Geo: 7.7455, 98.7754Today I went on a snorkeling trip over to the neighboring island of Ko Phi Phi Ley. In a so called long tail boat, the most common ship type around here. Among the different places we went were also Maya Bay and Phi Phi Ley Cove where parts of the movie "The Beach" were filmed. The snorkeling was alright but not great. Came back, ate some delicious coconut donuts (more like coconut pancakes), got a massage and met Lindsey and Adam for dinner, who went diving today.

Geo: 7.7455, 98.7754We took the ferry at 9AM to Ko Phi Phi. And what can I say, it's a picture-perfect island. Something Germans call Trauminsel or dream island. But then again for centuries the Andaman coast is known for its stunning beauty ;) Got there around noon and picked a place to stay. (Pak Klong Seaside Guesthouse) Unfortunately the monsoon season is still not quite over and it rained every now and then throughout the afternoon. Booked my snorkeling trip, checked out the town, got a massage and met my new friends Lyndsay and Adam for dinner/drinks.

Geo: 8.05, 98.91Got picked up in the morning by one of the common mini buses to take me over the border to Thailand. After arriving in Hat Yai I had to change buses to get further up north to Krabi. At first I was picked up by a tiny converted passenger-carrying pick up truck with 4 other travelers (Lindsey & Adam and 2 others) plus backpacks already inside. None of us knew if we would spend the next 5 hours holding on to some flimsy rails cramped on some tiny benches :) (The driver spoke no English) But after a 15min drive we were told to unload. Another mini bus would do the rest of the trip. Although it was a better transportation option the mini bus was hopelessly overloaded with virtually no space left, with ... read more

Geo: 5.36365, 100.311In between the vertical floods of the Monsoon rains I walked through Chinatown, the Colonial District from the time of the British occupation including Fort Cornwallis, Little India and the Arabic Bazaar. George Town • Penang is a very multicultural city since the time of its founding 200 years ago. The interesting collection of historical buildings reflects the island's various ethnicities: Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Malays, Siamese, Burmese and Europeans. Die unterschiedlichen historischen Gebaeu... read more

Geo: 5.36365, 100.311Took the train to Butterworth this morning. Along endless jungle and mountain ranges. And saw a lot of monumental infrastructure projects like new freeways, factories, bridges and railway tracks being built. As well as virtually every train station along the way is getting a 21st century makeover. I wouldn't be surprised if Malaysia soon becomes a member of the 'Asian Tigers'.From Butterworth I took the ferry over to Georgetown on Pulau Penang Island. Checked into a guesthouse, got some food at the hawker centre down by the harbor and strolled through Little India, which happened to have some kind of celebration with mini parade tonight. Ausserdem wir ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684Since I went up the Petronas Towers 8 years ago I decided to check out the view on top of Menara Kuala Lumpur, the city's TV tower (1,403ft). Despite the occasional Monsoon showers I managed to walk through bustling Chinatown and the "World of Smells" in Little India. And out of every Asian music store I still keep hearing "Gangnam Style" by South Korean rapper PSY... ;) ... read more

Geo: 11.5588, 104.917I actually planned to see the Royal Palace, the National Museum and the famous Silver Pagoda today. But as it happened the former King of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk died of a heart attack today during a medical treatment in Beijing, China. And therefore all official buildings were immediately closed for visitors. So I strolled along the Mekong river and escaped the heat having lunch and a few beers at the Foreign Correspondents Club overseeing the promenade. Later I checked out a couple of bars but due to the ongoing Buddhist holidays the city and its venues look more like a ghost town because everyone flocks to the countryside for the festivities.

Geo: 11.5588, 104.917Went to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum today. The former high school was turned into the notorious Security Prison S-21, a site of unimaginable cruel tortures during the 4-year reign of the Communist Red Khmer between 1975 and 1979. Even though that happened more than 30 years ago it is heartbreaking to walk through these rooms knowing what happened to innocent people there. It's a chilling reminder of how important it is to stay vigilant towards Communism and fight this inhuman ideology wherever it resurfaces. And when i talked to Cambodians about this issue it shows that even today the country is still trying to cope with the aftermath of these traumatic years. And as in Europe the guilty leaders never had to face justice...On a lighter note the space shuttle "Endeavour" made its ... read more

Geo: 11.5588, 104.917Unfortunately it's time to leave the ruins of Angkor behind. Took the bus at 8:30 back to Phnom Penh. The joy of taking a bus rather than a one hour flight back to the capitol lies in the fascinating observations of daily life you can make along the way. Much of life in Cambodia happens outside. So traveling on a bus is like an endless string of snapshots about the daily life of its people. You see people getting a haircut, children playing, women carrying all kinds of bulky things on their heads, water buffaloes crossing the busy highway, a family of 5 on a motorbike without helmets, men hopelessly overloading their trucks, people attending their rice fields, mothers nursing their babies while sitting on the back of a driving motorbike, fishermen throwing out ... read more
