Last night I went to an amazing concert at the Cultural Center. An orchestra from Denmark had been here a week doing friendship teaching with musicians in Nuuk. The frustrating part about the concert was not understanding a word that was said. A woman introduced each piece of music and also 2 special guests (mayor of Nuuk and mayor of city in Denmark). The conductor spoke in Danish about something, then back to the woman speaking in Greenlandic. The first 2 pieces had the interns playing with the orchestra, then the rest of the concert was by the Danish orchestra. There was also a male and female singer. I can't upload the video to this blog because I have the basic version of the blog and they don't allow uploads of videos. Today we left Nuuk ... read more

Our little group had different things to do today. John and Sheila had prebooked a boat trip that would go up the fjord, catch fish, go to a country restaurant and cook the fish they caught. Nick, Angela, and I did not sign up for that trip because it was expensive. Nick and Angela are amazing hikers and decided to hike the high peak behind town. My knee is still a little sore from the fall I took a few days ago, so I only want to do a short hike. Jan suggested we take the #1 bus which would give us a good overview of how Nuuk had expanded drastically since the 90's. We all took the bus, and Nick & Angela got off to do their hike. The rest of us did the loop, ... read more

Greenland is not for sale no matter what Trump thinks. The Danes got a good laugh out of that one. This morning our ship arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. From Wikipedia: Nuuk (Greenlandic pronunciation: , Danish: ; Danish: Godthåb) is the capital and largest city of Greenland. It is the seat of url=https://en.wi... read more

Today was a very relaxing day on the boat. Other than 3 meals today, looking for whales (never saw any), watching movies, spotting occasional icebergs, and just hanging out there’s not much to do on this boat. It’s not like cruise ships: no casino, pool, spa, exercise room, nightly show, etc. It’s just a transport boat. The highlight today was a visit to the bridge. We were able to ask the captain lots of questions. Turns out we are in water that is too shallow for whales, so hopefully we will see whales north of here. We travel at 11 knots, the water is about 48 meters deep (when we were there), and the water temperature is 3 Celsius. The boat made 3 stops today at different villages. I think the villages are cute, but I ... read more

Today we had a pleasant day in Qaqortog. We had a leisurely morning and met at 10 a.m. Jan took us to the tannery where we had a tour. I have difficulty with this because it is a tannery for seal skins. I understand the subsistence aspect of it and that Inuit have been making sealskin clothing for eons, but I don’t like the fashion part of it. I remember years ago Greenpeace would try to block people from clubbing the young harbor seals. There was so much protest the sales of sealskin products decreased. This tannery sells their products to Greenland, Iceland, and Europe only. The sealskins are brought here (the only tannery in Greenland) by the hunters, and are processed here, taking 3-4 weeks before they are ready for sewing. The skins can come ... read more

Then wind was still whipping crazy with whitecaps and vapor coming off the bay. Jan had to make alternate plans for us to get to Qaqortoq. The original plan was for a boat to pick us up in Igaliku and transport us to Quqortoq, stopping to see a church ruin. But the wind dictated we weren't going to do that. Plan #2 is to go up & over the ridge by the same route we had walked previously and catch a boat there. The boat ride would take longer, but would be safer. After lots of discussion they decided to give us 6 and a German couple a ride to the other boat dock, and transport our luggage. We met the boat at about 1:45 p.m., and took a fun, bumpy ride to Qaqortoq, which took ... read more

Today 4 of us took a 10 mile hike to see Qooroq glacier. Sheila and John dii not go (John did hike a short distance with us and then turned around) because Sheila’s knee is hurting a lot. In the beginning we were hiking on the road, which is quite rocky, and I walked on the grass next to the road. My toe got stuck in a lump of grass and I pancaked face first in the grass. I wasn’t hurt, just embarrassed. This was Fall #1. Angela, Rick, Jan, and I continued on the road up to several small lakes, then climbed up to a ridge. The fohn winds had arrived during the night and were blowing about 35 miles per hour. Jan told us it would get worse. We arrived at the viewpoint where ... read more

Today was an adventurous day. It started out with meeting a NASA scientist who measures the effect the ocean has on the glaciers. They were going out that day on an airplane to do measurements. He calls himself “Climate Elvis” and has a patch that says “OMG, Oceans Melting Greenland”. On the map I’ve included there are numbers 1 through 4. That is the route we took today. #1 is Narsarsauq; #2 is Qussiarsuk, #3 is Itilleq, and #4 is Igaliku. This will make more sense as you read on. We checked out of our hotel and got on a small boat to travel from Narsarsuaq across the Qooroq Fjord to Qassiarsuk, just across from Narsarsuaq. This place is supposedly where Erik the Red settled when he went to Greenland in 985. At the dock, Jan ... read more

Greetings from Greenland! Today has been a fabulous day. I took a taxi from the AirBnB to the domestic airport and met the Greenland tour group – 5 of us and our leader Jan (pronounced “Yen”). A couple from New York City: John and Sheila, and a couple from Australia (somewhere north of Sydney): Rick and Angela, and me. Jan said the tour was almost cancelled due to the low number of participants, but they decided to allow the trip to go. Whew – dodged a bullet there. You may be wondering, why Greenland? I've been wanting to come here for about 5 years. Every time I flew to or from Europe I would see the south tip of Greenland and wonder what it would be like to visit there. Then my friend Ellen tells me ... read more

First day of my trip: both flights were on time, I caught the bus from the airport to Reykjavik (45 minute ride), found my AirBnB, and spent the day exploring Reykjavik. I'm having difficulty pronouncing anything. For example, my AirBnb is on Kjartansgata. I got dropped of on Hateigsvegur. Oh well, most people here speak English so I just show them the map and point to where I want to go. First stop today was the Hallgrimskirkja, the iconic church that is visible from all over Reykjavik. I went up the tower to get a good view of the city. Next I walked through center of town and stopped by the Volcano House. I saw 2 films about volcano eruptions on Iceland. There is a rift zone that goes through approximately the middle of Iceland, which ... read more
