Today we continued driving around the Ring Road. We are traveling the East Fjords, and there are plenty of them. Sindri, our guide, had a surprise for us this morning. He took us to Stokksnes. From Wikipedia: Stokksnes is a headland on the southeastern Icelandic coast, near Hofn and Hornafjördur. Stokksnes is located south to the mountain Kastarárfjall, where the dent Vestarahorn was featured in the Bollywood film Dilwale.url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... read more

We're moving around the island in a counterclockwise direction, so we are at the south part of the island. The storms hit from the south and the wind picks up alot of moisture. As the air rises over the mountains it drop the precipitation as snow which is why the largest glaciers are on the south side of the island. Then volcanoes erupt and push through the glaciers which causes massive floods. We drove by massive lava fields; some had moss all over them and some looked like they happened yesterday. We also went by areas that massive glacier floods had brought tons of debris, boulders, and ice. The shoreline was actually pushed out by debris from glacier outflow. We had alot to do today - and all of it in cold, windy, driving rain. After all the participants of the tour with Arctic Adventures were picked up, we were on our way. Our guide is Sindri, and he is the driver and guide for this trip. He is a wealth of information and he talks the whole time he is driving through this horrible rain. My cousin said all the photos are not coming through. I don't know why, maybe the wi-fi connection? Sorry about that. I killed you with iceberg photos, now I'm going to kill you with waterfall photos. First stop: Thingvellir. When I packed clothing for this trip I figured I needed the warm clothing and rain gear for Greenland. Wow was I wrong. It rained once in Greenland, and drizzled another day. It was cold only near the glaciers and icebergs. The rest of the time the weather was great. Yesterday was a good day in Reykjavik, but I knew the rain was coming, but I didn't know it would be this bad. It's cold, very windy, and raining sideways. Today I transferred from my AirBnB to Hotel Orkin. Luckily I was able to walk there before the rain hit, about a 20 minute walk. I put my luggage in storage, rested awhile, then figured out how to take the public bus to Perlan. It was actually quite easy and the bus drivers were very helpful ... read more

Yes, you read that correctly - today I went to the penis museum. If you are offended by photos of penises, don't look at the pictures for this entry. I slept in today because I knew I would be doing alot of walking. My AirBnB is a little east of the city center, but not too far so I decided to walk. I went along the waterfront where a marathon and half-marathon was taking place. I could hear music blaring from somewhere closer to the city center. Today is Culture Day, and there are bands and music all over the city. Some museums are free today, and there is food and food trucks everywhere. Tons of people out walking around, dancing in the square, and kids having mock battles. I went to the Phallus Museum out ... read more

Today our Greenland tour is over. The last 2 weeks have been fun, adventurous, surprising, vigorous, educational, and wonderful. Our small group of 5 plus our leader Jan started out in really small village, visited the Erik the Red settlement, then went to larger villages, hiked in 70 mph wind, took an alternative boat trip to Quarqatog due to the wind, visited a tannery, got on a ferry to Nuuk, had a rainy day in Nuuk, got on a flight to Ilulisat and this is when things got really awesome. We got on another boat to Eqi Glacier camp where we stayed for 2 nights, then took the boat back to Ilulissat. The next day we saw massive icebergs that calve from the most active glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. We had a sunset boat trip ... read more

Today Jan gave us a walking tour of Ilulissat. It drizzled for awhile but stopped after about an hour. First we went to the harbor. Ilulissat exports supposedly 75% of the world's market for shrimp. They also hunt whales here, but tourism seems to be a large industry. Temperature today low to mid 40's. From Wikipedia: Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn or Jacobshaven, is the municipal seat and largest town of the Avannaata municipality in western Greenland, located approximately 350 km (220 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. Today we had to leave Eqi Glacier camp. The boat does a round trip: it picks up people in Ilulissat and brings them here, spends about 1-2 hours viewing the glacier calving, then comes to the dock to drop people off at Eqi Glacier camp. The people that are leaving Eqi Glacier Camp get on board and travel back to Ilulissat. Our pickup time was approximately 3 p.m. The boat also supplies the staff there with food, beer, wine, soda, alcohol, and whatever else they need to run the place. I talked to one of the staff today and he said they arrived May 21 to do some work on the place, and the first visitors were June 21. They continue to get guests till early September, then they winterize the place and leave. He said ... read more

After breakfast we hiked to the lateral moraine where there is an excellent viewing area of the glacier. The roundtrip distance is about 7.5 miles. Two of the researchers passed me on the way up and they had a drone. More on this later. I was able to sit in front of the glacier for 2 hours just watching pieces calving off. It was difficult to take a video because by the time I turned the video on the piece had already fallen into the fjord. The pieces just kept falling off and the location moved around so you could never guess where the next one would happen. The boat we came out on yesterday showed up today to give their passengers a view of the calving and the boat looked so small. Good to have ... read more

I haven't had Wi-Fi or cell phone service for a few days. We were in a remote camp. https://goo.gl/maps/ucvyVQ48DPQXxDVP7 Today we left Ilulissat to go on the boat that would take us to Eqi Glacier. The boat was quite full of people, some just out for the day and some like us who will stay at the Ice Camp. The boat trip took 3 ½ hours and we traveled up the fjord towards the Glacier. We passed so many icebergs – all sizes, all shapes, all textures. I took so many pictures and videos of the icebergs. As we approached the Glaciers the icebergs got bigger – I mean huge, as big as an aircraft carrier. At one point we went through this ice mush to get further up the fjord. There are 2 glaciers at ... read more
