We've enjoyed chilling at our Siesta Key Bungalows all weekend. There are little lizards everywhere, and, as long as they're not jumping out at me, I enjoy hunting for them to snap photos. We had a gecko visit us in our bungalow yesterday. Our rental complex is filled with palm trees and has a running fountain. At the lagoon, there is a dock to stand at to watch local birds (ducks, pelicans, and more) as well as jumping fish. One bird makes a really loud call, and Oliver gets excited whenever he hears it. He tells me it's a monkey, and that he loves the monkey. Along the lagoon, they built a sandy area for sitting and relaxing. Oliver enjoys filling his bucket and dumping it back out.... read more

We took our little beach bums to Siesta Key Public Beach this afternoon with my parents, my sister, my brother, and my sister-in-law. It's advertised as the number one beach in the country. It reminded me a lot of Pacific Beach in San Diego but with fewer waves and finer sand. We parked in a fairly full lot, and I wondered how people manage to find parking in peak season. There is probably a quarter mile of beach to walk through to get to the ocean, so I think you need a certain level of mobility to get to the ocean itself. There was a handicap-accessible boardwalk, but the boardwalk is far from the shore. The temperature was comfortable in the 70s, but it was cloudy with wind The temperature was comfortable in the 70s, but ... read more

My parents are treating us to a long weekend in Siesta Key, Florida. We arrived yesterday afternoon, and, already, I'm adapted to the warm weather, lush vegetation, and humid environment. Vacation enduces such contentment. The kids were really well-behaved on our nonstop flight to Tampa. They slept for our hour and half drive south. Our destination was the Siesta Key Bungalows. We jumped on a Groupon deal, and my parents got our bungalows for half off. The complex is laid-back and exudes some beach bum elegance (is there such a thing?). We're right on a a salt water lagoon (Heron Lagoon) that is teeming with jumping fish and pelicans. There was a light rain last night, and Andrew and I sat outside of our bungalow in our white, wicker chairs, soaking it all in (literally). When ... read more

I really haven't adjusted to the time change at all. Last night, I didn't fall asleep until 3am, and I woke up at 2pm. Andrew and I were left with about two hours of daylight. We went to Old Town to try to do the Real Mary King's Close tour. It came highly recommended on Trip Advisor and from the owner of our bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, they were sold out for the rest of the day. We strolled along the Royal Mile instead and then went back to the Christmas Festival at the Princes Street Gardens. In the morning, we're getting up early to catch the Airlink 100 to the airport. I've really enjoyed Edinburgh. It's a beautiful city that's easy to navigate. It's perfect for getting around on foot. Things aren't all that expensive, ... read more

Andrew and I booked a private day tour through Mini Tours Scotland. I wanted to get a chance to see more of Scotland than Edinburgh, but I didn't want to rent a car because it is expensive and I didn't want to have to stress about driving in a foreign country on the other side of the road. A tour was the perfect solution! After breakfast, Craig picked us up in his van. We drove into the countryside, over the Firth of Forth, and into the region of Fife. He took us into some small fishing villages. Well, they used to be fishing villages. Apparently, that industry isn't as prominent today as it has been. Today, they are sleepy little towns that border lovely rock beaches. They attract local families on holiday but aren't very bustling ... read more

We booked a murder mystery tour through Witchery Tours. We were to meet in front of the Witchery restuarant, near the castle, at 7pm. Our route took us through the Princes Street Gardens, where we grabbed another Toastie from the German Christmas Market for dinner. The air was dense and wet, and it started to rain. Not wanting to be late, we arrived at the Witchery entirely too early and sat outside in the cold and wet for a while. Across the street, we watched a line (or "queue," as it were) form. This wasn't just any line. The line wound from the castle above us down the streets below and out of sight. Literally, the line was over a mile long. I asked a woman what people were queueing for, and she explained to me ... read more

Today is St Andrew's Day! St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, and we so happen to be here on this holiday. Castles and cathedrals don't charge admission today, and so we took the opportunity to check out the sights. Admission is normally £14.50 a pop, so Saint Andrew saved us a pretty penny. We cut through the Princes Street Gardens into Old Town and followed the Royal Mile up to Edinburgh Castle. I say "up" because the walk up to the castle is very steep. First, the castle is on top of an old volcano, giving it good height that I'm sure made it an ideal location for a fortress. Second, people have occupied that area for 3,000 years, and the road designs that were developed are very old. Andrew joked, "I don't think ... read more

Edinburgh, Scotland. Andrew and I traveled a quarter of the way around the globe thanks to the airfare we won in a British Airways contest. It's unbelievable, really. I'd worried that I would have a very hard time understanding the Scottish people. I've heard some very strong Scottish accents before, and I had a difficulty following what was being said. The accent in Edinburgh isn't all that strong. It's strong enough to be unique and lovely, but it's not so strong that I'm left feeling like we're speaking two different languages! Funny thing is, many people have been having difficulty understanding me! I hadn't thought of that. On our flights, the stewardesses had to clarify everything I said a number of times. Two resorted to asking me yes and no questions! I felt bad, and, so, ... read more

The drive from our house (outside of Denver) to Aspen is about 3.5 hours. Vail is close to the halfway point, so we stopped there on the way in and out. The town is cute--very European. We window shopped and checked out the statues and skipped along the cobblestone streets. On our trip out, we stopped and ate the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I'd packed on the edge of an empty fountain. I assume they'd emptied the fountain in preparation for winter. I might be a bad parent, but I let Oliver climb in there. Why not? On our way back home, we stopped again in Vail. We grabbed a cup of coffee at the Starbucks next to a stream, and then we let Oliver play on the edge of the stream. He enjoyed throwing ... read more

We ended up spending two nights and one full day in Aspen. We knew we wanted to see Maroon Bells, so we went in the morning. The rest of our day was open to exploring. While Oliver napped, Jo and I took a stroll. She wasn't very happy to be stuck in her stroller, but I kept handing her leaves (her favorite), so she tolerated it. We stayed at the Annabelle Inn on Main Street in Aspen, thanks to a great deal I managed to score on one of those discount hotel websites. The hotel was quaint and absolutely everything you'd want on a trip to the mountains. The innkeeper and assistant manager were very friendly and helpful. I asked for a lunch recommendation in walking distance, and the innkeeper recommended Pyramid Bistro. He said it's ... read more
