We're moving around the island in a counterclockwise direction, so we are at the south part of the island. The storms hit from the south and the wind picks up alot of moisture. As the air rises over the mountains it drop the precipitation as snow which is why the largest glaciers are on the south side of the island. Then volcanoes erupt and push through the glaciers which causes massive floods. We drove by massive lava fields; some had moss all over them and some looked like they happened yesterday. We also went by areas that massive glacier floods had brought tons of debris, boulders, and ice. The shoreline was actually pushed out by debris from glacier outflow. When I packed clothing for this trip I figured I needed the warm clothing and rain gear for Greenland. Wow was I wrong. It rained once in Greenland, and drizzled another day. It was cold only near the glaciers and icebergs. The rest of the time the weather was great. Yesterday was a good day in Reykjavik, but I knew the rain was coming, but I didn't know it would be this bad. It's cold, very windy, and raining sideways. Today I transferred from my AirBnB to Hotel Orkin. Luckily I was able to walk there before the rain hit, about a 20 minute walk. Today our Greenland tour is over. The last 2 weeks have been fun, adventurous, surprising, vigorous, educational, and wonderful. Our small group of 5 plus our leader Jan started out in really small village, visited the Erik the Red settlement, then went to larger villages, hiked in 70 mph wind, took an alternative boat trip to Quarqatog due to the wind, visited a tannery, got on a ferry to Nuuk, had a rainy day in Nuuk, got on a flight to Ilulisat and this is when things got really awesome. We got on another boat to Eqi Glacier camp where we stayed for 2 nights, then took the boat back to Ilulissat. Today we had to leave Eqi Glacier camp. The boat does a round trip: it picks up people in Ilulissat and brings them here, spends about 1-2 hours viewing the glacier calving, then comes to the dock to drop people off at Eqi Glacier camp. The people that are leaving Eqi Glacier Camp get on board and travel back to Ilulissat. Our pickup time was approximately 3 p.m. The boat also supplies the staff there with food, beer, wine, soda, alcohol, and whatever else they need to run the place. I talked to one of the staff today and he said they arrived May 21 to do some work on the place, and the first visitors were June 21. The boat was quite full of people, some just out for the day and some like us who will stay at the Ice Camp. The boat trip took 3 ½ hours and we traveled up the fjord towards the Glacier. We passed so many icebergs – all sizes, all shapes, all textures. I took so many pictures and videos of the icebergs. As we approached the Glaciers the icebergs got bigger – I mean huge, as big as an aircraft carrier. At one point we went through this ice mush to get further up the fjord.
