Wednesday 16th, Thursday 17th July 2014 Both of these days were work days for Judy, she having to mark over 50 university assignments. Victor worked most of his required 15 hours at the golf course, Helen and Rags doing their own thing. The postal service delivered a parcel for Rags, this being a gear set for the bike he intends to build when we get back. Much cheaper to buy here in USA and postage is free as well. First thing this morning Rags took one of the bikes out for a ride around the suburb. He did prove that the approach road to where we are staying comes to a dead-end if approached from the south, as he rode through dense vegetation and water trying unsuccessfully to get through. Even so, the 15kms or so ... read more

Monday 14th July 2014 The Everglades National Park was the planned destination for the next two days and Victor once again volunteered to drive. All we took with us was a change of clothes and our bathers, plus cameras, esky, laptop, shoes etc, and the Toyota Highlander (Kluger) was full. The 120 kms flew by we reaching the town of Naples where we booked into the La Quinta hotel. They wouldn't honour the coupons we had for a reduced rate, saying they were out of date but would discount it to within 90 cents using Rags' RAC card. Rather pedantic but we were glad we remembered to take our card with us. Reciprocal benefits with the AA exist and we knew this from previous visits. Lovely clean, large rooms. Off we went further south to the ... read more

Thursday 10th July 2014 Today was a travel day, as we headed for Victor & Helen's home in Punta Gorda about 300kms away. The only stop we made was at Lake Okeechobee, just over half way, to have lunch. This lake is huge by our standards, fresh water and over 60kms wide with the depth around 4 metres. No shortage of water here! We had a lunch we purchased at Okeechobee on the way in, sitting under a shelter high up above the lake. Beautiful view across the lake, so wide you couldn't see the other side. Power and fan boats were seen, these set up for fishing the perch and bass in the lake. As what seems to be common here in any waterway, alligators also live there, putting a dampener for those wanting to ... read more

Tuesday 8th July 2014 Today our destination was to a hotel near Titusville which is close to the Kennedy Space Centre which we intend to visit tomorrow. We left the motel at 0830hrs just grabbing a coffee and a little bit to eat as we are stopping at Cracker Barrels, just down the road, as Victor and Helen enjoy the breakfasts there. This was true to form, with huge helpings, we being smart this time and sharing a plate of fried egg, bacon, ham & sausage, plus fried spuds, toast, grits and stewed apples plus unlimited coffee, all for $15 including a good tip. Enough protein to keep us going until this evening. But I think Judy enjoyed the attached shop which had all sorts of knick knacks as much as, if not more than, the ... read more

Sunday 6th July 2014 Today we drove to our next stop, St Augustine, just under 300kms south of Savannah, although we ended up travelling a fair bit more than that. We set off with Brunswick punched into the GPS (what a marriage saver that is) which was just over half way. The town was deserted, we drove through it without seeing a shop open, a police car the only other vehicle around. Just outside of town we came across an interesting bridge so we stopped to stretch our legs and take some photos. Here we met some locals fishing, and talked to a couple of them. Even though they didn't seem to be catching much, one of them summed it up by saying he just enjoyed being out fishing. It wasn't the act of catching a ... read more

Thursday 3rd July 2014 The final pack before we left was a little hectic, where did all the extra stuff come from when we haven't done any shopping? We also now have an Esky (cooler box) thanks to Ili and Allan, but carrying it to the train and car hire place caused Rags a few headaches. Thanks to a bunch of occy straps we bought we managed to attach it to the top of one of the cases and we had no problems with it. After arriving at the airport by train we had to catch one of their inter-terminal trains to get to the car hire section. It is then that you realise how large the airport is as we traveled several kilometres by train to the rental car stop. Here we were given the ... read more

Thursday, 26th June 2014 Today was a very long day. In fact from just after 0400hrs when our friend Mark picked us up to take us to the airport to the time we reached our hotel in Atlanta, we had been travelling for 27 hours and it was still just after 1900hrs on the same day! The three flights we had were uneventful, Perth – Sydney, Sydney – Dallas, Dallas – Atlanta. We were lucky in that we were given seats with plenty of legroom on the second leg, almost as good as an upgrade. After we checked in at the Hotel Twelve we showered and went downstairs to eat. Although we were both really tired we thought we should have some food in our stomachs before trying to sleep. Judy had a lovely salmon dish ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna June 4th 2014

Wednesday 4th June 2014 We were down at the port by 0930 and sat around for a while in the nearby park before going down to the pier where the ferry was to come in. It seemed that it would be late as it hadn't arrived when scheduled. We stood on the pier and started a conversation with tow American ladies - mother and daughter who were traveling together. The time soon went and just in time, the ferry pulled up, took all of about 20 passengers on board and left exactly on 1030 as scheduled. The 90 min trip up the Danube River, against a strong current, went smoothly, the big diesel engines driving the water jets had the boat travelling at about 25 knots. There wasn't much scenery, mainly forest which grew to the ... read more

Europe » Slovakia » Bratislava Region » Bratislava June 1st 2014

Sunday 1st June 2014 Well, we did it again. We changed our minds on where we were going next, we have decided to go through Slovakia to Bratislava, before going to Vienna. It was just by chance that we saw that trains go that way and as we were only in Bratislava for less than 24hours in 2001 decided to renew our acquaintance. We arrived at the station in Valtice just before 1000 and then became a little worried when there was no-one else there for the first morning train at 1016. As it was Sunday we thought there may be a different timetable. Our worries were unfounded, people started to arrive and when the train did arrive there must have been 20 people there. At Breclav station we had to wait a little while before ... read more

Friday 30th May 2014 What a difference a good night's sleep makes. We both awoke at an early hour (0530) to the sound of roosters crowing, pigeons cooing and cuckoos cukooing. By just after 0700 we were down in the dining area for breakfast, the staff just finishing setting it up. Not only did they have muesli and yoghurt, they actually had a fairly decent coffee too. Apart from the ubiquitous cheese and meat they also had a huge bowl of cherries. We have seen several large cherry trees in the vicinity including one in the hotel grounds that was simply loaded with cherries. We took our time over breakfast and getting ready to go out but by about 1000 we went out to have a look at the huge Baroque chateau here. We found a ... read more
