Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville December 23rd 2010

After a 4 hour bus ride from chaotic Phnom Penh we arrived to sunshine in the beach town of Sihanoukville, which we had heard was the premier beach destination in Cambodia. We had booked a hotel through the place we stayed in PP so didn’t know what to expect, so when we were picked up at the bus station and taken to an amazing beach front hotel we were nicely surprised! After checking in and being shown to our room (which had cable tv, wi fi, big bed, views to the beach and nice bathroom, for less than £15!) we changed and wondered down to the beach for something to eat. We had heard so many mixed reviews about S’Ville so were pleasantly surprised to find a gorgeous beach lined with beach bars and small local ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh December 21st 2010

We landed in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, after a short flight from Vientiane in Laos, and after paying $20 for our visas we picked up our luggage and got a tuk tuk outside the airport, towards the riverside area where we wanted to stay. As soon as we were out of the airport and on the main roads we saw the craziest traffic and most chaotic driving we had seen so far on our whole trip - Bangkok looked positively safe and calm compared to this! In Cambodia you drive on the right hand side, but there were cars and bikes coming towards us on our side of the road - they just drive whichever way they want and you need to dodge them - we even saw a small accident and were not ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane December 19th 2010

We arrived in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, after a 5 hour journey in a mini van but it wasn't as bad as it sounds as it was quite a new one so was fairly comfy. After finding a nice hotel for our one nights' stay and having some lunch we went out in the sunshine to explore the small town, and after seeing some temples, a famous statue and the Mekong river joining on the other side with Thailand, we had pretty much seen everything on offer...everyone says this is the most boring capital city in the world, as there isn't much to see or do, and they are not wrong, although it is a nice place. After showering and having a rest at our hotel we went out to find somewhere for dinner, and ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng December 18th 2010

We left Luang Prabang, shortly after finishing giving alms to the monks, to go the bus terminal via a tuk-tuk arranged from the hotel. The scienic bus journey took around 5 hours passing through small villages and up the winding moutains, with great views all the way - When we arrived we quickly located a few guesthouses looking over the Vang Vieng river (the area we wanted to stay in) and quickly decided on a spacious room on the top floor of a guesthouse with views looking out to the mountains and river, with a huge balcony. After watching the sunset, we decided to head out to the town to see what was on offer in terms of food and nightlife. The town, which is less than 15 yrs old and was only formed as a ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang December 15th 2010

We flew the short distance from Chiang Mai (which we were sad to leave as we'd loved it) to Luang Prabang, our first stop in Laos, the smallest country in SE Asia. We landed and caught a tuk tuk to the centre of town with a guy from America who we had met at the airport to find a place to stay for a couple of nights. We were dropped off but saw nothing we liked the look off and were deciding where to go when a guy on a bicycle pulled up to us and said he knew a nice guesthouse a few streets away, so we went with him and the place was nice and just £8 a night for a big room with tv and balcony! The three of us had a drink ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai December 13th 2010

We got back to Bangkok early after our restful journey on the government bus - this is definately the way to go from now on - and headed towards the hotel that we had stayed at when we were there before, so that we could spend the day by the pool as it was so hot, before catching our overnight train that night to Chaing Mai in the north. We had some dinner and then made our way to the train station on the other side of town for our 10pm train, something we had been looking forward to as it would mean we had tried almost every mode of transport in Thailand - bus, moped, tuk tuk, ferry, car and now train. We boarded and were pleased to see the beds were already set up ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan December 8th 2010

We left Bangkok on our overnight bus from just off the Koh San Road (Despite reading and hearing reviews after we booked that the drivers go through you're luggage and take any valuables left in the case) and began our supposedley 12 hour journey south to the pier of Surat Thani before boarding a ferry to the island of Koh Phangan - which is known for its Famous 'moon' parties. Now, we had only decided to go too koh phangan at the last minute as Vic's good friend Jo and her boyfriend were planning to be there for a few days and there was a black moon party being held on the Friday - plus as we had decided to take a few extra flights later on in our trip we had some spare time. Anyway ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok December 5th 2010

We arrived in Bangkok at 6am after our overnight bus from Krabi, which went smoothly, and as we didn't have any accomodation booked we headed to the main backpacker district of Koh San Road. This road is lined with shops, bars and restaurants as well as street stalls and markets, and at 6am was still going from the night before. Tired, hungry and in need of a shower this wasn't what we needed, so after a fruitless search of the nearby roads to find some decent accomodation (this involved Scott running around trying to look for a nice place to stay at a nice price, not easy in one of the worlds biggest and busiest capital cities), plus by 8am it was already about 25 degrees. Luckily we soon found a nice little hotel with a ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Krabi December 1st 2010

We were up early and quickly transfered to the pier at Phuket for our 3 hour ferry accross to the mainland area of Ao-Nang in Krabi. The weather this morning was horrific and as sad as we were to be leaving Phuket and the nearby islands, we were glad we had chosen a morning where the weather wasn't great and we wouldn't be missing out on the sun. We slept for most of the journey to Krabi which took about 3 hours and when we arrived it was still raining, so without a place to stay we jumped in a taxi van to the town centre to find a guesthouse for a few nights. We were dropped off by a row of about 5 guesthouses and within 10 minutes we had found a really nice place ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket November 27th 2010

We arrived into Phuket international at 7.00pm after leaving behind a torrential down pour in Singapore where for a short while we didn't think our flight would take off at all. Anyway, we managed to negotiate our way out of the airport dodging the onslaught of various tour operators and taxi companies. We located the taxi rank and were soon on our way to Patong which would be our first point of call on our tour of Thailand. Patong is an area of Phuket which is probably the most tourity part, full of shops (where you can haggle endlessly for bargains), tasty restuarants, bars, clubs and more...we knew this before we arrived and were actually really loking forward to it. We had booked a hotel online before we arrived and got a great deal, but when ... read more
