November 8 – Caen – I got up early again and did a little homework and then drank my tea and thought things over. Then I went downstairs and asked the manager if it would be OK for me to bring my baggage down and leave them while I went out and come back around noon to get them and go to the other hotel. She said that would be fine. So I left my luggage and turned in my key and walked over to the tram stop Bernieres and caught the tram. I took the tram all the way out till it ended at the Herouville St Clair stop and got off. I watched which way the people were going and noticed that most of them headed off between two buildings. So I figured if ... read more

November 7 – Caen – Sword Beach – I got up early and tried to line up a hotel room using my computer but ran into some problems because some of the hotels wouldn’t let me use my Visa Debit to book a room, they wanted a regular credit card. So I used the book on Caen I had gotten from the tourist bureau and wrote down the hotel names, street addresses etc., while determining to do it the old fashioned way and walk over to the hotels to check them out. As I was checking out of the La Fontaine I asked them if they could recommend a hotel nearby. They said they knew of one and could call them for me. I said that was great since I didn’t know enough French to call ... read more

November 6 – Crossing the channel and arriving in France – I embarked from Portsmouth last night at 22:45 onto the good ship Normandie of the Brittany Lines. I was surprised with the size of the ship, it was huge. I had thought that luggage weight would be a problem but they not only didn’t weigh or look at our luggage but our luggage was out affair. In other words the passenger totally deals with it. If you can‘t carry it don’t bring it! In order to book a ticket I had to reserve a seat but when I got to it most of us had been stuck in a corner of a side room. After seeing how many empty seats there were I wandered around a bit and found some seats up directly in the ... read more

November 05 – Portsmouth – Preparing to cross the Channel – I’m downstairs in the dining area drinking my tea and thinking things over. My bag is packed upstairs in the room and my computer bag is fully packed down here. I have gotten down to one suitcase and one computer case. I left a bunch of stuff at the hostel in Weymouth with the manager and have sorted through things again here and discarded some more. The hardest thing for me to leave was a baking potato I had. It was a nice one but I decided that going into France they might ask if I had any vegetables with me and I didn’t want to open my bag to show him “the potato”. I have called the cab company and ordered a cab for ... read more

November 4 – Weymouth to Portsmouth – I got up early this morning and am doing some homework on hotels in Caen. I haven’t found any hostels there so I may have to rent a hotel room. I found a couple at around $50 a night so I will check them out. I booked a room for Tuesday night at the Hotel La Fontaine but that was the only night the hotel had a room available so I guess my most important task for the first day will be to root around for another place to stay for the rest of the time. I found another near the train station for around $50 a night that I will have a look at when I get to Caen. I will probably use Caen for my home base ... read more

November 3 – Weymouth – Preparing to depart – I have booked a room at the Hotel de la Fontaine in Caen for Tuesday the 6. I am heading to Portsmouth tomorrow morning and will stay there tomorrow night and depart on Brittany Ferries at 22:45 Monday night ariving at 06:45 Tuesday morning. So I will be taking pretty much the same route and time as the English D-Day participants. I have enjoyed my time visiting Weymouth and it was a detour well worth taking. I’ve been trying to find out things on the internet about Caen but keep running up against the language barrier. So it appears that exploring France will be a thornier undertaking than I had first imagined. Oh well….to paraphrase Mark Twain…Go through life armed with confidence and ignorance….and success is assured.........And ... read more

November 2 – Weymouth – day 5 – Today doing homework on the Tank Museum in Bovington – Dorset. The museum is only a 1 ¾ walk from the wool train station. I’ll probably head over to the station here in Weymouth and get a return ticket from Wool to Weymouth. It looks cold outside but I see blue sky so it should be all right. It looks like the wind has died down a bit from Yesterday. http://www.tankmuseum.org/ - tank museum – 2 1/2 miles walk from Wool train station. I took a cab for £6 each way. Evening – I bought a return ticket to Wool from Weymouth. It was a pleasant train trip. The weather was beautiful but a tad cool for a Texan. When I got to Wool there were a couple ... read more

November 1 - Portland Heights– Today was cold but with a clear blue sky. I walked over to the Esplanade in Weymouth and walked over to the Greenhill Gardens. There were a few flowers blooming but most of the flower beds were prepared and waiting for spring to return. The view of the Ocean was quite beautiful and I checked it out from time to time but it was a bit brisk for sitting and enjoying the view. After touring the Greenhill Gardens I walked down the Esplanade to the Jubilee Clock and ate at the King Edwards Fish and Chips…I had fish and chips again of course….with tea. From the fish and chips restaurant I walked down King Street towards the train station and I caught the #1 bus at the bus stop on Commercial ... read more

October 31 – Weymouth Day 2 – Morning - I’m downstairs at the dining room table/my office doing homework on bus lines in Weymouth and ferries. I am wearing a sweater over my shirt and thinking that maybe I should go up the stairs and get my jacket as well. They don’t seem to believe in using the heat here unless it “gets cold”, ………for an Englishman. I guess I will find out what that is when it gets cold enough. It is supposed to be cold and rainy today so if I do any touring it will be riding buses. I guess I will walk over to the bus terminal and see if they have a day pass or something. The manager came in around 0900 and asked if I had noticed that the heat ... read more

October 30 – Weymouth – Tuesday – I had a pretty good day today. The sun came out and it was a nice day. Cold at about 50 but the sun was shining so it wasn’t bad. I started walking down the Esplanade from about the pier bandstand to the Weymouth Pavilion and tower. I figured I would walk down the Esplanade to the North Gardens and walk in them. I walked a bit, then sat on a bench and enjoyed the view. Then I walked a bit and then stopped to enjoy the view again. The view was really a nice one to enjoy, Crescent shaped, it had a town in the distance on the left, then green fields, then chalk cliffs with boats about, then the opening to the sea. Then there was the ... read more
