Saturday was quite the day - not so much for sightseeing, but for spectating. And it was an all-Kansas day: I woke up in Kansas, drove around Kansas, and spent the night in Kansas. As I mentioned at the start of this trip, one of the primary reasons to go was to see my TCU Horned Frogs play some football in person. Last night was the first of those games. But before I left home, I found tickets to the Baylor-Kansas football game for $9 online, and I couldn't pass that up. One of my life-goals (because I hate the phrase "bucket list") is to visit all of the FBS football stadiums; what better way to visit than to attend a game? Plus, Baylor is reputed to be a good school (ranked #3 as of this ... read more

The I-70 series: I think that's the hope for baseball fans around here this year; they wanted it last year, but alas. I spent most of my day driving, but the place I spent the most time out of the car was Independence, MO. I made stops in Belleville, IL, and then in St. Louis, Columbia, Independence, and Kansas City. I'm currently at my hotel in Lenexa, KS - the Super 8, because I know how to live the high life. There was only one thing I wanted to see in Belleville, IL - the football stadium for the Lindenwood University-Belleville team. I had done some research for this trip, and it was basically on my way, so I had to see it. After all, it was dubbed "the most original (hideous) stadium" in all of ... read more

It was a rather uneventful journey, as far as car trips go. I only had my GPS and my new (old) Wales air freshener to accompany me. Oh, and the ants still in my car from the trip I took to Tifton a week ago. I left Athens, GA, this morning about 11:30 AM EDT and arrive here in O'Fallon, IL, around 7:30 PM CDT. So, that's just about 9 hours to make the trip. I stopped once, somewhere in the middle of Kentucky, to fuel up and get some food. If you read my blog from this morning, you'll notice that I posted in the midst of an oil change; they told me I needed 2 new tires, but they said it would take 2 hours and cost too much, so I went next door ... read more

Yep, I'm ready to get on the road again. I'm sitting at the Honda place, getting an oil change before I head out for a few days to the Great Plains! I'm adding a map of my trip as planned so far, and you'll notice that the voyage doesn't take me all the way back home. That's because I haven't planned the end of it yet. I'm striking out to attend the next 2 TCU football games - the first in Kansas, the next in Iowa. Since they're both in the Midwest, I decided to just stay out there and discover new things instead of coming back home and driving back out to Iowa in less than a week. I hope to see a few friends along the way, too. Today is the big driving day ... read more

Back in America, but not quite finished with all my travels yet. I'm visiting my family in south Georgia until Monday, when I'm returning to Athens and my current "home." They picked me up at the Orlando airport on Thursday night, and my first food back in the country was Waffle House! And my first drink was some sweet tea! I don't know if it could get more southern than that, at least for a late night stop. I would also like to add that I can, under no circumstances, recommend flying into the Orlando airport - the first thing you face when coming back into the country (or entering it for the first time) is a massive wall of inefficiency at the passport and border controls. Ugh. It also didn't help that it felt like ... read more

Another 4-country day... So this morning, I got up earlier than I wanted, but I guess that's just the excitement of heading back home. Since there really wasn't anyone to check me out of the place, I just left my key in the room and walked downstairs with my bag. I left a couple of bags here and there on my way to the airport bus, my "things to leave in Europe" stuff. It was a pretty pleasant walk to the bus stop - though it was probably a mile to get there. I walked through the Vatican one last time and took some good photos. There was already a line forming to get into St. Peter's, but it wasn't that long yet. Some of the kiosks along the street were just opening up, but no ... read more

Europe » Vatican City May 27th 2015

At least, it's the final FULL day in those places. I'll be flying to Orlando tomorrow afternoon, via Oslo. But this morning I spent in St. Peter's Square for a "general audience" with the Pope, and that was a pretty decent way to cap off this Eurotrip. Eno left on Tuesday morning - early. So that made my day a little more subdued than otherwise. I mean, we did travel around Italy for 10 days together, so now I'm just passing my time, really. There isn't any other sight (tourist or else) that has attracted my interest, so I've just been sitting back and soaking in the atmosphere. It's been more enjoyable for me than I would've thought, but then I have been running ragged for the past couple of weeks. After Eno left, I spent ... read more

Okay - I've been walking back and forth between Rome and the Vatican for a few days now, and since we spent the majority of today in this tiny nation, I'll give an account of all our interactions there. I'll also give you the parts from Rome that happened today, too. They have a post office set up in a trailer in the middle of St. Peter's Square, which is quite convenient for those who want to get Vatican stamps or postcards, or who want to post their cards in the Vatican post box. When we walked through the square on Saturday night, it was already closed. But when we went to the Pentecost service on Sunday morning, they were open for business at least by 10:30. I couldn't believe it - I mean, NOBODY has ... read more

We've walked through the Vatican several times since we got to Rome, but we've scheduled a tour for tomorrow morning, so I'll save all my Vatican adventures for tomorrow's post. But we did stand around in St. Peter's Square this morning for part of the Pentecost Mass. We even got to see il Papa on the big screens. Our hotel is basically attached to the wall surrounding Vatican City, so it's going to be great for getting an early start tomorrow. It's not that great for when you want to see all the sights of Ancient and Renaissance Rome. But we had a mostly enjoyable time walking between here and the ancient monuments. We started out walking towards the Tevere River (known as the Tiber River in ancient times) and crossed over that on our way ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 23rd 2015

I wasn't really expecting to be in Florence today at the start of this trip, but that's nothing new. I was quite happy to go, especially now that I've been to the Uffizi. In case you didn't know, Italy has a lot of art. Florence is where the Renaissance started, after all. So they've got a good reason to be proud of all the art that their city has produced. The Uffizi is the largest gallery in town, and we found that out first hand. It was about a 15-minute walk from the train station to the Uffizi, but we got to admire the Arno River for a good part of that. Once we got to the Uffizi, we found out just how popular it was - I guess we waited in line for an hour ... read more
