were in the grounds/car park of some building. I think it was a town hall kind of thing. We set the tents up. Well I watched as I am clueless about these tings and we tried to get some sleep. It was freezing, so I just spent most of the time shivering with a couple of cat naps. We woke up around half six, some of the others had got a fire going, it was nice to stand in front of that and warm up a bit. I had a banana and ... read more

So, the Asian Games came to Incheon. We knew that it was happening for a while, but there was a complete lack of information online in English. When the timetable for the events came out, we looked to see what was on, that was also a mess, as it wasn't set out very logically. We tried to figure out how to buy tickets, haha not a chance! There was no ticketing option in English, and since we don't have legit ID numbers on our alien cards, (foreigners have either more or less digits, so a lot of websites don't recognise them) we couldn't order tickets online. A friend tried to help us out, by ringing the event organisers. That just made her angry as they never answered the phone, so she rang the Incheon city government, ... read more

13th Sept: We were picked up from the side of the highway, not too long after midnight. We drove through the night. I was unable to sleep and maybe got a twenty minute doze if I was lucky. We arrived at the national park around 4:30 am. We spent some time fannying on, everybody using the toilets, making coffee, and eating breakfast. Around five we left the car par to walk to Jusanji Pond. The pond wasn't too far away, about a fifteen minute walk. It was still pretty dark, when we got there, so we sat and waited for the sun to make an appearance. We didn't have to wait too long, as it soon started to get light. The pond was quite mysterious looking as it was surrounded by mountains and there was fog ... read more

We were up at the crack of dawn again today! Today was our only chance to see the farmers' market, that happens every morning in Takayama. The market started at 6 am, which was a bit too early for us, but we got there around sevenish and had a good look around. The market is along one side of the river bank. There were quite a few different stalls, selling a variety of stuff, not just fruit and veg, but also artwork and other stuff to entice the tourists. We also found out the reason why all the shops close so early, they are all open at 6 am, to coincide with the market. We wandered around the market, I didn't really buy anything, only this interesting food item, which we tried when we were waiting ... read more

It was an extremely early start! We were up around five am and headed to the bus station to buy our tickets. We made sure that we arrived in good time, as there was something we really wanted to try. When we had been in the bus terminal yesterday, we had spied a wall of vending machines, most of them were pretty normal, like what you would find back home, however, there was one that looked amazing. It was a machine that actually vended hot meals! This is what I think of when I think of Japan, a vending machine that can do anything. We had perused the different options yesterday, the machine had quite a selection, and we had decided that fried rice would be our best bet. We deposited our coins, 360 yen, quite ... read more

We were up bright and early and made our way to the bus station. I had definitely slept well on the futon, it was really comfortable. Luckily the bus station is right next door to the train station, so it was really easy to find. We bought our tickets and boarded the bus. It left bang on time, 7:50 am, I love Japanese efficiency. The drive through the countryside was beautiful, and we went through about a million tunnels, it's the only way to get through all the mountains. We made a brief stop at Shirkawago, it looked great, I can't wait to go back there on Tuesday. The journey took just over two hours. at 10 am we were deposited at Kanazawa bus terminal. We found the bus stop for our journey back and also ... read more

Up at the crack of dawn and we made our way across to the airport. We were staying in a hotel near, so it as only a 5 minute drive. We got checked in, because our flight was leaving so early we had our own check-in desks instead of having to use the communal Jeju Air one. The line for security and immigration was huge, why they only have one area open instead of all four, I have no idea. We got through grabbed some food and made our way to the plane. We were about half an hour late taking off, waiting for a slot, Incheon was mad busy, with everyone leaving for the five day holiday. The flight took about an hour and a half, it was a little bit turbulent. We landed at ... read more

15th Aug: We left late the night before from Nambu Bus Terminal in Seoul at 11:30 pm. We were on one of the posh buses only three seats in a row and we were in the first row, so we had loads of leg room to dump our stuff in. The traffic was good, an we arrived in Tongyeong very early, around 3:30 am. We had a lot of time to kill, as we weren't catching the ferry until 7:30. The bus terminal was pretty tiny and ghetto. It was pissing down with rain, so we sought refuge in the only place that was open a 24 hour McDonald's. We all ordered a meal, I had a 1955 burger, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We managed to stay there until about ... read more

Our plan for our final day was to head to the big market because it was a Saturday and the market is only open on the weekends. We were debating how to get there, take the hotel shuttle to the sky train and then take the sky train across the city, or to take a taxi, but by looking on line it seemed that the traffic was really crappy. We decided to get a taxi, at least we could sit in the air-con that way. We paid the extra 50 baht to take the highway and it was dead we got to the market in about 15, maybe twenty minutes, not the 40 minutes to an hour that it said it would take on line. We were deposited by Chatuchak market. I was surprised when we ... read more
