cockles
Love your cockle recipe. Made me think of Goolwa. This looks like a beautiful spot. You certainly seem to have taken to the Blonde Nomad Lifestyle Joan. Beautiful photos.

not a moment lost
You sure packed this trip full of highlights. I have been quietly following and enjoying it vicariously. Thanks for the wedding photos they were great. I imagine you will arrive home tired little teddy bears.

another one we've been to!
Loved the Fushimi-Inari temple. We didn't make it all the way up the mountain, either. Took tons of photos, though.. I think there's one on our Christmas card (need to get those in the mail soon...). Cheers!

the food ticket machines
Those food machines are interesting! Not a problem for non-picky eaters. I had to bring the cashier over and point at the simplest-looking one and try to indicate that they should leave the green onion garnish off :-). We got it sorted, boys were happy.

Food ticket machines
Most of the time if we were looking in trouble somebody would come over and help us out. Generally people were very helpful. We only had difficulties with a machine that did not have any pictures or English titles. When no assistance was offered we just moved on.

Fun to see some repeats of where we went... the bamboo forest, the castle. Not sure if your Zen garden is one of the 2 we went to (Ryoanji and Nanzenji). We didn't make it to the monkey place as the kids were tired and didn't want to walk up the hill, but we did go on that bridge. And I think you are getting more upscale food than we did... with 3 kids we went cheap and kid-friendly so lots of udon and takeout from the 7-11s, not so much with the nicer restaurants. I want to go back in the fall some year... or spring when the trees are blossoming...

Dining in Japan
We have been avoiding the upmarket restaurants and the pseudo western food. Our best food finds have not been in the big food halls, but rather the back streets. We do however mostly restrict ourselves to places with food models or a menu in 'engrish'. The times we have ventured into places without models or pictures have all worked our successfully. We have however been beaten by one food ordering machine and as a result moved on to another choice. Normally the staff is really eager to help, so it works out.

keep it up :-)
Still enjoying all of your trip posts. Funny that we were in the same town (Hiroshima) just 4 months ago.

Birthday call
It was kind of cool to get a birthday call from Tristan who was at work in the Dauna mine while I was in the grounds of a temple in Osaka.

nice photos, looks fun!
We had looked at going to Hakone when we booked our trip but ended up going elsewhere. Looks gorgeous, esp. in autumn, and maybe we will make it back to Japan someday. Have fun!

Yes, Harkone is great.
We are loving Harkone. It is a Japanese holiday area, the people are very friendly, the food is amazing and there is heaps to see and do. Visiting an area like this for a while is a great way to aclimatise to Japan. We are now ordering the traditional breakfast by choice.

Death Rock
Well we suppose that could be true. We didn't get close enough to find out ... obviously. Wonder if someone did, hence the name.

Hope you ripped that wandering pear out! It's really nice, as always, following you on this trip, I trust the kitchen reno is doing its thing while you are away and you don't return to a kitchen not quite as planned
