City Daegu Language Korean Currency Korean Won - 850 = NZ$1 Climate Low 26c - high 36c Fine and sunny When we woke we went down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast and ran into Tomas from Germany. We also saw Shane and Kala from NZ along with Steve McSweeney, Joachim, Andrea and Alex from Germany, among others. Breakfast was a big spread of all sorts of foods including Korean fare as well - e.g. dumplings, fish, unusually shaped mushrooms and other unrecognisable items. After breakfast we met up with the group to head off to EXCO - the main registration and meeting point for the Firefighter Games. We got there by local bus - about half an hour away for 1100W approx NZ$1.50. After registration we went through the Fire and Rescue Expo where many ... read more

City Shanghai/ Hong Kong/ Seoul/ Daegu Language Bit of Everything Currency Korean Won 850W = NZ$1.00 Climate 35’C. Fine and sunny We awoke to a sunny day with only a few clouds, a great day for travelling. It was definitely worth staying at the airport hotel (Airport Motel 168) as it saved us a very early start from the city. We were actually able to have quite a relaxed start to the day, only having to check in 40 minutes before our flight. Luggage weight was good with Shaun on 24.5kgs and Jennie on 23.5kgs. On board our Cathy Pacific 777 300 series and Shaun swore he recognised the first officers voice on the PA system. He asked if Paul was on the flight deck and the cabin crew said “Yes, but he is too busy ... read more

City Shanghai, China Language Mandarin Currency Chinese Yuan Climate high 36c - low 26c - sunny This was our last day at the apartment before heading to the airport hotel so decided to spend the morning checking out the view from the 88th floor of the Jinmao tower. We walked back via the musical instrument district to the Bund and went underneath the river through the Bund sightseeing tunnel at a very pricey fee of 45Y - a lot more than the 3Y for the metro! The experience made us smile as it was like a light show from the 70’s as we travelled through the tunnel. Out the other side and we walked to the Jinmao tunnel and caught the lift up to the 88th floor. Quite a weird feeling as you don’t feel the ... read more

City Shanghai, China Language Mandarin Currency Chinese Yuan Climate high 34c - low 25c - sunny, thunderstorm then fine This morning our plan was to venture out to the “Cybercity” store to buy some cheap computer peripherals on our way to the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel to the other side of the river. On our shopping list in particular was to purchase a new memory stick - as all our life is stored on about half a dozen USB memory sticks that clutter up the bag and take up precious space. We also thought a small travel mouse could be useful and a nice sleeve to keep the netbook protected (it lives in its original packaging at present). So off we went in the direction we thought we had been given but we soon realised that we ... read more

City Shanghai, China Language Mandarin Currency Chinese Yuan Climate high 34c - low 25c - sunny then a big thunderstorm Today was Expo day. We decided to grab a coffee and pastries (again) on the run and we intended to be at the gates of Expo by about 8.30am. This didn’t happen as Jennie led us once again out the front door of the hotel in the wrong direction! After another exploratory loop we found our way back to our metro stop just a couple of minutes from the hotel. It is a great system and once we worked out that there is an “English” button on the self-service kiosk for tickets we were away....with our 3Y ticket to Expo - just 5 stops away. We are truly fascinated by the lack of consideration on the ... read more

City Shanghai, China Language Mandarin Currency Chinese Yuan - 5Y = NZ$1 Climate high 35c - low 27c -hot and very sunny Awake early (around 6am) we thought it would be a good idea to venture out along the Bund and witness the early morning Tai Chi and other morning exercises that the Bund is renowned for. On the way we passed a lovely bakery that sold wonderful pastries and great coffee. We bought three varieties of goodies and 2 coffees for our breakfast. All up a total of about 42Y or approx NZ$8. Jennie’s typical excellent navigational skills were sadly lacking after such a yummy breakfast and so after an unscheduled 1-2 kilometre scenic detour - it was too late to witness the early morning Bund activities. Instead we decided to carry on walking towards ... read more

City Shanghai, China Language Mandarin Currency Chinese Yuan Climate high 34c - low 27c - fine but a little smoggy After another great night’s sleep we awoke early in order to get to the airport for 7.30am. Kerrie and David dropped us off - about a 15 minute drive from their house. It was an easy check-in and we were all boarded and ready to depart at 9.25am as scheduled. We did depart a little later due to a lot of unexpected extra luggage being loaded (no, not ours!). The flight to Shanghai took about 11 hours. We both stayed awake for most of the journey being a day flight. We did catch a few ZZZs as we probably needed to still catch up on sleep from the late nights in Sydney and the time zone ... read more

City Sydney Language English Currency Australian dollar Climate high 19c - low 9c - sunny Saturday dawned bright, early and noisy as one would come to expect from Australia. In fact it started about 5.00am with the orchestral symphony of bird squawks, squeaks and screeches, ensuring we didn’t sleep in and miss our first full day of holidays. Apparently they were on their best behaviour. But it was not enough to deter us falling asleep again! In fact it was a very relaxing day, with a walk along the San Souci coast enjoyed by all (including Wally the dog) in the morning and a good ol’ gourmet Ozzie burger for lunch. This was all in preparation for a very special occasion in the evening. We were to experience a dining delight at Sepia with David and ... read more

Friday the 13th - a great day to start a wonderful holiday - certainly a "lucky for some" day for us! City Sydney Language English Currency Australian dollar - rate $0.79 Climate high 18c - low 9c Our first day was a series of logistical activities. Up at 6am and cleaning the house until Jennie went to work for the morning. Shaun then dropped our belongings that were remaining behind into our lock-up and then took the car to its storage facility in Ohario Valley. Mum and Dad Davis met Shaun there and kindly acted as our airport chauffeur service. We left Wellington at about 4pm and arrived into Sydney at about 6.30pm on Friday evening. It was an excellent flight on Qantas as we typically experience. Dave and Kerrie Linke collected us and took us ... read more
