Our leader Khaled keeps telling us that the next thing we do will be the best ever, and I keep wondering how that could be so. We got up early, had breakfast at 6, and left the Feluccas. We traveled by support boat to the dock where our bus was waiting. This bus driver’s name is Abraham. We are still traveling north, this time by bus. We stopped at the Temple Kom Ombo. It was originally an Egyptian city called Nubt, meaning City of Gold (not to be confused with the city north of Naqada that was also called Nubt/Ombos). Nubt is also known as Nubet or Nubyt (Nbyt). It became a Greek settlement during the Greco-Roman Period. The town's location on the url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nil... read more

Felucca Day Every time I think I’ve had the best day yet in Egypt, another amazing day happens. I would like to mention one thing. Before I came here several people expressed concern that it is not safe here. I have felt very safe. Our guide Khaled watches out for us and makes sure we know the right things to do. Egyptian people are really nice. We have had some drivers that speak little English, but we’ve been able to communicate. I sit near the front of the bus, and Lisa (Australia) and I wave at lots of people and they smile and wave back, give us the thumbs up, etc. I even spent time in the market haggling over prices for items, and I never felt threatened. Today I started out by visiting the Coptic ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Abu Simbel March 2nd 2020

I can't believe how incredible the Abu Simbel Temple is. Before I get to that I want to include a few details. I am traveling with GAdventures for the "Best of Egypt, Jordan, and Israel". I have taken many GAdventures trips before and I've been pleased with all of them. Our group consist of mostly Australians, 1 Brit, 1 Columbian, 2 Canadians, and 3 Americans (14 in all). Our guide is Khaled - has great stories, very knowledable, very funny, and very talented (he is a musician and has an Egyptian cooking show). The group is compatible and fun. Also, I haven't labeled the pictures for 3 days because I'm using someone's hotspot and I have limited time. Tomorrow we get on a Felucca and do an overnight to Luxor - so I won't have wifi ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Aswan March 1st 2020

I am using someone’s hotspot so this entry will not have photos until I have better wifi. Last night we got on the train for the overnight to Aswan. The compartments are small, bunkbed style. Caroline from Australia is my roommate. They served us a good chicken dinner, then to bed. The coach jerks around from time to time, but the motion of the train is good for sleeping. We got to Aswan and brought our luggage to the hotel. The rooms weren’t ready yet so we dropped them off and went to the Philae Temple Complex. I did not have wifi on the train, and the wifi at our hotel in Aswan is terrible, so the photos will not be labeled because I'm using someone's hot spot. Today our leader Khaled (aka “Elvis”) brought us to the Egyptian Museum and gave us a whirlwind tour of the highlights of the museum. This museum houses a spectacular collection of Pharoanic antiquities. There are more than 120,000 pieces on display from statues to sarcophagus, to jewelry, to boats, to ancient papyrus, with the most spectacular the items from King Tut’s tomb. King Tut only served as King 7 or 8 years and died when he was 19 or 20. He was not the most significant king in Ancient Egypt, but his tomb was intact and not raided so all of the items were there ... read more

Ahhh - the ocean (ahem - my tour guide said "Not ocean, the sea") Okay, the Mediterranean Sea. I love the ocean/sea because I live near the ocean/sea. From Wikipedia: Alexandria is the second-largest city in Egypt and a major economic center. With a population of 5,200,000, Alexandria is the largest city on the Mediterranean, the sixth-largest city in the Arab world and the ninth-largest in Africa. The city extends about 40 km (25 mi) at the url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_coast_of_Egyp... read more

After 22 hours flying from San Diego to San Francisco to Frankfurt to Cairo – I arrived on Wednesday, Feb. 25th. The flight to Frankfurt was not crowded so everyone found seats to stretch out on and sleep. Thankfully I arranged an airport pickup. Ali helped me with the customs steps and then we got into the van for a 1 hour ride to the hotel. Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak died and there were street closures so it took longer to get to the hotel – plus the traffic is a nightmare. I arrived 2 days before the tour starts so I figured out what I wanted to see. Ali told me I could get in touch with the trip guide but for some reason I couldn’t get through to his phone. Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík August 31st 2019

Our trip ends today. We continue traveling around the Ring Road back to Reykjavik with some interesting stops along the way. Technically we are in West Iceland traveling back to Southwest Iceland. First stop is Grabrok, a volcano with a nice crater that has a walk up it. Before I get to today's activities, I would like to give information about the Ring Road. From Wikipedia: Route 1 or the Ring Road (Icelandic: Þjóðvegur 1 or Hringvegur) is a national road in Iceland that runs around the island and connects most of the inhabited parts of the country. The total length of the road is 1,332 kilometres (828 mi). Some of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland, such as the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, Dyrhólaey/ur... read more

Europe » Iceland » North » Akureyri August 29th 2019

Now we are in North Iceland and our weather is acceptable - sporatic rain but not clear either. We left Egilsstair and traveled the Highlands to an isolated farm. The man who lives here was so far away from a church that he built his own church. He has turned his farm into accommodations, camping, cafe, gift shop, and a cute tourist stop. Sindri, our guide, said there was an arctic fox and he could call him from his burrow, because Sindri speaks fox saying he learned from a girlfriend who was foxy (Sindri is quite the jokester). Sure enough, Sindri called him and a young arctic fox comes out of the burrow where he sleeps. From here we went to Dettifoss.
