Tuesday 14th April 2015 Judy was a little sad at leaving Canberra, there were still places to see and she enjoyed the people we had met. We hope to keep in touch with John & Ann, who are from WA. Maybe we’ll return to Canberra to complete our exploration at some future time. After our farewells we set off towards Yass, not really having an end destination in mind but knowing there was a good free campsite at Carcoar Dam, about 250kms north of us. Yass is a big town, the commercial centre for the many large farms around it. It was one of the early towns in the settlement of NSW and there were many buildings dating back to the late 1800s. Parking for our rig was at scarce and we only saw a ... read more

Tuesday 7th April 2015 The rain ensured that we would wake up to a surprise; we were sitting in the only puddle in the parking area! Never mind, careful steps on tip-toe and the unit was moved. We arrived at the Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) just after 1000, only to find that a Folk Festival had been held during the weekend and the tents and stages were still being dismantled. A phone call to the manager informed us that the grounds wouldn’t be opened to caravans until after 1300. Several other caravans joined us in the adjoining carpark during the morning, camping here being cheaper and more convenient to the city centre than commercial parks. One couple, Doug & Nikki, were most friendly and we spent some time talking to them. Doug is a teacher, ... read more

Tuesday 31st March 2015 We left Sale at about 1000 very pleased with the caravan park fees only $17/night for both nights with a power cost of $4.75. This park is well worth stopping at if you are in the area. First stop was Bairnsdale, a couple of hours away, and after a walk down the typical country main street, we went to Maccas for lunch as we are getting rather addicted to their toasted ham, cheese and tomato sandwiches! After this we stopped in at the Information Centre next door and a very helpful lady gave us some ideas of what to see and where to stay. After checking out the old church next door, the only thing worth seeing in the town in her opinion, we went to Cheap Auto Parts over the ... read more

Saturday 28th March 2015 What a special day! Started off with John’s weekend breakfast of bacon, silver beet and poached egg on toast, then off in the new van on our 16th wedding anniversary. Can’t get much better than that! We traveled rather sedately, the roads were wet from the light drizzle we were experiencing and Rags was very aware that he had a new van in tow. Normally he watches his rear view and gets a little stressed when someone sits on his tail. We now have a rear view camera displaying what is behind us and Rags was quite content to let them pass us when they could. Lang Lang was our first stop, this little town only about 50kms from Somerville. We walked up and down the main street of this well ... read more

Sunday 22nd March 2015 Today we drove the 80kms or so north to Richard & Carol’s place in Donvale for lunch. Carol is a good friend of Judy’s, they met in Perth when they were both having children and were close friends until Carole moved to Melbourne for her husband's job. We stayed with them on a previous trip and enjoyed catching up with them. After lunch we went for a drive in the Dandenongs which was along winding roads with lots of Sunday drivers. We had a coffee overlooking Melbourne, although it wasn’t a very clear view due to the smog and smoke below. A bit of window shopping followed in the nearby village, Olinda, before we returned to where we dropped them off and headed back to Somerville. Back in Somerville, John had ... read more

Thursday 19th March 2015 Our stay here in Tasmania is coming to an end and today we thought we’d do a few things we had talked about doing over the last few weeks. We had breakfast at the Mermaid Cafe, which is at the ferry harbour in Kettering. Here a very pleasant young lady served us a large dish of bacon and eggs with toast and coffee for the princely sum of $10 each (this is their happy hour deal which we read about in the local paper and goes from 9.30 to 10.30am). We spent about an hour there, enjoying the view of the marina, watching the ferry to Bruny Island leave with a load of cars, and reading the Mercury, the Tasmanian morning paper. Most civilised! On a previous trip to the peninsula opposite ... read more

Wednesday 18th March 2015 The skies were grey this morning and rain appeared to be threatening but we have learnt that grey skies don't mean rain or much rain here in Hobart and the skies often clear as the day progresses so we decided to take the risk and drive the 90 minutes to the Mount Field National Park. The trip there was uneventful, the scenery changing as we followed the Derwent River upstream. Tasmania isn’t all green, as we saw where the paddocks had turned the same dry, brown colour we get at home. We passed lots of old buildings as well as hops farms so there was always something to see. On reaching the entrance to the park we found that it was divided into two sections and the one centred around Lake Dobson ... read more

Tuesday 17th March 2015 Today we stayed local; first up we visited the Channel Heritage Centre here in Margate. This centre was set up to promote and preserve the history and heritage of the local area. It sits on an old quarry site which is leased from the Council on a 99 year lease at a peppercorn rent. It was originally opened in 1979 in two rooms of a house and has grown over the years until it finally graduated to this purpose built building in it's more visible site on Channel Highway. We spent some time here reading displays which began with the history of the local indigenous people. Later displays covered the early explorers, the timber, fruit growing and scalloping industries, farming, shipping in the Channel, as well as about the local schools, sporting ... read more

Monday 16th March 2015 MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, is considered to be one of the top attractions of Hobart. It is the largest privately funded museum in Australia and was founded in 2001 by Tasmanian millionaire, David Walsh. This was where we headed this morning. It is set in the Moorilla Winery about 20kms from Hobart on cliffs overlooking the Derwent River. There were very few signs showing where to enter the museum from the carpark and we wandered past the winery with its workers going about their normal business. An unassuming building near the cliff edge was where other people were entering through a curved metal façade. The museum is set with 3 levels underground, is a warren of tunnels connecting display areas. The displays consisted of static, electronic, mechanical, auditory, ... read more

Thursday 12th March 2015 Today was a ‘day of rest’, neither having much energy and wanting to catch up with a few chores. The washing was done and the Blog was up-to-date by the end of the day. We did get out just before lunch, driving to nearby Kingston to check out the Channel Shopping Centre there. We wandered around for an hour and only purchased a few supplies for lunch and dinner. Overall, we thought it wasn't very pedestrian friendly and wondered how the shops stayed in business as there were few customers about. On the way home we dropped into “The Margate Train”, a group of tourist-biased shops set in railway carriages with a steam locomotive at the front. Interesting, but we only drove off with a packet of fresh licorice for their ... read more
