Asia March 10th 2017

Wednesday 8th March and Thursday 9th March 2017 We keep on saying we aren’t going to travel overseas for a while, instead travel Australia more in our caravan, but some-one always seems to make a suggestion or invite us to go away. This time our friends Helen and David, from Queensland, mentioned they were going to Japan around now and why didn’t we meet up with them? So here we are and we catch up with them next week for 4 or 5 days in Hiroshima. It’s been a hard 24 hours we’ve just endured, but it almost feels worth it with our feet up and drinking a few Bushmills whisky that we picked up duty free. We booked our trip using our Qantas Frequent Flyer points, claimed our free Qantas Club Lounge passes we get ... read more

Saturday 24th September 2016 On our way today, with an 0830hrs start after Judy had downloaded the assignments which were due last night. The wind had swung during the night and was now a strong and gusty NE. This made for good fuel consumption once we were on the highway, although the buffeting from the side had us cut back on our speed. The Pardoo Roadhouse was our first stop where we could not go past their famous $10 coffee and a large home-made sausage roll each for a late morning tea/early lunch. These salt laden, greasy sausage rolls were delicious! We had intended to head to Caper Keraudren from here but after reading the negative Wikicamps' comments we had changed our minds and now drove only another 90 minutes or so to the DeGrey River ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » 80 Mile Beach September 23rd 2016

Wednesday 21st September 2016 We left fairly early this morning, with the temperature almost being cool enough for a warm top. This didn’t last long, although at no stage during the day were we as hot as we had been. The temperatures are dropping as we head south. We didn’t stop at Sandfire Roadhouse, which we passed on our way to our destination today, 80 Mile Beach, as we had plenty of fuel and were only driving less than 150kms today. Caravan park fees are exorbitant here compared to other places we have been to with stipulations that you don’t use your washing machines or showers whilst in the camp, you need to use the ones provided. We booked in for 2 nights and set up camp with Marlene and Chris under several shady trees. We ... read more

Thursday 15th September 2016 Today we revisited Kununurra. We drove to the town centre and then looked through the aboriginal art centre, the outdoor camping shops, the Argyle diamond shops, Coles, and any other that we came across. Not a lot seemed to have changed since we did the same 5 years ago. There is now a new self-serve diesel pump available for public use just out of town and we took advantage of the 15 cents/litre price difference to the town outlets. The afternoon was spent in the resort pool, where we were joined by several of the campers adjoining us. The temperature of the pool water was perfect and with the shade-cloth sails above the pool, it made for a pleasant dip in-between reading our books. Friday 16th September 2016 Today we decided to ... read more

Tuesday 15th September 2016 We woke to the raucous cacophony of the birds in the trees in the park at about 0600hrs. By 0630hrs we had ourselves out of bed to start another glorious day. On the road by 0830hrs, quite relaxed after having another shower and talking to our neighbours before leaving. The temperature was already in the high 20s so we were happy to be in the aircon of the car. Our first stop was at about 1030 hrs just after entering the Gregory National Park. Sullivan Campground is designated rest/camp spot with seats and bbqs under trees next to the Victoria River. This is the longest river in the Northern Territory, about 560kms long. From here we continued to the Victoria River Roadhouse sitting on the river’s bank with a long traffic bridge ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Katherine September 15th 2016

Friday 9th September 2016 After a restless night we set off at about 0830hrs for Katherine. We farewelled Mark and Helena, hoping they catch up to us later in the trip if things work out. We were settled into the Riverview Caravan Park well before lunchtime and set off for a visit to the main town. Katherine does very little for either of us; the town has many indigenous locals wandering around the town, some very vocal in their discussions with each other, many just sitting outside the malls and liquor outlets. Very sad. A large Woolworths seems to be the base of the town’s food outlets and we spent some time there replenishing our stores. The afternoon was spent in the cool of the van, the temperature in the high 30s. Later in the afternoon ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Daly Waters September 10th 2016

Saturday 3rd September 2016 Last night we all agreed that we would move northwards and Barrow Creek Roadhouse, 280kms away, was to be our stop for the night. Mark and Helena decided they were going to do more sightseeing before leaving and as we hadn’t been through the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens we went there. Good decision, the Olive Pink Botanic Garden was well worth going to. Miss Olive Pink was an unconventional anthropologist who championed the welfare of the aborigines from the 1940s, a botanical artist and a woman ahead of her time in promoting the cultivation of Australia's native plants. The garden consists of more than 600 plant species from all over Central Australia including 33 that are rare or endangered. The garden was opened to the public in 1985. We set off climbing ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Mataranka September 8th 2016

Tuesday 6th September 2016 A great sleep was had at Daly Waters, with the temperature being very pleasant and allowing us to sleep without either lots of blankets, or with the air conditioner on. Breakfast was had outside in the shade of the trees under which we had parked. Today was going to be a very easy day, the total distance to our destination of Mataranka only being about 175kms. First stop was at about the half-way mark, Larrimah. We approached this town via the old WW2 airstrip, the old runway now the main street of this town. A few occupied houses were passed, the population of the town was “nine including my dog”, according to the publican of the Pink Panther Hotel, the main building in the town. We spent a little time here, reading ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs September 2nd 2016

Saturday 27th August 2016 We left Uluru this morning; we headed for Alice Springs, Mark and Helena to Kings Canyon. Mark and Helena want to drive the dirt road between Kings Canyon and Alice (The Mareenie Loop) and as we couldn't consider dragging our caravan over this we've decided to continue directly to Alice on the bitumen road, having been to King's Canyon in the past. We did meet up for morning coffee at a rest stop about 150kms up the road, before the others took the side road to the Gorge and we headed on to Erldunda, the turn-off northwards. Here we had lunch and set off up the Stuart Highway until we reached the Finke River crossing, about 120kms before Alice Springs. Several other vans were already there and we joined them on a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Ayers Rock August 30th 2016

Tuesday 23rd August 2016 Just as well we did leave Curtin Springs early, as there was a queue of vans in front of us at the entrance to the camping area at Ayers Rock Resort and more coming. Because all there large van sites were already occupied, they had to put us in the campervan area, which suited us as we were placed right at the rear with the bush behind us. We will be here for 4 nights as they had a special where we only pay for 3. This will give us plenty of time to explore and give us a rest from travel. Ayers Rock Resort is like an oasis in the desert with various accommodations to suit every taste and budget. It tries to fit with the environment and is hard to ... read more
