Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Atlantis April 22nd 2014

Geo: 22.4682, -72.1078“...inside every older person is a young person wondering what happened.” Terry Pratchett.April 22nd 2014. The first day of my 6th decade on this planet. Where better to spend that day than onboard a cruise ship heading towards the Caribbean. Breakfast on the balcony. Eggs Benedict it is. Soft yolk, creamy sauce, salty ham, crisp muffin. Perfection on a plate, eaten with ravenous gusto. Sun kissed orange juice to follow. A great start to the day.I had already decided that today would be a lazy day. Fearful of my decrepit ageing overnight I was scared of doing anything remotely energetic that might compromise my now extremely brittle bones. And so I spend a better part of the morning gazing out at the ocean as we drift southwards towards Puerto Rico. I catch up reading ... read more

Geo: 25.0829, -77.3338Deep sleep. I always seem to sleep really well on ships. Must be something to do with the motion of the ocean even though I cant really feel any movement at all. We are scheduled to arrive in Nassau in the Bahamas around 8.00 today. We have an excursion booked to The Blue Lagoon today so we have to be up an out as need to meet on the pier at 8.30. We have breakfast in the Windjammer before throwing some beach towels, iPods and cameras into a bag and heading down to deck 2 to disembark. We are met by our tour guide and walk a short distance to a small boat that will take us on the 45 minute journey to Salt Cay Island (it's official name) and The Blue Lagoon. We pass ... read more

Geo: 25.729, -80.2374Morning always dawns early the day after an TA flight. More so for Peter it seems as he is up and out of bed at 3.30am. Even though I am wide awake I refuse to get up and roll over until sleep returns. I finally awake around 6.30. Peter has also returned to bed at some point. We are both up to watch the sunrise. Cruise ships are already moored at Miami Port. Our ship Adventure of the Seas I am reliably informed arrived around 4.30 this morning. We have breakfast in the club room at the hotel before we decide to take an early morning walk. the weather is glorious. there are plenty of joggers and cyclists about. we stroll through Bayside Park and end up at a CVS chemist where Peter buys a ... read more

Geo: 25.7488, -80.1951'It is good to have an end to journey toward. But it is the journey that matters in the end'.Ernest Hemingway. And so it begins. I love the excitement at the start of any journey. I often catch myself thinking that in so many weeks I will have returned home and the holiday/vacation will all be over and life will have resumed its normal cadence. I think a lot of us make the mistake of thinking those days don't count, that they are in some way, lesser days, simply for being mundane. Early alarms calls, dark mornings, endless traffic, late buses, rainy skies. The point I make is that life shouldn't be measured by just the good days. It's full of many diffrent types of days, each as important as the one before or after. ... read more

Geo: 53.4807, -2.23451We awake early. All the bags are packed and all that remains is to make sure that the villa is spick and span for when the owners arrive later that morning. We nip to Denny's for our final breakfast of this trip. Peter has his usual 'Grand Slam Slugger' and I have my favourite 'Moons over My Hammy' and return to the villa to gather the last of our things before heading out. We do not need to be at Sanford Airport until at least 2pm and so we decide to do some last minute shopping instead. We head up I-4 to the Mall at Millennia which we class as a 'posh' mall as it has a Tiffany store. Peter had been rather jealous of my Ray Bans that I purchased earlier in the week ... read more

Geo: 28.4743, -81.4659Found it hard to wake is morning. Too much sleep perhaps? Nothing that a nice cup of coffee could not sort out. Bright sunshine this morning although like yesterday some stormy weather forecast for later in the day. We are soon out the door for breakfast and then on our way to Universal Studios for the day. We decide to take the preferred parking which means you don't have to walk so far from the car to the theme park. Not sure it was worth the upgrade as it was a fair old walk from King Kong 310 to the park entrance. Once inside we head to Islands of Adventure first and the Amazing Spider-Man ride which has now been upgraded into HD. You can really tell e difference and it's a fun ride. ... read more

Geo: 28.4094, -81.4621First full day in Orlando today. Good nights sleep last night. We awake to a slightly overcast sky and the local weather channel predicts some heavy rain & thunderstorms from around lunchtime. In view of this we slightly curtail our plans and decide to head to Seaworld and then go to the movies this afternoon. If it's raining outside I'd rather be inside. We head to Seaworld, via Denny's, where the skies are blue and the temperatures are soaring. Could the weatherman have got it wrong? We stroll around the park visiting the Dolphins, Sealions, Manatees, Turtles and other assorted marine life. We venture onto the giant roller-coaster Kraken and the water ride Journey to Atlantis. We head to the Dolphin Theatre for the dolphin show Blue Horizons. We leave the park and grab some ... read more

Geo: 28.3467, -81.4801After a restless night I awoke when it was still dark at about 4am. I peeked through the cabin curtains and I could see the unmistakable orange glow of civilisation in the distance, a sure sign we were close to Fort Lauderdale. I drifted back to an uneasy sleep and awoke a few hours later and Allure had docked. We quickly showered and headed down to breakfast for the last time in the main dining room. The elevators we already full of people ready to disembark and they soon started calling out the numbers for people to leave the ship. We returned to our cabin and did the last minute check to make sure we had left nothing behind. We then proceeded to Deck 5 and left Allure and all its wonders behind.Baggage collection ... read more

Geo: 26.1228, -80.1505I awake feeling refreshed and ready for another day at sea. Peter fetches the customary early morning coffee. I have no idea where he gets it from...it just appears, and I am grateful. We have breakfast at Johnny Rockets again as we enjoyed it yesterday. We then gather our things and head to the pool deck. After what looks like some early morning showers the sky is clear and the sun is beating down as people arrive up top to claim their sunbeds. We get 2 near one of the bars where there is a cool breeze blowing. I listen to some music on my iPod and Peter does the same. Mine is Movie Soundtracks (the works of Michael Nyman being a particular fave). I would put my bottom dollar that Peter is listening to ... read more

Geo: 25.0533, -77.3273Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. I awake at 4.30am parched and dehydrated. Not sure how that happened. Could it have been that second bottle of wine last night? Most likely. My soda cup for once is empty and I only manage a couple of drops of fluid before knocking it over and waking Peter.I am fully awake a few hours later and feel better after the first cup of coffee that Peter has retrieved from Cafe Promenade. It's hot outside on the balcony as the starboard side of the ship is now facing east in the mornings.Breakfast this morning is at Johnny Rockets for a change. Allure and Oasis are the only 2 ships where Johnny Rockets serve breakfast as it is normally just lunch there. I have a lovely ... read more
