Nepal Thank god were here! Upon entering Nepal the mood visible lifted. Partly due to the horrendous bus journeys through India and partly due to India not being the best place we visited. I can’t quite put my finger on why but there is something about India that I really couldn’t quite take to, which was disappointing really. But Nepal…wow! Such a contrast in such a short space of time. The people here are friendlier, more accommodating and generally seemingly nicer people. And the scenery is breathtaking! Seriously, its strange how in such a short distance from the border the change in the atmosphere from India is remarkable. So, first stop is Chitwan National Park and the Hotel Park Side. We arrive late afternoon after a pleasant bus journey through the hills and mountains of Nepal ... read more

Asia » India » Punjab » Amritsar March 17th 2010

India We cross the border that we visited the night before to watch the Border Ceremony, though this time there is little dancing going on. Shame, I thought they did that just for us!!! haha. Amritsar First stop is Amritsar and Sundeep, our guide) tells us of The Golden Temple which we must surely visit. Again, we can also find beer to drink so for a while we are happy bunnies. And so off to the Golden Temple we go. You walk through the many small side streets I get my leg run over by a rickshaw driver, who seems mortified!! Mind you, it bloody well hurt too. Anyway, we stop at one small shop to sample some sweet, it was a very strange thing a bit like some hardened treacle and very very sweet. A ... read more

Asia » Pakistan » Karachi March 10th 2010

Pakistan An early leave is required and we were due to take the bus at 5am. At 4:56am I decide to Wake up and blind panic takes hold!! I rush to get my bits n bobs together and make it to the hotel lobby just in time (well, 5mins late to be precise). Good job I’d packed the night before!! Karachi We get through the airport without delay and fly onto Karachi. Apon arrival we are met by our guide Amjad, who greets us enthusiastically and welcomes us to his country. Despite the concerns from family and friends and from what we’ve read or heard in the media regarding terrorism and bombs etc etc Amjad immediately puts us at ease and tells us that the people of Pakistan are welcoming and very hospitable. Lets hope so, ... read more

Middle East » Iran March 4th 2010

Iran 4 mar 2010 After leaving Doggybiscuit we said goodbye to out Latvian driver, Martin then spent a further 2 hours at the border getting our visas checked and having finger prints taken, which for those of you that know me will realise that taking my prints will have a certain effect of officialdom. So, picture this if you will……an ink pad, a piece of paper with 10 boxes for each print. Yep, 10 boxes……which for me is 2 too many!! Next was something almost out of some carry on movie with much discussion, hilarité and smiley faces all round as I try to explain that yes, i am missing 2 fingers and yes I was born like it and no ive not been tortured in some gang ritual!! Ha ha… it was all quite innocent ... read more

Istanbul Istanbul. Well, what can I really say about this place that hasn’t already been said? On a personal note, I didn’t really like Istanbul though I can’t quite put a finger on why this is. Maybe it’s the constant harassment from all the shop keepers? At times they seemed somewhat threatening. That can get quite tiresome, even if you ignore them. Some get quite pushy too! Anyway, we were staying at the Orient Hostel. At first glance it seemed quite nice but the room, a 4 bed dorm, was too tiny for 4 people and the sockets just hanging from the wall made you somewhat wary. Especially when you have a large World plug adaptor hanging from it!! We did the usual touristy thing of visiting the impressive Blue mosque and other sites. Being an ... read more

Europe » Bulgaria » Plovdiv Province » Plovdiv February 23rd 2010

Sofia Sofia seemed ok and the hotel looked…..quite posh! Sadly, even posh hôtels have sh*t rooms and this place, the Park Hotel Moskva, was no exception. We even had yellow water to wash and shower in!!! Still, at least the views were good…ish up on the 15th floor. As we were only here for the one night a couple of us decided to venture into the city for a meal with Anne and her brother, Thomas, who kindly gave us a quick tour of the city by night before settling down for food and a nice cigar (my first ever!) The city looked amazing at night and after our rather delicious meal we header to some bar for a few drinks. My usual was the order of the day so i sank a couple of jacks. ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Budapest February 20th 2010

Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its extensive World Heritage Site includes the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, the second oldest in the world. It also has the second largest synagogue, and third largest Parliament building. Most of these are great photo opportunities, obviously. My first impression though wasn’t really a positive one. In fact, it’s now becoming pretty standard that I at first think that I’m not going to like a city, but leave thinking entirely the opposite. Anyways, Budapest is, like many of the other European cities I’ve recently visited, very beautiful…..in parts. We stayed in the Marco Polo Hostel just a short walk away from the city centre, which was a great idea. Again, like many of ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna February 18th 2010

Next stop Vienna. Now, Prague was stunning but so is Vienna. Turning every corner confronts you with more beautiful architecture. The city is clean, easy to navigate, decent easy to understand underground system, huge magnificent buildings….a very romantic city! Again, we seem to hit Vienna at just the right time. Few tourists and slightly warmer than Prague…..though the scarf is still required and I’ve decided to lay off the beer for a night or two….which lasts…….well, kind of…..well, not at all really. Ah well, I’m on holiday. I deserve it! I have also made a decision not to visit any titty-bars in Vienna either…..though there are still plenty of them (not that I’d noticed….ahem!) For me the afternoon was spent in the hostel (Wombats) catching up on emails, facebooking and looking at what to do in ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague February 16th 2010

Prague….the 1st place that I was looking forward to going to having heard sooo much about the place from various stag do’s and Arran waxing lyrical about certain bars and girls. I was also looking forward to sampling the beer, food & architecture of such a beautiful city. So, at this point I will warn those of you with a delicate constitution that the next part of this story is laced with smut, humour, smut, a touch of history, smut, a bit of fun, smut and facts. Oh, and did I mention smut??!! Seriously, mum……close your ears!! You have been warned..... On the outskirts of the city centre we book into the Plus Prague Hostel in the province of Praha 7. The hostel itself is great, warm, friendly and with internet access, pool, beer, washing facilities, ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Heidelberg February 15th 2010

Next stop is in the Rhine Valley and the small town of Heidelberg. Heidelberg is a city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The Rhein-Neckar-Kreis rural district surrounds the city. Heidelberg lies on the river Neckar at the point where it leaves its narrow, steep valley in the Odenwald to flow into the Rhine valley where it joins the river Rhine at Mannheim. Heidelberg is part of a densely populated region known as the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. It also has a Thorntons Chocolate style shop but for gummie bears!!! Yum….I like gunnie bears. There is also a monkey at the front of the bridge into the town. There ya go…a couple of random facts for you. Anyways, we stay at the Sudpfanne hostel which is nice and comfortable in a big old house, take lunch in a neaby barwhere ... read more
