Europe » France » Brittany » Audierne April 20th 2014

Saturday, 19th April 2014 We made a relatively early start this morning, heading for the town of Audierne, just over 15kms north of us, for their Saturday morning market. The weather was fine and with little traffic on the road we made fairly good time, even though we made a few wrong turns. No matter, the GPS got us back on track in no time. Audierne is a fishing village set picturesquely on the side of a mountain overlooking the river inlet. Along the harbour stretches the town's main shopping area with its cafés, bars and restaurants, creperies, boutiques, estate agents and holiday agencies, the town hall, the tourism office, and the regional bus stop. In Rags' opinion markets are markets, with little to differentiate them. This one did have a few differences compared to others, ... read more

Plovan Tuesday 15th April 2014 This morning we woke quite early and Rags noticed that the kitchen windows were wide open. Imagine our shock when Elna, who had gone out to see Notre Dame in the evening, found the apartment full of gas when she returned at about midnight last night. We were all asleep and the stove had obviously not been turned off properly after cooking. She smelt it as soon as she walked in, turned it off and opened up the unit to air. Could have put an early end to our trip! Elna did comment wryly that if the worst had happened she at least would have had an extra couple of days in Paris. We lugged our gear to the nearest Metro station and made our way to the Budget car ... read more

9th April 2014 At last we are on our way after a lot of planning and discussion. On this trip we have been joined by Mark and Helena for the first 5 days in Paris, followed by 4 weeks based in Plovan in Brittany. From here we make our way to Prague, in the Czech Republic where we will meet up with two of the "BikeBoyz", Kevin and Jan, to ride bikes along the Greenways Trail to Vienna. We were welcomed at Perth Airport with the news that our plane was leaving 45 minutes later than advertised originally. When we finally left Perth we were now running about 90 minutes late but all passengers were reassured that no connections would be in danger. This was shown to be correct as when we checked at Kuala Lumpur ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » CBD September 15th 2013

10 days in Melbourne (2nd September - 12th September 2013) Jetstar did its normal trick in making things a little more difficult for us, this time cancelling our flight so that we had to leave 3 hours later. By the time arrived in Melbourne it was after 6pm and dark, but we had an easy trip into the city via our pre booked Skybus. China Town was close by so we had an enjoyable meal that included fried wantons. Day 1: Breakfast was at the Victoria Markets we enjoying a Turkish egg and bacon wrap, plus a mug of coffee. We then wandered around the markets and the meat displays tempted us to buy two thick fillets of steak as well as some nibbles. As we have an apartment we will be able to cook our ... read more

Sunday 21/7 We left home at about 0730. Refuelled at Paynes Find, swapped drivers to Rags. Still can't work out size of fuel tank, seems larger than 90 litre but the fuel consumption was not good due to towing a trailer and a fair speed! We had a lunch stop at Mt Magnet before continuing on to Kumarina, discussed on way and decided not to stay there - expensive and Trip Advisor said it was terrible. Stopped there for tea though and both had fish, chips and salad. Rags had his grilled and he had a huge, thick fillet of one of the best pieces of fish he has had for ages. Would go back for another. We continued in the dark for about another 50 kms and camped at a truck bay. Cal slept on ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri June 25th 2013

This trip had no particular timeline to it, we just wanted to get away for a week or two to relax. Kalbarri was chosen as the temperatures there had been a couple more than Perth, and it was somewhere we had never been to together. After an overnight stop at Dongara we reached Kalbarri about lunchtime and settled into the Murchison Caravan Park. The park itself was quite busy, many older couples and most of them with dogs. Most parks won't allow pets, the popularity of this park compared to others attesting to this need. Every day we were here we ensured we did something to keep up our exercise, either walking or riding our bikes. The bikes were used nearly every day to explore the town and nearby scenic spots, there being cycle paths alongside ... read more

Friday 20th July 2012 Our flight into Dubai went smoothly, a nice meal and a couple of drinks relaxed us and on arrival we went quickly through passport control and collected our bags. All was quiet as it was the first day of Ramadan. Entering the arrivals area there was no sign of our expected driver with a name card. We never organise transfers so it is just typical that the one time we have it hasn't worked! A search both inside and outside found noone from our hotel, so we were both now getting angry. At the Information Counter Rags asked if they would call the hotel and he then spoke to the Concierge. They told him the driver was there, and they would ring him. He appeared a few minutes later, reckoned the plane ... read more

Thursday 19th July 2012 The first thing we did this morning was to go looking for somewhere else to have our breakfast, the hotel's not being anything to write home about. After spending half an hour walking up and down the mall we came to the realisation that Bulgarians do not have breakfast, not even MacDonalds! Anyone sitting at a cafe was drinking one of those very small cups of coffee and smoking. Back at the hotel we did try again, at least we managed to get fairly hot cups of tea and coffee this time to wash down the dry bread. As usual we were early so we had a drink at a cafe to kill some time before boarding our bus that was to take us to Istanbul. The bus was packed, we appeared ... read more

Tuesday 17th July 2012 After a quick breakfast we made our way down to the bus station just down the road and caught the 0900 bus to Burgas. The bus was almost empty when we left but as we travelled along Sunny Beach we picked up many passengers including some young tourists from Britain. They had just spent a fortnight there, staying at one of the parent's holiday apartments. Just a quick flight for them, be like us going to Bali. About an hour later we stopped in Burgas and using our trusty iPad map we easily found the Fors Hotel, our home for the next couple of nights. Nice enough room, nothing flash but it was large and clean. Here we left our luggage and went off exploring. The hotel is near the city mall ... read more

Saturday 14th July 2012 Nice easy morning, breakfast (for what it was worth) across the road at the cafe then back to pack and do a few last minute things. Judy has assignments in for marking and is trying to mark at least 6/day. This isn't easy as they take a minimum of 30 minutes each and she has over 100 to do. We caught the local bus to the bus station next to the Grand Mall getting there with over an hour to spare before departure. We did wonder if we'd get away at all when we saw the bus come in, dirty, dented and not too smoothly. Obviously the inspectors were a little suspicious as two pulled up in a car next to it, checked the lights and indicators and spent some time with ... read more
