Today was a lot of driving. I mean, a lot. I didn't really see a lot, or at least as much as I normally do in a day on this road trip. But I did get to see some good people and have an unexpected pilgrimage of sorts. So that's fun. First off, I slept a little later than normal, but I was back in the Eastern Time Zone for the first morning, so I'm having to readjust to that. I guess my body is still on Central Time. No big deal, just an hour. Unless you factor in that you told someone you would meet them at X time and now that's an hour earlier for you. That's probably the biggest thing about doing a solo road trip vs. meeting up with people: you can't ... read more

I'm not going to include a city in the location for this post, since there really wasn't one single place I stayed longer than the others. Truly, I've been in Toldeo, Ohio, now longer than any place I visited in Michigan. But since the overwhelming bulk of the day was in Michigan, I'll just leave it at that. The day started in Illinois, and by the time I finished, I had been in 4 states: Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, too. My absolute first stop was for gas and a breakfast pizza at Casey's General Store, which Beth had told me about on Saturday and for which I had been searching. I found it, bought it, ate it, and loved it. Then I made my way to the NIU campus to find Huskie Stadium. Check. I had ... read more

Now that I’m at the hotel, I can certainly say that I’m pretty glad that today is over. I guess the excitement from yesterday turned into a bit of a crash today. I’ve had a really hard time staying awake at times, but needless to say, I made it to my destination for the evening safely. The hotel I stayed at last night in Des Moines had little in the way of food, but I had wanted to try one of those breakfast pizzas at Casey’s, which Beth had told me about. My first stop after leaving the hotel was Casey’s for gas and breakfast. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any breakfast pizzas. Bummer. And while we’re talking about gas stations, I gotta say: Iowa, get it together. I get that you have corn in your gas, ... read more

Well, now that I've attended the 2nd of 2 TCU road games in a row, the ostensible reason for my Great Plains road trip is at an end. But that doesn't mean I intend to go directly back to Athens, GA (a.k.a. home). I'm planning on taking a circuitous route of sorts, so while I won't be in the Great Plains anymore, the road trip will continue a few more days. I saw the first familiar face in about 10 days this morning - Beth, a friend from my days of working summers at Camp Westminster, and who also attended McAfee School of Theology with me. She had seen my blog a few days back and asked whether we could work out to meet up since I would be coming to Iowa. I was happy to ... read more

Today was the first completely unplanned day of this road trip - I didn't expect even to set foot in Minnesota, but thanks to an unexpected message from a friend, my trip took this detour. And it was a very good day. I did a lot of driving, but it didn't really seem like that much (except in road work; see below). One of the benefits of driving through Minnesota during this time of year is all the great foliage you can see. The leaves are changing colors, and at times it can be almost as distracting as those mountains and badlands from further out west. The best display of foliage I saw today was at St. Olaf College, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I left my hotel in South Dakota before dawn, and I ... read more

This was a day I had been looking forward to on this trip since the start. And it did not disappoint. I guess I was anticipating it so much, I woke up around 5:30 and couldn't get back to sleep! Deadwood is very quiet in the morning. Some might call it "dead," but I'm above puns. It was also exceptionally chilly - about 28 F. But the morning drive to the Crazy Horse Memorial while the sun was coming up over the Black Hills was unbeatable. I took a few pictures while I was driving, always at places where it would be safe - and there was zero traffic on the road at 7 AM. It took an hour to get to the memorial from Deadwood, but once there, it was a breeze to get around. ... read more

I didn't really get to do much today, since the drive was massive. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy what I did get to do. My day started off in Morrill, NE, where I had stayed at the Oak Tree Inn - a place I highly recommend if you ever find yourself in town. Next to it is Penny's Diner, and this thing is right out of the 1950s. Inside, it's like a Waffle House, but less grimy. The food was good, greasy, and quick to arrive. All things you hope for in a diner experience. The service was great, and I really didn't have to eat again until much later in the day. I took my time this morning, since I knew I could get some much-needed sleep before starting the 4-hour drive to ... read more

I'm back in Nebraska for what I hope is the last time on this trip. I came here to see a couple of really cool geological sights before I head back up north into Wyoming and South Dakota tomorrow. The two places I visited, Scotts Bluff and Chimney Rock, were exceptional. One of the things that surprised me today was the sun. The temperature never got over 75 F, but the sun was brutal. I felt like I was in Texas again with 100+ degree temperatures, shading my arms and bare skin in the car as I rode around. And when I got to the top of Scotts Bluff for the fantastic views, I felt quite unprotected. I brought bug spray on this trip, but I didn't think sunscreen would be necessary in October, this far ... read more

I tried to do as Columbus did, and infect an indigenous population with smallpox, but I failed miserably. On the flip side, I did manage to see some spectacular landscapes - to the point that they almost became a real distraction while I was driving. After a pretty dull 3-hour drive from Nebraska to Denver, I was ready to see some stuff. Along the way, I saw no purple mountains' majesty, but I did happen upon quite a few amber waves of grain. I first caught a glimpse of the Rockies around 10 AM MDT, and it has been over 10 years since my last viewing. I'm more of a mountain guy than a beach guy, so it was a sort of zen moment for me to see them again. I just got more and more ... read more

I wasn't sure where I was going to stop when I started this day, but I decided on staying in Nebraska for a couple of reasons. First was the fatigue and work factor: yesterday was the least driving I had done on this trip, but being in the sun and in a College Football atmosphere for several hours takes its toll, not to mention the excitement of the game itself. The other factor is money. Hotels in Colorado (my next stop) are expensive! Denver, you would imagine; but 1.5 hours outside Denver and still twice what I'm paying here in North Platte, Nebraska. There's a magical line at the border called taxes and cost of living, I guess. I'll pass on paying for those things. My hotel in Kansas was certainly not the Ritz, but it ... read more
