Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta May 7th 2011

After an amazing few days on the Gili islands we boarded a boat back to Padangbai where we would then get a minibus back to Kuta for the last couple of days of this holiday. The boat took about 2 1/2 hours and the seas were quite rough so even though we were inside, we and our bags got soaked! When we got back to Kuta we were dropped near the main street so walked back to where we had stayed for the first few days and got a standard room there for about £30 a night for 2 nights. It was late afternoon when we got back so we went for a walk in search of a bite to eat, and ran into the taxi driver who had taken us to Ubud a few days ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gilli Trawangan May 1st 2011

We left Ubud after a great few days for the Gili islands, 3 small islands which were supposed to have amazing beaches. We were picked up early and driven to the port in the town of Padangbai about an hour away, where you get the boats to the Gili's from. This town is pretty small and people mainly only go through it to get the boats to/from the Gili's. After a bit of messing about (swapping tickets over, being herded from bus to boat etc), we hopped on the 'fast' boat which was due to take 2 hours to get to Gili Trawangan, the biggest of the 3 islands. Gili Meno and Gili Air are the other 2, one is inhabitable and the other is very quiet. After about 3 hours (common theme in Asia- buses/boats ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Ubud April 28th 2011

(The title of this blog is actually the title of a book and film, most of which was based in Ubud (the love part), and after spending a few days in this amazing town we can vouch for that!) After a crazy but fun few days in Kuta, we wanted to get away and see some of the 'real' Bali, so set off in a taxi to Ubud, which was only an hour away. We were going to get a public bus/minibus to save money, but a private taxi worked out at almost the same so we got that insted. We arrived in Ubud around 5pm and got dropped off near the main street to go and find some accomodation for the next few nights. Ubud is tiny and only has 2/3main streets which surround a ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta April 24th 2011

After just a few months back in London we were sick of the cold weather and daily grind, so booked oursleves a trip to Bali - backpacker style! We got the backpacks out and planned a rough 2 week itinerary around Bali and the Gili Islands. First stop - Kuta... After a really long (but good) 16 hour flight with Singapore Air to Bali via Singapore, we arrived at Kuta airport around 11pm and immediately noticed how crazy it was - welcome back to Asia, how we'd missed you! We got a taxi to a small hotel that we had pre-booked online, but soon hit traffic on a one way street - it was a Friday night and so Kuta was heaving with so many people and cars that our taxi driver said we'd be better ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don January 12th 2011

As we were leaving Krabi for Phi Phi, we bumped into an Irish guy called Dan who we had met months ago in Rio, Brazil - such a small world! On the boat over we all had a good catch up and when we arrived on Phi Phi island 2 hours later we stayed toegther and started to walk through the small town to find some accomodation for a couple of nights. As we were walking through the town we saw our friends from Australia who we had met over New Year so agreed to meet up with them later that night. After checking out a few places 2 things became apparent quickly; the island was very busy so most places were full, and the price of accomodation here was very high compared to the standard ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ao Nang January 7th 2011

We finally arrived in Krabi 4 hours late, after having to swap buses twice and wait around for ages, and when we did arrive we were dropped at a tourist trap of a 'bus station' which was just a hut in the middle of no where with the only overpriced transport around. We were tired by this point though so got a shared taxi to Ao Nang, the area we had stayed before in Krabi, and found a great room at a guesthouse next door to where we stayed last time we were here in November. As it was getting late we just went for some dinner and got an early night, but were up early the next morning as the weather was great. Before we went to the beach we stopped at a massage place ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui January 6th 2011

After a great New Year and a few days of sun we left Koh Phangan by ferry to go to the nearby island of Koh Samui. We arrived after 30 minutes and jumped in a mini van heading towards Chaweng Beach, the main area and beach on the island, and as we had nowhere booked the driver dropped us off at a resort called Long Beach which he thought may have rooms. The resort itself was on the beach and right in the middle of Chaweng which was great, but the rooms weren’t great and they were more than what we had been paying, so we left our bags there and went to look for somewhere else. After going into at least 5 other places along the beach and finding out that rooms were at least ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan January 4th 2011

We arrived at the ferry port on the 30th after our luxurious overnight bus journey from Bangkok and waited an hour for the ferry that would take us to Koh Phangan, which took a further 2 ½ hours before we arrived, but we then had to get a taxi for another 40 minutes as we were staying at the northern end of the island which didn’t have fully paved roads. To say the roads were bumpy is an understatement – although it was only 18km from the port the journey took so long because over half of the ‘roads’ are nothing more than mud tracks! We made it though and checked into a lovely hotel - kindly booked by Scott's mum & dad for xmas (Thanks guys!), right on the beach, where we would be for ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok December 29th 2010

After a short 45 minute flight from Cambodia we arrived back in Bangkok, where we got a taxi to the hotel we had stayed at before and promptly settled ourselves by the swimming pool, as the city was just as hot as ever. We had a lazy day around the pool and in the evening we went for dinner at a cool bar/restaurant where we both had the hottest Thai food in a while – maybe it was just extra hot, or maybe as we hadn’t had spicy food in a couple of weeks we weren’t as used to it, but either way it was still good, although we would be paying for it the next day! A few cocktails later and we ended up in a club nearby which was good and busy – the ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap December 27th 2010

We arrived in Siem Reap early on Christmas Eve and got a tuk tuk to our hotel, which we were really looking forward to as we treated ourselves for xmas and books a really nice hotel. When we got there it was just gorgeous and the service was great- it’s so nice to have a bit of luxury every now and again! We had arranged with our tuk tuk driver to go to Angkor Wat that evening, the oldest temple in history, to see the sunset so had the whole day to ourselves, and as it was early we went into the town to try and book somewhere for Christmas dinner the next day as we both wanted a traditional roast. We found an Irish pub called Molly Malones which was doing a roast so we ... read more
