Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island July 28th 2011

For my trip to Singapore in 2011, I used AA AAdvantage miles to redeem a Business Class ticket to Singapore on Cathay Pacific. This itinerary had me transiting through Hong Kong twice - the first one was an early morning 5am through 10am transit and the second was an evening 5pm through 11pm layover. First Transit - July 12th, 2011 I arrived into a very quiet Hong Kong airport at 5am after a 16-hour flight from JFK. After clearing immigration, I waited for the first train into the city departing 6am. The train ride into central took about 20mins and I wandered into a city that was barely awake. I've always been a fan of HK's skyline, so I headed out on the covered walkway towards the star Ferry terminal. The Star Ferry was operating, and ... read more

Prologue My 2011 visit to my parents' home in Singapore was a bittersweet one. My parents had sold my childhood home and I went to pack up as much stuff from my first 24 years as I could fit into two suitcases. I supported their choice to downsize. The downside, however, was that my childhood home, which was an actual house built on freehold (fee simple) land - a rarity in land scarce Singapore - would be torn down by the new owners who would most likely build a soulless custom McMansion on the plot. Not only did I have to say goodbye to a structure that housed so many memories, I also had to figure out what to keep and what to toss. Even though I am relatively unsentimental about my past, in hindsight I ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cali April 24th 2011

What did I know about Cali? Not much apart from its reputation for drug-related violence. So, when we were invited to Cali for Jeff's former coworker's wedding, we scratched our heads a little, and thought why not, and then booked a short weekend trip thinking: (a) there isn't much to see/do; and (b) it probably wasn't safe anyway. And so this is how I touched foot on my fifth continent. In 2011, I was splitting my time between my homes in the Washington DC Metro Area and Honolulu, and so I booked a ticket for Honolulu-Washington-Cali-Honolulu. Interestingly, two sectors (Cali-Miami and Miami-LAX) were booked in Business and First Class respectively even though I paid an economy class fare. Leaving my Washington home on a pleasant Good Friday morning, we first took a flight to Miami where ... read more

After our weeklong vacation in Japan, we flew back to Los Angeles and stayed a few days with Jeff's parents before heading back to Honolulu. My one-way flight from Burbank to Honolulu had me transiting in Seattle, so I took the opportunity to meet up with a friend during the layover. Highlights of Seattle included Pike's Place, fresh seafood for lunch and wandering around the Space Needle. At Pike's Place, I made a pilgrimage to the very first Starbucks, chatted with a guy who had a stand with several cats (he wasn't quite clear what the purpose of his stand was, but we did chat about Cat Cafes in Japan as I had just come from one in Tokyo), saw workers tossing salmon to one another at the seafood stand, and saw the chewing gum wall. ... read more

This post documents our two-day side trip during our week long trip to Tokyo in the summer of 2010. Part 1 of this series describes the highlights of our sojourn in Tokyo while Part 2 describes our climb of Mt Fuji. Prior to our arrival in Japan, I had booked a room at the excellent Moto-Hakone Guest House, and I also bought the Hakone Free Pass for JPY5500 on arrival at Narita. Both turned out to the excellent purchases; the guest house was friendly, homely and great value for money, and the Pass allowed unlimited rides within the Hakone area plus one return trip between Shinjuku and the Hakone area. Leaving Shinjuku around noon on Thursday, we took the local train to the town of Odawara. From there, we took a ... read more

Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » Mt Fuji July 7th 2010

This is the second of a three-part series on our Japan adventure. Part 1 is dedicated to highlights of our time in Tokyo and Part 3 describes our two-day trip to Hakone. After our first full day of sightseeing in Tokyo we had a satisfying dinner at a Thai restaurant. Jeff is vegetarian, and unfortunately we had problems communicating this in Japanese restaurants so far on our trip, so we went to a Thai restaurant where I could order vegetarian food in Thai for him. With our bellies full, we went to the bus station next to Shinjuku Station and got onto a bus headed to Mt Fuji's fifth station. There are a total of nine stations on the trails leading up to the summit of Mt Fuji. Most hikers take a bus to the fifth ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo July 5th 2010

In the summer of 2010, we took the opportunity to make our first international trip together while our foster son was at camp. This trip was also an early 10th anniversary celebration for us. This is the first of a three part series on our week long trip to the Tokyo area in the summer of 2010. During the week, we took two trips outside Tokyo: One to climb Mount Fuji (described in Part 2) and one to Hakone (Part 3). Instead of telling our story in chronological order, this entry - and the photos - are organized by theme. Cultural Highlight 1: Ghibli Museum There was one sightseeing item we were 100% in agreement with: The Ghibli Museum showcasing the work of acclaimed anime director's Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli. Before we left for Tokyo,... read more

Oceania » Micronesia » Pohnpei July 23rd 2003

This is the first of a select number of past travels I plan to write about. Details may be a little fuzzy because I made this trip almost ten years ago. Background In July 2003, a client of mine - a highly-respected not-for-profit organization serving communities in the Compact of Free Association- asked if I would travel to Pohnpei, capital of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), to make a presentation to their board. Micronesia? All expenses paid trip to a remote Pacific Island most people have never heard of? Hell yes! To top that, I get to tick off one more item on my bucket list: flying on Continental Micronesia's (now part of United) legendary Island Hopper service. This flight is legendary among airline geeks. It operates between Honolulu and Guam with five (yes, you ... read more
