May 30, 2018 Today we left beautiful Lake Bled in Slovenia and traveled to Italy. I really wish I had more time in Slovenia. I read the section in my Rick Steves travel book about the Julian Alps (named for Julius Ceasar) which are in the NW part of Slovenia. This area is very close to the Italian and Austrian borders and had many battles during WWII. And it seems to be very beautiful too. Before I move on to discussing Italy I want to say a few things about Croatia & Slovenia. I always felt safe there, it's clean, the only graffiti I saw was in Split and Ljubljana, the people were always nice, never rude, and the places we visited were beautiful. Cars always stopped to let us cross the roads (not so in ... read more

May 29, 2018 Slovenia, where Melania Trump is from, is a beautiful country. The history is similar to Croatia: Illyrians, Celtic, Roman settlements, then Slavs moved in when the Roman empire declined. The Franks conquered in 8th century, then Hapsburg empire. The Ottomans tried to conquer, then they were caught between the Austria-Venice tug of war for power. Then Napoleon came through. Many people confuse Slovenia with Slovakia. Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia and is bordered by Italy, Austria, & Croatia. Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia and the Czechs & Slovaks split up and now we have Slovakia. It is NE & two countries away from Slovenia. We are here at Lake Bled, which is not far from the Austrian border, and the buildings look very Austrian. We are in the Julian Alps which is just ... read more

Monday, May 28 Today we left beautiful Plitvice Lakes National Park and traveled to Opatija, which is on the coast of northern Croatia. While on the route our tour guide, Branko, pointed out an island called Krk. Someone on the bus asked him if he wanted to buy a vowel. Missing vowels everywhere! I've noticed the architecture of the buildings has changed alot and looks more Austrian. Opatija is a cute, small coastal town and was and still is the vacation spot for wealthy Eastern Europeans. I walked the waterfront promenade, Lungomare, and soon our group was on it's way to Slovenia. The border crossing into Slovenia was uneventful & this time I did get a stamp in my passport (did not get one in Montenegro), and we traveled to Postojina (poh-STOY-nah) Caves. Since the whole ... read more

Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27 We left Split and went to Trogir, a small island not far from Split. It's a small place with a cathedral, museum, monastery and fortress. I wandered around, listened to a female a capella group, found the bayfront promenade, and went to Kamerlengo Fortress. The Fortress was built around 1420 when Trogir became part of the Venetian empire. When we left here we drove inland and stopped near Krka National Park where the Krka River forms waterfalls and lakes. We couldn't actually see this from where we stopped though. Then we traveled further inland to Plitvice Lakes National Park, the most visited park in Croatia. Since we arrived around 5 p.m. we would see the attractions the next day. We had another group meal that evening with more guitar ... read more

Today we left beautiful Dubrovnik to travel north to Split. We passed several cruise ships, one of them was the Celebrity Constellation which had been in Kotor yesterday. Our hotel was near the New Port and there are lots of "booze cruise" one day boats here that take you around the islands and fill you up with food & booze. There is a small piece of Bosnia that goes to the Adriatic Sea, so we crossed from Croatia to Bosnia, stopped for coffee, then 6 kilometers later back into Croatia. The border crossing were quick. Apparently this land strip provided a buffer between Dubrovniks land to the south, and Venetian controlled areas to the north, and it has stayed that way. The Croatians are actually discussing building a bridge to nearby islands so that drivers don't ... read more

Thursday, May 24 Today we took a day trip to Montenegro - one of the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Border crossings are interesting. Our guide, Branko, had no way of guessing what would happen. Turns out the Croatia border crossing was slow, about 45 minutes, and a policeman comes on the bus & collects everyone's passports & takes them in the office & scans them. The Montenegro crossing was a breeze, they waved us through. On the way back in the afternoon it was similar except the Croatia crossing was only 15 minutes. Montenegro is south of Croatia, and although not part of the EU, their currency is Euros. It's a very mountainous country, and small - smaller than state of Connecticut. Their history is similar but different than Croatia: Illyrians, Romans, Venetians, Austrians, Russians, ... read more

I arrived in Dubrovnik Tuesday, May 22nd, but after a long flight from San Diego via Frankfurt I was too tired to do a blog entry - and jet lagged. Croatia is 9 hours ahead of California. Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a city on the Adriatic Coast, also called the Dalmation Coast, with a long, interesting history. First a quick history of Croatia: First settlers - Illyrians believed to be ancestors of Albanians. Romans moved in around 229 B.C., Rome fell in 5th century & Slavs moved in. 925 A.D. Tomislav united north & south Croatia. Croatia entered into alliance with Hungarians in 1102, Venetians controlled coast; by 15th century Ottomans controlled inland & challenged Venetians for control of coast (& lost). 17th century Habsburgs forced Ottomans out inland Croatia, then Venice & ... read more

I leave in 2 days - it's been an unbelievable experience. I came here not knowing what I was doing, who I would meet, and what would happen while I'm here. I had no expectations because I had no idea what would happen. All I knew about the Olympics is what I saw on TV from previous Olympics. The Koreans did a fabulous job preparing for the Olympics. They put in roads, 2 major train stations, improved train timetables, arranged for hundreds of buses to move around workforce, spectators, and athletes. They built the venues where the competition would be held. There were decorative banners and mascots everywhere. The Olympic Park had lots of fun things to do inbetween competition events. There were events at the beach, and hospitality houses (I only made it to 2) ... read more

I want to start out by thanking everyone for your wonderful comments. I'm so busy right now that I barely have time to do this blog, so I can't respond to your comments. I'm glad you are enjoying this blog and an insider view of how the Olympics operate and what volunteers do. I'm sure you have seen all the volunteers at the venues and competitions in their red and gray uniforms. I have no idea how many volunteers there are, but it's alot. My position is an NOC Assistant. I was offered the position as an NOC Assistant in October 2017. They described the duties as: "The role of an NOC/NPC Assistant you have chosen is an elite volunteer position who offers assistance in a variety of tasks during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
