Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Atlantis February 23rd 2016

Geo: 17.1207, -61.8451We dock in the colonial town of St Johns, Antigua just before 7am. Adventure of the Seas follows us in and moors alongside us and P&O Britannia which was already here before either of us. We breakfast in the main dining room with a view out over the town. We have been here once before back in 2005 when we spent a week in Antigua. Our hotel was situated in the south east corner of the island but we took a day trip to St Johns one day. Ironically there were cruise ships in port that day and Serenade was one of them. Having seen most of the island on our previous visit we decide to just venture into St Johns today to do some sightseeing and shopping. As we don't have a tour to ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Atlantis February 22nd 2016

Geo: 13.8941, -60.9686Our plan was to rise earlier than normal this morning so that we can see the Pitons that are located near the southerly tip of St Lucia. These iconic twin mountains are the subject of many a holiday snap and as we are heading to Rodney Bay which is the north of the island we fear we might not see them. Alas, even though we went to bed early the ship is docked in Castries by the time we get up.Slightly earlier tour time today and so we shower early and head to the Windjammer. I have cheesy scrambled eggs..a first. As usual we are early for our 8.15am meet time. It's almost impossible and unheard of for either of us to be late for anything. Peter and Patrick. P&P. Central America Caribbean » Barbados February 21st 2016

Geo: 13.1597, -59.5514Barbados is one of those destinations that conjures all sorts of exotic images. It is a favoured winter holiday destination for many British holidaymakers seeking to escape the sharp bite of winters back home. We sail into the port at Bridgetown a little after 7am and dock alongside a sleek expensive looking private yacht called Ice. Apparently it was owned by a Russian billionaire and won super yacht of the year 2006. I can certainly see why.We have a fairly early tour booked and so we are up and breakfasting by 7am. Our tour starts at 8.30 and so after eating we head out of the ship. There is a shuttle bus to carry people to the cruise terminal but as we have time we decide to walk the short distance along the harbour ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Grenada » Saint George February 20th 2016

Geo: 12.0648, -61.7445After a comfortable nights sailing we arise with Serenade still some distance from Grenada. Peter fetches coffees which we enjoy on the balcony in the early morning warmth. As we have an aft balcony cabin we are shielded somewhat from the easterly winds that the ship has experienced ever since we arrived in Aruba a few days ago. Breakfast is a leisurely affair in the main dining room. We dock at around 1pm today and our tour is scheduled for 1.45pm. We head back to the cabin to change and apply the all important sun screen. We pose for the obligatory photos as we leave the ship and we head to the rendezvous point for the tour. Our tour is called Sunshine and Spices. We are met by our guide called Terry and board ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London February 19th 2016

Geo: 12.1508, -68.2787We arrived in Bonaire under the cover of darkness. From our balcony I can see that we are moored in the small harbour of the main town, Kralendijk. Pronounced kral-en-dake. Small boats bob gently upon the clear Caribbean waters, Frigate birds ride the gentle winds that blow across us and over to Klein Bonaire, a small uninhabited island that sits a small boat ride away to the west.We are only here from 7am to 2pm today and already people are leaving the ship to explore the island and the marine life that inhabit its surrounding waters. Although I enjoy snorkelling I would need a specialised mask because of my eyesight, or at least a pair I could wear over my glasses. As I don't we opt for an exploration of Kralendijk itself. We breakfast ... read more

Geo: 12.53, -70.03Serenade has docked in Aruba before we awake. We are in a position near the container dock which we thought was going to be some distance from the main terminal building but we can see that it would only be a 5/10 minute walk at most. Carnival Breeze is approaching the dock at a slow rate of knots. She passes us on our starboard side and docks in between us and Serenade's sister ship, Jewel of the Seas.We breakfast in the WJ and manage to find a couple of seats outside at the back of the ship. True to its reputation Aruba is windy just as it was when we were here last year. Back in our stateroom we shower and change and remember to put sunscreen on before heading down to deck 2 ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba February 16th 2016

Geo: 20.89, -76.25Dawn breaks as Serenade sails toward Aruba. Our position is just north of Cuba as we adjust course to sail along her northern coastline. We are close to Cayo Coco where we spent 2 weeks back in 2008. We can't see the pristine white sand beaches or the azure waters that lap the shore but we have very fond memories of our time in Cuba.We slept in till just after 6am today so our body clocks are getting back in sync. We have coffee on the balcony as the sun rises and it glints of the white foam churned up by Serenades powerful azipod propellors. There are a couple of other ships in our vicinity, all tankers, but they fall behind Serenades sleek speed. We breakfast in the main dining room. Eggs Benedict of course ... read more

Geo: 26.1228, -80.1505I am awake before sunrise again. Peter too. Takes a few sleeps before we are in sync with the rhythm of the days. Today we board Serenade of the Seas. It will be a relief to be able to unpack fully at last and after our last cruise a relief to have something to unpack at all.We breakfast at Denny's before returning to the hotel and making sure we have everything together and load the car up. We leave around 10am for the hour or so drive south to Fort Lauderdale. Peter is treated to a variety of my Spotify playlists. I like to introduce him to new artists and sounds...whether he likes it or not. His playlists, when he does them, are very different to mine.I95 is pretty busy as we head south. ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » West Palm Beach February 14th 2016

Geo: 26.7144, -80.0527We sleep well but as usual our body clocks are out of whack and so we are both wide awake by 4am. We manage to snooze for another hour before getting up and making coffee. Weather forecast for today is going to be a very nice 21c (72f) which although not particularly warm for Florida for us it's practically a heatwave. We drive to Denny's for our traditional breakfasts when we are in the US. Grand Slam Slugger for Peter. Moons over My Hammy for me. Shortly after that we decide to drive eastward toward the coast and Palm Beach itself. We park up and walk half a mile or so along the coast and find ourselves at the top of Worth Avenue. Worth Avenue is very similar to Rodeo Drive in LA. Full ... read more

Geo: 53.4807, -2.23451Bird song. The dawn chorus. I glimpse at the chink in the curtains to see any sign that morning had broken thinking it must be imminent given the full throttled chirping I was hearing. I check my watch. 3.15 am. Damned insomniac bird. Little avian upstart, I spend the next hour trying to return to sleep, not by counting sheep but thinking of as many bird related insults I can come up with. Peter's accompanying snore means I am unsuccessful. At 5.30 we are both awake and so we brew coffee for our first caffeine hit. Our flight to Atlanta is not till 10.20 and so we don't need to rush off. We enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before showering and loading the car with our bags.
