Once we had decided to leave Queenstown we headed for a town called Oamaru on the Otago Peninsula, as we would get there around 7pm and we had heard there is a huge ‘little blue’ penguin colony there that comes out of the sea to go ‘home’ after dusk, so we would arrive in time to see them. We got our tickets at the visitor centre then headed to the grandstand outside which overlooked the ocean where the penguins would come out from. We had to be quiet when the came out of the sea so as not to disturb them or they wouldn’t go to their nests, which were really near us. They would then head up a ramp to their nests to feed their waiting chicks. The visitors centre monitors the penguin numbers and ... read more

After driving back to Queenstown from Milford Sound we arrived to glorious sunshine and around 23 degrees so headed down to the ‘beach’ in the town centre, which is a shingle shore surrounding the lake, to make the most of the hot weather. After a couple of hours relaxing in the sun it was time to pick up our skydive photos (which were in an album) and dvd! We went to the NZONE shop to get them and watch the dvd to make sure it worked, and watching it and looking through the photos bought back the memories of doing the jump and reminded us how good it was. We were hungry by then so went to the famous Fergburger diner, a burger place that specialises in huge burgers of all kinds- normal beef, chicken, pork, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Milford Sound October 25th 2010

On the drive to Milford Sound for our overnight boat cruise, we were both thinking and talking about the skydives we had done that morning in Queenstown and how we were both so happy we had done them, as well as taking in the great scenery around us. About 2 hours after leaving QT we stopped in a town called Te Anau (which is halfway between there and Milford Sound) for some lunch and to see the main attraction of this town - the huge blue lake. Now I know we have seen a lot of lakes here and you may think we are getting bored of them, but these lakes are incredible - huge and so blue, most of the time with a shingle shore line so they look like a beach and they are ... read more

We arrived in QT in the early afternoon and our first stop (as always) was the i-site for some info about the town. Although QT is probably one of the best known towns in NZ and has loads to do, it isn’t very big at all with a population of only 8500 people, although this gets above 50,000 in high summer and also in winter for the snow season. The scenery here is amazing, probably the most picturesque town we have been to so far, with its massive blue lake, snowy mountains blue skies, and as we couldn’t do a skydive in Taupo we had said QT is the next place we would like to try and do one as the views would be incredible. So we enquired about this at the i-site and got the ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Wanaka October 24th 2010

The drive down from Franz Josef was easily our most spectacular yet, with a back drop of snow capped mountains, lush forest winding forests and mirror blue lakes. After driving for around 4 hours we reached a town about 50 minutes from Queenstown called Wanaka. We had origninally planned to just pass through this town to view the large lake, but on arrival I think we both immediately realised that we had to spend the night there as it looked so nice and it was now approaching 7.30 and after our glacier climbed we were both quite tired. We pulled up in a small car park opposite the huge lake and next to a field which had been holding the annual labour weekend fair and planned to have a quick bite to eat and get an ... read more

After leaving the beautiful Abel Tasman, a little sad we couldn’t stay a few days longer, the first of the places we stopped at was a small town called Murchison about 2 hours from Motueka, and we hadn’t originally planned to stop here but it was lunch time and we were hungry, plus it would have taken another 2 hours at least to get to the town of Westport where we originally wanted to stop for lunch and by then it would have been quite late in the afternoon. So we stopped in Murchison, which was a nice enough town but didn’t have too much to see, and at a small place had freshly caught fish and chips outside in the sun, before moving on towards Westport. When we got near to Westport, Vic read in ... read more

We woke up and after a fairly cold night’s sleep, were greeted with clear blue skies and the forecast for the day ahead seemed good. After making breakfast (Scott’s just discovered that Vics does a mean scrambled eggs, so that will become a weekend staple when we get home). After breakfast and catching up with online bits again it was around 11am and although the reception staff at the hostel said we had missed the morning boats that take you around the various islands and beaches in Abel Tasman, we still decided to drive there and see what it was like as it was only about 10 minutes from the hostel. The main attractions in AT are its pristine white sand beaches and hidden coves, aswell as the huge national park, which are only accessible by ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Marlborough » Blenheim October 21st 2010

As soon as we arrived in Picton, we went to the information centre/i-site (every town has one of these and they give you all sorts of info about where you are going and suggestions of what to see) where a really nice woman helped us with our south island itinerary for the next 10 days, as we had been struggling to decide how to do this island, she then said that as we were near a lot of wineries and vineyards, why didn’t we do some wine tasting? Good idea! We got a map of the vineyards, which were based in the Marlborough region of Blenheim about 30 minutes from Picton, and set off to start our first ever wine tasting afternoon. We first stopped at a winery called Saint Claire (all the wineries have ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington October 20th 2010

As we approached the last hour of our drive to Wellington, the wind picked up considerably and every time we passed a large truck in the opposite direction, the campervan was blown all over the road and at times it was difficult to steer. However, as has been the theme so far in NZ, the scenery was spectacular and we passed along the banks of several huge lakes before hugging the coastline all the way to a town about 15 minutes outside Wellington called Porirua. This had a lovely little harbour and as we had spotted a huge supermarket on the drive into it, we decided to stock up on supply’s and stay at a little campsite called ‘Elson Camp’ for the night. We had decided to cook steak for dinner and after unloading the van ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua October 18th 2010

The drive to Rotorua from Waitomo was about 2 hours and passed through lots of green countryside (and many many sheep) as we were cutting across the country. We arrived in Rotorua around 5pm and straight away could smell something which can only be described as rotten eggs (and the windows were closed). We had heard this town smelt so bad because of the nearby geysers and the sulphur that came from them but we thought it couldn’t be as bad as everyone made out- it was worse than we could have imagined. On stepping out of the car in the small town centre Vic was trying not to breathe it in while Scott was actually heaving from it- it was the worst smell we have ever smelt and there was no getting away from it ... read more
