It's warming up here. No minus something temperatures in the morning. We start out at about 5 above zero and warm up to 28. Awesomeness! Sad news from the Iditarod trail. A dog has died. I don't have details but I'll fill you in when I know. BTW - I am sworn to confidentiality in my role as a volunteer. I don't put anything on this blog that is not already news on TV and newspapers. The things I take from the website are there for everyone to see. Today was a slow day at Anchorage Network Center. Many of the mushers are taking their 8 hour or 24 hour mandatory layovers. Once they start moving again the positions will start to change. I heard they were flying 80 dropped dogs back to Anchorage so I ... read more

Today was a tough day. We got lots of conflicting information from the trail. We had teams checking in at Galena (checkpoint 5) and there was no record of them checking out of Ruby (checkpoint 4). However, we found out that the volunteer at Ruby was working on his own for many hours and couldn't keep up with mushers arriving, mushers leaving, and the dog count. It's really important to keep track of the dog count. At each checkpoint the dogs are checked by a veterinarian. Dogs are dropped all the time so don't let this alarm you. It can be for simple or serious things. We had discrepancies with the number of dogs leaving one checkpoint and arriving at another. BUT it's our job to figure this all out. I was working with Rex, a ... read more

Time for musher profiles. These are veterans who have won many races. Jeff King Bib Number: 34 Hometown: Denali, Alaska Website: http://www.huskyhomestead.com Biography Jeff King, 61, was born and raised in California. He came to Alaska in 1975 to “seek adventure.” He began mushing in 1976 after he heard Jerry Riley’s race finish while listening to the radio. Jeff has an outstanding race record, including a Yukon Quest victory in 1981 and four Iditarod victories. He has three adult daughters, Cali, Tessa and Ellen. All the girls have run the Jr. Iditarod, and Cali finished the Iditarod. King moved to Alaska in 1975 and began r... read more

I had a day off from working with the Iditarod Race, so I rented a car. My goal today was to see Denali. 36 years ago I was here with Ed (my husband), and we never saw the peak. We had miserable weather while up here in June 1981, but we perservered through it and did as much sightseeing as we could. I remember reading the Alaska Milepost " and on your left you will see blah blah blah mountains . . ." We couldn't see crap - rain, clouds, wind. But now the weather is absolutely beautiful. My AirBnB host told me of a road I could take to see Denali. I rented a car with studded tires and drove up Arctic Valley Rd. I had to remember how to drive on black ice. I ... read more

I woke up to minus 10 temperature here in Anchorage. On the Iditarod Trail it's minus 40! I am truly amazed at these mushers. Today Rex (another volunteer) & I spent our shift logging mushers in and out of Manley Hot Springs. Lots of mushers rested in Manley and took off between 3-5 p.m. Even though it's really cold, alot of the mushers like traveling at night. I think the snow is better at night and they can travel faster. There is a "Teacher on the Trail" part of the website. This is a competitive position that teachers can apply for. This year's Teacher on the Trail is Annie Kelley, a fourth grade teacher from Chicago. She travels from checkpoint to checkpoint reporting in for teachers & schools across the country. Here's an example of some ... read more

Today was my first day volunteering at the Anchorage Network Center (ANC). This was what is called restart day for the race - the official beginning. The temperature in the morning in Fairbanks was minus 35! I don't know how these mushers do this. I checked the weather for the next 3 checkpoints and the low temperature was ranging from -35 to - 38. We watched the start on the website and logged in their start times. The first checkpoint was at Nenana, 60 miles from Fairbanks. All of the checkpoints are connect to ANC by computer and phone (although I heard that 2 checkpoints just have satellite phones because they are so remote). We get emails from the other checkpoints and respond to them. For example - the mushers sent their equipment bags forward (with ... read more

Today was a day of being a tourist. I planned on taking the bus (bus stop very close to house I'm staying in), and my host thought the bus came on the half hour. Not so - I missed the bus by 6 minutes and the next one was in an hour. My host drove me downtown and told me how to take the bus home. I went to the Anchorage Museum, $10 for seniors. There was a display on US-Russia going back well before the US purchase of the land. The division of US-Russian land divided local tribes that traveled back & forth. When they were denied access to travel across the boundary many of them didn't see relatives. Finally an agreement was made between Us & Russia that allows them to visit with special ... read more

Today the ceremonial start of the Iditarod took place in downtown Anchorage. This is tradition and the teams start on 4th street and go 11 miles. The actual start of the race is in Willow - usually. This year parts of the trail doesn't have enough snow and they moved the start to Fairbanks (Monday, March 7th). The temperature in Fairbanks is minus 35, so I'll stay in balmy Anchorage where today's top temperature was 16! I caught the "volunteer's" shuttle to go downtown, arriving at about 7:30 a.m. I think it was minus 2 degrees. I walked around looking at the teams. I was surprised that the dogs are small. My impression, thanks to Hollywood, is that the dogs are bigger. These dogs were so excited and ready to go. There are lots of volunteer ... read more

I'm here in Anchorage. The flight was spectacular and the views of the mountains incredible, thanks to the cold, clear air. The mountains around here seem endless. They don't allow Lyft or Uber here - bit of shock when I arrived. Took cab to house I'm staying in - cute little place. My host, CJ, is at work. My room is cute, and the German Shepherd, Jazzi, welcomed me. I walked over to the Lakefront Hotel where I will be volunteering. Of course they had Iditarod souvenirs for sale and I shopped. I had my training with about 70 people. Most of the volunteers are from Alaska, but there are people here from all over the US. Some of them are assigned to a trail checkpoint - which means they keep track of when mushers arrive ... read more

The "ceremonial" start is in Anchorage (I'll be there !}, and the official start is on Monday from Fairbanks. The start was moved from Willow to Fairbanks due to lack of snow on parts of the trail.
