Sunday 22nd December 2013 We slipped into our berth next to the battleship Iowa at the LA cruise terminal on a gorgeous, sunny morning. We stayed on-board until mid-morning. As we were staying in a suite we had preferential escort service from our concierge when we were ready to disembark. Shaun and Max headed off to pick up the rental car from Budget, 6 miles away in Long Beach while Jen and Di enjoyed relaxing in the lounge until they received the notification text that the boys were on their way back. They returned about an hour later with a nice new VW Passat, whose maximum luggage carrying capacity was tested to its limit, with 4 bods on board, 5 large suitcases and 4 cabin bags, not to mention the food and drink bag. We also ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Panamá » Panama Canal December 22nd 2013

Sunday 8th – Sunday 22ndDecember 2013 Including Jennie’s 50th Norwegian Star – Panama Canal transit and Mexican Riviera Two weeks of mostly fine and sunny with some rain – averaging 29c The Norwegian Star is our last NCL ship for this holiday adventure. It is not a large ship as it needs to be able to transit the Panama Canal. Its gross tonnage is 91,740 and guest capacity is 2,350 looked after by 1,100 crew. The Topaz Suite on the Norwegian Star was our two bedroomed apartment at sea for this sailing. What a great stroke of luck in getting this amazing suite. NCL had overbooked and so asked that we combine cabins with Di and Max and hence we got this amazing upgrade! A lovely birthday present and a great surprise. The master suite came ... read more

Thursday 5th December 2013 Landed in Miami on a nearly empty American Airlines 757 from Cancun; and hung around the airport waiting for Max to arrive from San Francisco 2 hours later. We had put one of our bags in storage at the airport five days earlier and managed to retrieve it and pay the small daily fee hassle free. Other friends were also on the same flight as Max, so with everyone and bags in tow we jumped on the free shuttle to our chosen La Quinta Inn and Suites airport hotel. After dumping the bags at the hotel the hunger pangs set in and we ambled over to a 24 hour Irish pub/hamburger restaurant right next door called Bennigans, serving Indian and Mexican and closing at 2am – go figure! November 30th – December 5th2013 Live Aqua Resort, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico Fine and sunny – 28c -30c Our flight to Cancun from Miami was quick, thankfully! The AA 757 was very run down and very full. There were a few grizzly kids and we were glad to land in Cancun after an hour 45 minutes. We chose Yellow Taxis for the ride into the Hotel Zone. They offer a deal at the airport giving 50% discount on the return trip if you book at the same time. It was US $16 per person. After a short wait we piled into a minivan with a few others and left for Live Aqua. The hotel is gorgeous. On arrival we were shown past the pair of gleaming white Rolls Royce limousines (hotel courtesy cars) into the impressive ... read more

Saturday 16th – Saturday 30th November Including Thanksgiving holiday week Norwegian Epic - Eastern Caribbean cruises Two weeks of mostly fine and sunny with some rain – averaging 29c The colossal Epic has been our home for two weeks. The first week was spent with friends from New Zealand and the second on our own. We had a balcony cabin and experienced the unusual curved walls and bed for the first time. Also, the bathroom configuration is different to the typical ship cabin. On entry into the room the shower is on the left behind a glass sliding door and the toilet on the right behind another glass sliding door. The small basin is positioned on the counter top within the main bedroom. A curved couch is between the bed and the balcony. The wardrobe space ... read more

Friday 1stNovember Boston - embarkation on the Norwegian Dawn Raining and windy 19’C We got most of the packing done last night so we could have a relaxing morning. Our first job was to go for a walk to the Goodwill store to donate some of our winter clothes. Next job was to send our winter clothes we wanted to keep back home via the USPS – US Postal Service; so with the box all loaded and taped up we caught the bus north on Washington St so we didn’t have to walk so far to the West Dedham St postal branch. The staff were very helpful and the 10kg box with insurance was on its way back to NZ for $138. This was a weight off our minds AND a weight out of OUR BAGS! ... read more

Monday 28th October Boston, South End Sunny 14'C This morning we woke up in Salem to another beautiful day. Our last task of the roadie ahead - just needing to drop off the RV at the Camping World RV depot. It only took us about half an hour to get there after refueling and emptying out the unmentionables at the West Essex Treatment plant in Salem - for free. Had a funny surprise when we walked into the office at the depot - Jimmy, who had checked us out from the NY office 10 days ago, was there helping out! In no time our vehicle was all handed back with no hassles; only an additional $175 for an extra 400 kms driven over our quota. The depot paid for a shuttle into Boston instead of to ... read more

Friday 25thOctober Fine, sunny and cool – 11c Newport, RI – Eastham, Cape Cod, MA 177 miles traveled Wow, another blue sky and bright sunshine - we are getting such great weather - so lucky! We left the RV Park about 9.30am and drove the short distance into Newport township. We retraced our steps of a couple of weeks ago when we were here on the Crystal Symphony. The day was just as glorious and perfect to show off the “summer cottages” along Bellevue Avenue. This time after a quick drive along the famous avenue, we decide to park up and wander the Cliff Walk. Unfortunately just half a mile into it we are met by a closure as there are construction workers making some repairs. We did manage to see the Breakers mansion from the ... read more

Wednesday 23rdOctober Quakertown, PA – Mystic, Connecticut Coastline 287 miles travelled Overcast and cool – 11c A long driving day is ahead today, so after scrambled eggs for brekky we depart early- heading for the coastline of Connecticut. We dropped the $37 into the slot at the camping ground office as it wasn’t yet open and Nancy didn’t answer the knock at her trailer door. Generally the camp ground is very quiet and we notice in the brochure that everyone has to pack up and leave before the 1st of November. In fact many of the RV parks are already closed, so we are finishing our RV travel in these parts just in time. As we depart Quakertown we realise how pretty it is around these parts. Much of the beauty we had missed yesterday, as ... read more

Tuesday 22ndOctober 2013 Washington DC – Pennsylvania Fine and overcast – 15c We disconnected our home and departed Cherry Hill about 9am, bound for Gettysburg National Military Park Museum in Maryland. En route we happened to notice a sign leading to the Fallen Firefighter’s Memorial in a small town called Emmitsburg. The National Emergency Management training facility is here. After passing security and leaving our IDs at the main gate they allowed us in, visitors passes attached. There are two memorials – one commemorating all the US firefighters who died on duty between the years 1981 and the present. It was opened by Ronald Reagan. A brass plaque for each year is placed around a taller monument with an eternal flame. All names and States are listed on the plaque which is placed on a stone ... read more
