Middle East » Jordan » South » Aqaba October 21st 2013

There was one nature treasure left that we had to visit before leaving Jordan; the coral riffs of the Red See. Aqaba is a perfect place to dive, snorkel or for a glass-boat excursion; the reefs are quite close by the beaches. Another plus punt is that Aqaba is still an overshadowed city, in comparing with Eilat in Israel or Sharm al Sheik in Egypt. However, I think it’s a great plus, Aqaba is not touristic, and it still kept his own signature. This makes Aqaba a perfect end of our trip. In the last past centuries, Aqaba had invested quite in its city; for example the many facility’s and the infrastructure. Aqaba was first a small, harbour village. It growth after a deal with Saudi Arabia, where Jordan, for exchange of desert, gained extra kilometres ... read more

This day would be the day that we meet two opposites; desert vs. sea. We leave the Wadi Rum and we’re heading to Aqaba, a small harbor city by the Red Sea. It was all possible; From camel riding to snorkeling, from hiking in the desert to find the best places in town. Where the Wadi Rum is quite silence, we were dropped in a living city. However, I agree that Aqaba is much easier going than the other city’s that we came across, like Madaba and the Capital city of Amman. But first, we were awaken by the sunlight after our second night in the Bedouin camp. After I wake up, I packed my bag. Hereafter, it was time for a short shower with the cold water from the water tank. In mean time the ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum October 19th 2013

Today, we had an entire day in the Wadi Rum desert. The Wadi Rum is almost a big playground; there are much rocks, and sand dunes which you can climb on. And that, covered in great scenery of orange-brown rocks, and red-orange sand. I never was in a desert before, and yesterday during the walk to our camp, I’ve had a preview. The sights that I had were beautiful, but today I really shall discover the desert and its beauty. But first, I had a cliffhanger yesterday. How was my first night in the desert, as wrote in the previous report? Well, here it goes… We discussed yesterday night who wanted to sleep outdoors, and who in the tent. We all got one mat, and you had to put your sleeping bag over it. There were ... read more

I never was into a desert before, so how would it be to stay in "the middle of nowhere", between sand (dunes), the silence, the heat and the wind? And how would it be to sleep under the stars? And how is it to live like a (Jordan) Bedouin? Today, it was the day that I visited the Wadi Rum Desert in Jordan and stay in a Bedouin camp. But first, we spend the morning in Wadi Musa. You could stay in the hotel, visit the town of Wadi Musa, or book one of the two optional excursions. During my booking, I've booked one excursion, the horse riding excursion in Wadi Musa. We should be picked up by taxis at 9 am. If you choice to do the other excursion, where you could visit "The High ... read more

Yesterday, I finally saw Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) with my own eyes. Today, I shall see the Treasury again, in the glory of the sunlight. But other tombs and places should be explored as well. It would be a hard day with much walking and climbing, and nothing is better to end such day with a good Turkish Hammam and massage! The day started early. Our tour leader wanted to leave early at 7 am, so we would be at the visit centre some 10 minutes later. If you arrive later, it will be busier. Around 9 or 10, busses from Aqaba or Amman with tourist are coming, so around that time it would be way crowded by the Treasury and the Siq. Around 7.30 you have a bigger change to be alone with the Treasury yourself. ... read more

Today, I finally came eye to eye with the Treasury in Petra, but first we visited preview: Little Petra. But the day started early: a hike in Dana Biosphere Reserve. But, we started the day with simple but delicious breakfast. The Dana hotel, is a simple hotel, but quit atmospheric and hospitable. I've really had the idea that I stayed in a small, local mountain town, middle in the biosphere. That's true; however, this town is supporting tourism. It breaths hospitable, and there are other tourists, staying in other hotels as well, in town. From the other hand it doesn't feel completely "live as the locals". The feeling of "living like the locals" can be better achieved in the Wadi Rum. But of course, the local experience is not why you visit Dana; the only reason ... read more

Today, it was the last breakfast in the Mariam Hotel in Madaba. We should go southwards to the Dana Biosphere Reserve, in the small town of Dana. The best road to discover Jordan is the "Kings Highway", and in between we should make an excursion to the Karak Castle. But first, time for breakfast in our rooftop restaurant. It was nice to see Madaba for the last time during breakfast. I really enjoyed this city. Afterwards, I was happy that the first days were in Madaba, it’s not as hectic and busy as in Amman. Also, it was not as touristic as Amman; it is really a nice good start for a trip to Jordan. Also, it’s perfect for visiting Mount Nebo and the Dead See, and it's not far way (maximum 1 hour of driving) ... read more

Today, we should visit Jerash in the morning. In the afternoon, there was more time for Madaba, because we didn't had that much time yesterday to see everything. But first, we had breakfast at our rooftop restaurant in our hotel (Mariam hotel, in Madaba). Again, the breakfast contained out a small English breakfast (eggs, vegetables, some small lamb sausages), flat bread with hummus, and small, sweet breads, coffee, tea and fresh juice. After breakfast, we left to Jerash, together with our guide Omar and of bus driver Waél. Jerash is one of the best kept Roman city's of the world, and the best kept Roman site of the Middle East. Only 5-10% was found, the other parts are still buried at the site or buried underneath the modern city of Jerash. In the Old Testament, Jerash ... read more

This day, was the first "real" day of my trip. After the first night, it was time to stand up, and time for breakfast. Our hotel, Mariam hotel, had a rooftop restaurant. There, you had a nice view over the city of Madaba, and it was the first acquaintance with Jordan by daylight. And then suddenly you realize that you are in Jordan and a total different culture, and of course The Middle-East. The town and the houses looks just like you see on TV and you already hear the hectic of the city life. I took breakfast, and I started to meet the other ones of the group, which arrived with another flight than mine. I saw them yesterday evening very fast, but I didn't really know them yet. The breakfast is totally different than ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » West » Madaba October 12th 2013

Today was the day: I finally go to Jordan! Before my trip, people asked me why I wanted to visit Jordan, a country in the Middle-East. People think that Jordan is also very restless due the Arabic restless, but that's not true. A time ago, I saw a TV travel program where the Dutch Erica Terpstra (old politician and old athlete) was visiting Jordan. She went to Amman and I really like the atmosphere, it looked like a "1000-and-one-night", fairytale. Then, she visted Petra. I was very wondering what was behind "the Siq", a narrow canyon with a big height. Then, you saw the Treasury of Petra. I never saw that in my life, and my mount fell open: This couldn't be true! Since that moment, I would like to visit Jordan and started to read ... read more
