Date Monday 13th September 2010 City Pisa, Italy Climate low 15c - high 17c - raining then fine Up bright and early this morning to ensure we got to the airport in plenty of time to check-in with Ryanair. We had heard plenty of horror stories and every time we mentioned that we were travelling on Ryanair we were greeted with raised eyebrows and an “Oh, good luck” comment! So we were determined to ensure we were not going to be one of those horror stories. We had to purchase another bag allowance as Ryanair only allow a 15kg limit per bag and we had ‘a little bit more’ than that, with our 2 bags sitting at around 45kgs. We were carrying an extra bag just for this purpose so had rearranged the luggage the night ... read more

Date Wednesday 8th September 2010 City Edinburgh to Aviemore, Scotland Climate low 12c - high 16c - fine all day Today was the start of the road trip, herein referred to as the ‘roadie’. Shaun and Richard walked down to the Waverley train station to pick up the car and then took half an hour to navigate the one-way system the 1km back to the Caledonian hostel to pick up Jen. Arriving back to collect Jennie and the bags was made a lot simpler as we were communicating via the walkie talkie. All loaded up and just after 9.30am we headed North-East for St Andrews and Crail. We wanted to go via Kirkcaldy where Jennie’s relatives on her Mum’s side came from - the “Heggies”. Richard thinks that while we are in Scotland - our “family” ... read more

Date Monday 6th September 2010 City London to Edinburgh Currency GBP Climate low 8c - high 15c - fine Our stay at the Montana Excel Bed and Breakfast in Argyle Square went well. We had a double room with shower but no toilet - this was down the small hallway and was no issue at all - just sharing with a handful of other rooms. The shower was tiny but had good water pressure. The bed was only a double with one pillow each but the linen was comfortable and clean - so suited us just fine. The breakfast (included) was hearty comprising hard poached eggs, toast, sausages, bacon and baked beans. They also served us tea and there was juice and cereal available as well. We were on the 2nd floor and so getting the ... read more

It took us 1½ hours to travel 10 kms to the Airport Express train station in Beijing during rush hour in the morning. Shaun was beginning to get fidgety and we were considering ditching the cab to catch the underground to the express train when we finally got out of first gear and made a break in the traffic. We had allowed a buffer of an hour and we used it all, arriving at the gate only ½ an hour before boarding at 11am. Great flight over the ... read more

Date Thursday 2nd September 2010 City Beijing Climate low 21c - high 32c An action packed day today, with a visit to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, a visit to the Summer Palace and a close up look at the Olympic buildings. We had decided to organise a private car for the day as there was no other way to fit it all in. Our driver, John Guo, was put on to us by a friend working at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing who has used him as well. He charges 600 Yuan for a full day. We drove through some awesome countryside and it was evident that a lot of money had been spent preparing for the 2008 Olympic Games. A fair distance out of Beijing, in what felt like the middle ... read more

Date Wednesday 25th August 2010 City Daegu Climate Low 21c - high 24c Fine and sunny then a thunderstorm The day dawned a bit cooler with an overcast day today. We can always tell what the weathers doing without even getting out of bed due to the fact that we always have our Chinese laundry strung between the open curtains of our room! Today was orienteering, with Shaun “The Navman” DC trying his hand at it for the first time. He was going to go in the team event but his partner didn’t show, so he was going to have to get lost on his own! Good turnout for the event with approx 15 in the novice category. City Daegu Language Korean Currency Korean Won - 850 = NZ$1 Climate Low 26c - high 34c Fine and sunny Today we decided to join Kala and Shane with a trip to the beach for the Beach Volleyball competition as part of the Firefighter Games that they had entered. We met bright and early in the lobby at 6.30am in order to catch the supplied transportation. Firstly, a stop at EXCO to collect other competitors and then, a nice leisurely drive across the hills to the beach about an hour and a half away. The event was held at Bukbu Beach in the coastal town of Pohang. Another gorgeous day - sunny and very balmy at about 35 degrees C. Today was a “free day” for us and so we decided to use our free pass to Woobang Land - a theme park in Daegu. We caught a cab there mid-morning and entered the almost empty park. The park has roller coasters, an animal petting farm and other typical attractions found at parks like these. Our first adventure was the water ride - very tame but still enjoyable acting like kids again. We also took a ride on the carousel, dallied with dodgems, rode the rollers and wandered through the Ghost House. Shaun tried to scare us but ended up frightening and making a young Korean girl cry! Poor thing - we gave her a small kiwi soft toy to say sorry”. The roller coasters were enjoyed, but some of the other rides were too tame ... read more

City Daegu Language Korean Currency Korean Won - 850 = NZ$1 Climate Low 26c - high 36c Fine and sunny Sunday - a great day to kick back and do some housekeeping. Washing was top of the list for us, Kala and Shane. After a late breakfast we decided to regroup about 11.30am and venture into the small Korean streets to find a laundromat. Shane and Kala had researched this on the web and had a map marked with the location we needed to find. So off we went - laundry and washing powder stuffed into our soft-sided cooler bag and plenty of water on board for the expected long hot walk to the target location. Well, we walked and looked and looked and walked and asked and followed helpful Korean locals only to discover it ... read more
