Geo: 27.4426, 89.6673Got picked up by my Bhutanese entourage :) driver Rinzy, my guide Kesang and her colleague Pema, who joined us on this public holiday. Since archery is the national sport here we started the morning watching the men demonstrating their incredible skills in a competition at the archery ground. After that we drove up the mountains to a viewpoint overlooking the busy Bhutanese capitol Timphu. Not far from there is the Motithang Takin Preserve, housing Bhutan's oddball mammal and national animal - the Takin. Next stop was the gigantic new Buddha statue across town on top of another mountain. The site is still under construction but the workers there granted us access anyway. It will be the 17th biggest Buddha statue in the world and the hollow body will be filled with another 170.000 ... read more

Geo: 27.4426, 89.6673Took a flight with the Royal Bhutanese Airline DrukAir out of rainy Bangkok to a unsuspected stop at a dusty Indian military airstrip in Bagdogra. After taking on 50 more western tourists we headed for Paro, Bhutan. Landing there is rather adventurous. The plane has to fly an S-curve through the valleys while descending before quickly leveling for landing. Immediately upon arrival one realizes how remote this Himalayan kingdom is, with only two immigration officers needed.Got picked up by my guide and driver for the next 8 days and had lunch in Paro before we drove under blue skies to the capitol Timphu. Strolled around a bit and checked into the Riverview Hotel. I still can't believe I actually made it here to Bhutan, which by the way is also called the Land of ... read more

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Last day in Thailand. Sent some stuff home, let someone cut my Hippie-hair and met my friend Natti, who I knew from Ko Phi Phi and happened to be in town too. She showed me the amazing Grand Palace and the temple of Wat Pra Kaew with its famous Emerald Buddha. Had dinner in a quiet alleyway away from the bustling Khao San Road.Letzter Tag in Bangkok.

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521Took the morning bus heading for Bangkok. Once again I'm the only westerner aboard on this 10-hour rather uneventful journey. Except maybe for this little story...During my bus ride they were playing several movies and music shows. In the last two hours they were broadcasting what appeared to be some kind of variety show in front of a teenage audience. With funny games and dance performances which looked like a mix of MJ's "Thriller" and Freddy Kruger. One segment of the show was a WWII comedy act with an extensive set "Saving Private Ryan"-Style in which the Thai actors were mocking Allies and Nazi's alike. Including a sexy "Indiana Jones"-style Thai Nazi girl, 'friendly firing' American GI's and a Hitler performer with swastika smileys on his uniform and neon colored plastic weapons in the ... read more

Geo: 18.8, 98.98In the late morning I went to the local Women Correctional Institution where they have a vocational training center for female inmates. Most of them got time for drug offenses. And here they get job training to become therapists for traditional Thai massages. So I got one and I must say it was amazing. The whole environment didn't really feel like a prison either. It was a great and unique experience. In the afternoon I grabbed a Tuk-Tuk and drove north to the "Tiger Kingdom", a privately funded facility dedicated to breed and nurse the threatened Tiger species of Thailand. To be able to pay for their daily meat they offer people the experience to go into the cages and touch them. Pretty amazing to be in there :)After my return I strolled through ... read more

Geo: 18.8, 98.98Today was TempleDay ;) Chiang Mai used to be the Capitol of the ancient Kingdom of Lanna Thai. So, naturally it is a feast for culture vultures ;)First i ventured through monk filled alleyways to the picturesque Wat Duang Di, followed by the age-old Wat Lok Molee and the cool kid among the temples: Wat Phra Singh, then to the ruins of Wat Chedi Luang and the teak-crafted Wat Phan Tao. After so much holiness I was ready for some down to earth secular fun at the massage parlors and bars along Loi Kroh Road...

Geo: 18.8, 98.98Took a late morning flight with Air Asia ($130) from Phuket to Chiang Mai, up in the northwestern part of Thailand. Originally I planned to take the train via Bangkok. But flying the distance saved me almost 2 days. Found a decent guesthouse in Old Town named "Safe House Court" and hoped it kept its promise during my stay ;)In the afternoon i checked out the nearby temple, wrote some postcards and updated my travel blog. The north is also a welcome escape from the southern humidity. Had dinner at the Chiang Mai Writers Club, what seemed like the popular hangout for aging western castaways and new expats. Geo: 7.89072, 98.3988Carolina, her Mom Marie Anne and I met in the morning to share a ride back to Phuket Town for some sightseeing. We strolled through Old Town with its many historic buildings and arrays of shops, nice little cafes and antique stores. It was a lot more picturesque than we thought. And we had a lot of fun. Came back to Kata in the late afternoon to watch the sunset and had dinner by the beach before we said goodbye. Geo: 7.8242, 98.2977Since i got to bed late last night I skipped the morning ferry to Phuket and took the one in the afternoon instead. I actually planned to stay in Phuket Town. But then I met two lovely travelers, Carolina and her Mom Marie Anne from Chile. They are on a trip through Asia too and we chatted until we reached the port. Since the two booked a hotel in Kata Beach, which also sounded better, I decided to join them. Upon arrival i found a nice inexpensive guesthouse close by, the Kata Orient House right across the street from where I had my best Thai massage yet :)Da ich gestern Abend erst spaet zurrueck im Guesthouse war, schlief ich aus und nahm anstatt der Morgen-Faehre die am Nachmittag.Eigentlich plante ich in Phuket Town zu ... read more

Geo: 7.7455, 98.7754Lindsey, Adam and I met for breakfast and we decided to hike up to the Ko Phi Phi viewpoint. Which was totally worth the blood, sweat and tears to get up there in this tropical heat ;)From there we went back to the other side of the island where we rented some kayaks and paddled around the cliff to a snorkeling point. There we saw a morel eel. After our return I got a massage and we met for our last dinner together. Afterwards we went to Woody's for drinks at the party beach.
