Asia » Singapore November 24th 2010

We awoke, bright and early in Cairns for our first flight of the day - a short 3 hours flight to Darwin, the flight took off on top without hitch and we soon landed in Darwin internation where we had a 4.5 hour lay over until our on would flight to Singapore. Originally we had planned to leave the airport and visit the town of Darwin, however when we arrived we were informed that as we had effectively left Oz we were stuck in no man's land and would have to wait in the connection lounge (which only had one small coffee shop in) and we would have to wait until we arrived in Singapore at around 9 o'clock for our first meal of the day - Que a hissy fit from Scott who was abslutely ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns November 23rd 2010

We arrived in Cairns early on Sunday morning to heavy rain - welcome to the tropics! But it didn't matter to Vic; she was excited as she was about to see her friend Jo who has been in Aus for the last 6 months. Jo came to pick us up shortly after we arrived at the bus stop and we went to the hostel with her where she had been living and working (with her boyfriend Tyson), which was really nice and our cheapest accomodation in Aus so far this trip. We all chatted for a good while, swapped stories and had a good catch up by the pool until we could check in to our room, where we had a power nap before the four of us went out to have a look at the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays November 20th 2010

When we first arrived in Aus on November 1st one of the things we wanted to do most was sail round the Whitsunday Islands, so we booked an overnight trip which finally came around just before Vics birthday! We stayed the night before the trip in a beach town called Airlie Beach (arriving on an overnight bus from Rainbow beach) which had a great holiday feel to it and a gorgeous swimming lagoon on the edge of the sea. We checked into our hostel, looked round the small town and did a bit of shopping as it was raining (Scott bought Vic some bits for her birthday, and it was still warm but its rainy season at the moment) before going back to the hostel to get ready for a night out. Our hostel was one ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island November 16th 2010

We arrived in tiny Rainbow beach (the gateway to Fraser Island) from Noosa, checked into our hostel (which was really nice) and got ready to go through our briefing for our 3 day 2 night self drive trip to Fraser Island. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and you get around in huge 4x4 trucks in groups of 8 people (which everyone takes turns in driving), following a guide in the lead truck, checking out different spots on the island, then camping and cooking at night. We had our briefing which went through all the health and safety aspects of driving on sand, what to do and what not to do then we were put into our groups. With us was a really nicve couple from Essex (Laura & Gavin), 2 really ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Noosa Heads November 13th 2010

After a short bus ride from Brisbane we arrived in the small town of Noosa in the early evening. We checked into our hostel, which was in a huge old colonial house, and arranged our tickets for Australia Zoo for the next day. Noosa is a really nice beach town with a holiday feel, and as we hadn't been out for a proper meal for ages we decided to treat ourselves and went to a small restaurant for steak and chicken parmigana, which were both so good, before going back for an early night as the last few days had been pretty full on and we wanted to be up early for the zoo. We got the bus to the famous Australia Zoo, home of the late Steve Iriwn the 'crocodile hunter' and forst went to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Brisbane November 12th 2010

After an amazing few days in Byron Bay it was time to move on up the coast, so we decided to go to a large town on the Gold Coast called Surfers Paradise about an hour away, predominantly so we could check out one of its famous water parks. We had booked on a bus at 6.30pm and it was on time and empty which was a good sign, so we jumped on and sadly said goodbye to Byron, one of our favourite places so far. After a few minutes we realised the driver was not the full ticket but as we were the only ones on a 66 seater bus we thought he may just be bored and wanted to talk to us, so we made small talk for a while until he announced he ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay November 9th 2010

We arrived in Byron Bay early from our overnight bus from Sydney and was greeted at the bus terminal by a small shuttle from our hostel and had a little tour of the town (all two streets of it) en-route to our hostel (YHA). We managed to check-in almost straight away and chilled in the hammocks for a few hours as it was still early and very cloudy. However, by 11am the sun had come out and the clouds had cleared so we grabbed a couple of body boards and made our way to the beach. The beach itself was gorgeous and the waves were so huge, we chilled out and mucked about in the waves before heading for some incredible chicken wraps and then repeated the morning activities of chilling, sunbathing and jumping in the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney November 6th 2010

Firstly this blog is a little late and we are behind with our blogs in Aus as the internet is so bad! But they will be going up over the next few days hopefully...this is from our time in Sydney from the 4th-6th Nov... We had a short flight from Melbourne and arrived in Sydney on a grey rainy morning, but the sights of the famous Opera House and Harbour Bridge in the distance soon lifted our spirits. We were staying in the Harbour Rocks area which overlooks the opera house and the bridge and is surrounding by lots of markets, shops, bars and cafes on little cobbled streets- much nicer than central Sydney which is a bit like Soho, with neon lights and cheap bars. Our hostel was brand new so everything was immaculate ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne November 3rd 2010

After a short early morning flight from Christchurch we arrived in Melbourne, our first destination in Australia, but not before a small drama - while we were waiting for our flight Scott decided to quickly look in duty free, and when he came back it was time to board the plane but he had somehow lost his boarding pass! Cue him running back to duty free while Vic was having a mini stress at the gate, he then came back but didn't have his boarding pass, but luckily they printed a new one at the gate so we were allowed on the plane- Scott is still adamant he put it back in the bag after duty free but it is clearly lost! We got the airport shuttle to our hostel in Melbourne which was very central ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch October 31st 2010

On Friday morning we were up early in anticipation of our whale watching trip in Kaikora. Unfortunately the weather was pretty bad with rain and wind, and when we called to confirm that the trip was going ahead we were told it wasn’t due to the weather conditions. We had the option of rebooking for the following morning but as we had to get to Christchurch to get the camper back we wouldn’t have had the time so we made a decision to leave it. Much as we were looking forward to the trip and the possibility of seeing whales in the wild, we were really tired after a mad few days and didn’t mind too much about giving it a miss, plus we had already seen dolphins in the bay of islands as well as ... read more
