I spent four fantastic days in Bagan Lara Croft-ing (i.e., exploring temples. Lots of them). But, before I talk about these temples, let me tell you about two unexpected things I did: 1. I stayed in a hostel and I loved it. 2. I rented an e-bike. Hosteling? Me? Ahmar, the UCLA MBA alumnus I had been put in touch with, told me he had booked at Ostello Bello Hostel in Bagan, and that it came highly recommended. When I set out in this trip, I had resolved to not stay in dorms because I am a light sleeper and I was wary about sharing rooms with partying twentysomethings. My past experiences with hostels over 20 years ago weren't too favorable - they were primarily crash pads for people who stumbled in at all hours. At ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon September 5th 2017

When I left off on my last entry, I was feeling fatigued and unsure if I could sustain this travel. After Australia, I went to Singapore for four days. Family, friends, and food helped lift my spirits. A painful but much needed massage helped relax my weary muscles and joints. And, I had an unexpected boost to my post-travel job prospects. With all this happening, I got my spring back and I felt ready to tackle Myanmar! First Impressions of Yangon I landed in Yangon mid-afternoon on Monday September 4th. After stepping into an airport taxi, I realized something didn't feel right. It took me about ten minutes before I figured out what was wrong: almost all the steering wheels I saw were on the right... and the cars drive on the right. I asked the ... read more

I've never been to Sydney, believe it or not. Since I was flying into and out of Sydney on my Thai Airways mileage award ticket, I decided to stay for a day and a half to get a feel for this place. I didn't come to Sydney with a checklist of things to see and do. As some of you may know, I relate best to a place when I am at street level exploring, seeing, observing, hearing, and even smelling, and that was pretty much what I ended up doing. Walking From Bondi to Coogee The highlight of my trip was my walk along the coastline from Bondi to Coogee. After breakfast on my one full day in Sydney, I boarded a bus from Hyde Park towards Bondi. The ride took about 40 minutes, at ... read more

"Why Adelaide?" I keep getting asked. Well, I have a close friend who settled in Adelaide, and more recently another friend moved there as well, so I went there spend time with them, immerse myself in the place, and eat good food. I arrived in Adelaide on Tuesday, August 22, and stayed six days with my former co-worker Trixie and her husband Charles. I also spent time with my friend Ryan who moved there a few years ago. This was my third visit in eight years to Adelaide, so I wasn't there to see things so much as to just be there. During my time there, I ate myself silly, and went on lots of walks and hikes. Here are some of the things I did and saw. River Torrens Linear Park I did this hike ... read more

A few years ago, I learned about a field in the eastern side of Bangkok where several aircraft had been abandoned. I immediately knew I had to experience this myself. When planning this flashpacking trip, I blinked in disbelief when I saw on united.com that I could fly Singapore-Bangkok-Sydney and return on Thai Airways for a paltry 70,000 miles, with BKK-SYD in First Class and the rest of the sectors in Business Class. I booked this award ticket without hesitation and scheduled a ten hour layover so that I could seek out this aircraft graveyard. The Journey to the Aircraft Graveyard I arrived at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport at 9am. Since I was flying First Class on my next segment, I suspected there would be someone to meet me at arrival. Sure thing, there was an earnest ... read more

Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better. Every day, in every way, you're getting better and better. So chanted the yoga instructor during shivasana (the time when you lie down at the end of a yoga session) as she clanged on her Tibetan healing bowls. My thought bubble pops: "Oh my god. I'm turning into an Eat, Pray, Love cliche. And I don't even like EPL. Jeff is going to have a field day when I tell him about this. Oh, what the heck. Ommmmmm....." The decision to go to Bali wasn't as quite easy as I made it out to be in the closing paragraphs of my last entry from Flores. I had to ask myself a few questions. Am I retreating to the familiar? Was Bali too easy, and ... read more

This entry records my day trip to the east of Bali to visit Pura Lempuyang and Tirta Ganga. All my other activities in Bali were around Ubud, and these will be published later in a separate entry. Pura Lempuyang I recently learned about a particularly picturesque temple in East Bali. After viewing the photos online, I immediately knew I wanted to experience it for myself. The temple is called Pura Lempuyang, and it is one of the holiest sites in Bali. Incredibly, despite its Instagram-worthy clickbait credentials, it doesn't attract many tourists. Today was my splurge day. Because of its distance from Ubud, I knew I had to fork out some dough to hire a car and driver to take me there. I've been trying to keep my expenses to below $50 per day while I ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Flores » Maumere August 8th 2017

I did it. I traversed Flores west to east (well, at least until Maumere) without hiring a personal car and driver. That would have cost upwards of US$50 per day. The majority of the travelers I met hired a car and driver. Excluding time spent at the two ends of the journey, the overland journey itself took five days; total distance traveled over the crazy, winding, up and down roads was probably over 350 miles. I took public buses, shared ride vans, bemo, and hitched rides from fellow travelers. Except for the two days getting to Moni and staying in Moni, the entire journey was smooth and very pleasurable. Flores is heart achingly beautiful. The people, other than those I encountered in Moni, are just wonderful. Many people have helped me without asking for anything in ... read more

So, My Lucky Streak Ended... I left off my last entry with a sense of foreboding that my streak of positive travel experiences was about to end. Well, it did. As you may recall, I decided to plan out the remainder of my time in Flores after hearing negative stories about accommodation from westbound travelers. My intended next stop from Bajawa was Moni, where I had planned to stay two nights - the plan was arrive and stay the night, to go to Keli Mutu for sunrise, hike back down, and stay another night. After that, I had booked a beach resort in Maumere as a special treat to myself after staying in budget places and traveling rough(ish). I also booked a ticket out of Maumere to Bali on August 9. I was wary about planning ... read more

Adjusting My Travel Philosophy I flew in to Flores island on a one-way ticket and only my first two nights' accommodation reserved. I didn't want to overplan my travel. My plan was to wing it and enjoy the journey as it unfolded. I have traveled in Indonesia in this manner before and never had a problem. Maybe I was lulled into a false sense of security. Up until now, everything has fallen into place beautifully. I shared a car to Ruteng when my transportation fell through. When I snagged a room at the convent in Ruteng at the last minute, the staff at the hotel in Labuanbajo couldn't believe their ears. When I realized that I would arrive in Bajawa (where I am now) after dark, I enlisted the help of other people and managed to ... read more
