So I made a big mistake the day before this trip, and I continued it this morning. Shoes. That's right - new shoes. Specifically new hiking boots. I bought them because, well, I plan on hiking through a good bit of jungle during the next 10 days, and I thought some waterproof, high durability, high top shoes would be the best option. I was wrong. Or partly wrong. If I had had time to break them in, or if they weren't oddly constructed, then maybe I wouldn't have massive blisters in at least 4 spots on my feet. At least 2 on each foot, maybe more, but only time will tell. Alas, that made part of my day in Chicago (one of my favorite American cities, in spite of the so-called carnage) more miserable than I ... read more

We've had a pretty good trip, a couple of sicknesses notwithstanding. Two days of skiing in the books, an hour and a half of tubing later on today to go. We left Milledge Ave Baptist Church in Athens, GA, on Friday afternoon at 5PM for a weekend of skiing at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia. None of us had ever been here, though many of us had gone skiing before. Our typical church-youth-group skiing trip had been at Winter Place, WV, since at least 2005. But we decided to try something new this year, since we had a majority of students who had not made that destination a tradition for themselves yet. There have been some perks to this place, as well as a few things to get used to. The first thing was the distance. Many ... read more

One of the greatest experiences in the history of college football is the Cotton Bowl, and now I can say I've seen it live. I started my master's degree in Science Education at Western Michigan University back in September. I had no idea that they would do as well as they did; few people outside the program itself probably had any inclination that the team would go undefeated in the regular season, win their conference championship, and then play in the Cotton Bowl. That was a pipe dream, but it was as good as anyone could hope for. And now, here we are on January 2, 2017, and the WMU Broncos did all of those things. Last year was the first bowl game win ever for the program, and this year they break through and go ... read more

Glitz, glamour, and the Eiffel Tower! Well, at least the last one can be found in Paris, Texas. After I left Texarkana, my next stop was Paris, another town I had heard about in many ways over the years. I decided it wouldn't be so bad to spend New Year's Eve in Paris, even if it wasn't Paris, France. So this was the next-best thing. It was less than 90 minutes from Texarkana to Paris. My first stop was the Eiffel Tower, which is only about 20 years old. It's also only about 30 feet tall, but it has the distinction of having a cowboy hat at the top. The structure is beside the town's convention center, which is really in the middle of nowhere. There's also a school about half a mile away. And next ... read more

I had heard about this town in numerous media - songs, TV, writings, etc. So when I saw that it was a great stopping point on my way between the Liberty Bowl and the Cotton Bowl, I decided to take the opportunity to explore. I've visited Kansas City, another city that's split between two states, but I think Texarkana - as the name implies - embraces that dual identity better. The city seems to be centered around State Line Ave, a street that literally divides the town down the border between Texas and Arkansas. The Post Office is also right on that border, and it's a great tourist trap for photographers. They've set up a "photographer's island" in front of the Post Office just for that purpose, so that you're not in the middle of the ... read more

The first leg of my holiday road trip is over! Those who know me know that I go to many college football games, especially those associated with schools I attend or have attended. It was a rare treat that my first two universities from the FBS of college football played each other - basically two bowl games for the price of one. I am speaking, of course, of the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The University of Georgia played Texas Christian University today at 11 AM central time. I graduated from UGA in 2011 and TCU in 2016, and I will admit that most of my sympathies were with the one that I have a longer relationship with. But that didn't mean I was only going to support them. It was an odd experience for someone who ... read more

I've made it back home now, after driving over 4500 miles in the past 19 days. I enjoyed the slower pace of the past 48 hours. Once I got to the Cincinnati Reds game on Tuesday night, the trip really became a leisurely affair. Isn't that how vacation should be? I guess we tend to try and pack as much into our off-time as we can, and sometimes that makes us even more exhausted than when we left. I was glad to have the time over the final two days of my trip to wind down and feel a bit more relaxed. Now that I'm back in Athens, I have a lock-in with the youth group tomorrow night from 6PM-8AM and then have to be on call for Sunday School the next day at church. So ... read more

And from here on out, I'm not really doing anything touristy. I'm having lunch with an old friend today in Lexington, staying with a pair of old friends in Middlesboro, and then seeing some new friends in Knoxville on Thursday. This will likely be my final blog for this trip, though I haven't ruled out doing a wrap-up on Friday before putting this trip to rest. That being said, yesterday was a bit of a whirlwind, since I planned to visit 3 college stadiums and a presidential site on top of driving a total of 5 hours and get to a baseball game by 7PM. I left my hotel in Cleveland just after 8AM and headed to the first 2 colleges: Kent State and Akron. They're less than 15 miles apart, so it was an easy ... read more

Another day of driving and baseball. I've hit the home stretch of this trip, since I'm now back in America and every place I visit brings me closer to where I started - Georgia. I woke up in Canada but was back in the US before noon. It's been a 3-state-and-1-province day, and I now find myself in my first hotel room since my first night in Canada. And only the third of the whole trip. I've never seen this part of Ohio before, but it really does look like most of the rest of it. Checking out of my dorm this morning was a painless process. I was out of the parking deck before 8AM and heading south towards Niagara Falls. I've seen the falls twice before, once from each national side; the Canadian side ... read more

For those who read my blog yesterday, I have good news - the painkillers, the bandage, the a/c, and even the hard bed combined to give me the best night of sleep I've had in almost a week! There were points when I was walking around this afternoon when I completely forgot that I had any rib problems, or even that I was still wearing the wrap. I'd have to be very conscious about it to remember. That was great, and I still feel pretty good tonight. I've taken off the wrapping for a while, to let it breathe, to let my skin get a reprieve, and then to take a shower. But once I'm done with that, back on it will go until tomorrow night's shower. What a difference a day makes! My main objective ... read more
