Prologue Prior to December 2012, I was self-employed which meant that I had more time on my hands and usually more money as well, so I qualified easily for status with American Airlines. Earlier this year, I realized that I was not on course to requalify for status. Around that same time, American sent me a 15% off coupon so I decided to make a mileage run. The next decision was – where should I go? I knew I wanted to explore a new place. I was tempted to go to New Orleans, but I found a cheaper fare to San Juan. A quick scan through the Lonely Planet led me to Posada San Francisco, a hostel offering private rooms for $30 in the heart of Old San Juan. With that, the deal was sealed. Saturday, ... read more

Hawaii Route 200, locally known as the Saddle Road, is the shortest route between Hawaii Island's two main population centers of Hilo and Kona. Until recently, most car rental companies forbade renters to drive their cars on the Saddle Road because it was poorly maintained and considered one of the most dangerous roads in the US. In the last decade, however, the road has been upgraded section by section, reducing travel time between Hilo and Kona from well over two hours to about 1.5 hours today. On October 15th, I was scheduled to conduct one meeting on the Hilo side of Hawaii Island and another on the Kona side. After consulting my Hilo-based coworker, K., we decided that I would fly in to Hilo, and that we would drive the Saddle Road together to Kona. The ... read more

Prologue I lived in Bangkok in 1994 and 1995 in the days before the metro and skytrain and before Suvarnabhumi Airport. At that time, roads were almost always gridlocked and it took a long time to travel even a short distance. I remember it once took me over two hours to drive 5 miles to work. The city was crowded, noisy and polluted, but it was also endlessly fascinating. One of my favorite memories was looking into my rearview mirror and seeing an elephant behind me! When I booked our award tickets for our vacation to Bali, I could only get us back home from Bangkok, so we decided to spend two days there. We opted to spend one day in Ayuthaya (see our other blog entry) and the other day in Bangkok itself. Krung Thep, ... read more

Prologue I used miles for our flights on our vacation to Bali. With miles, I could get us to Bali, but we had to return from Bangkok, so we decided to spend two days in Bangkok. We spent one of these two days on a day trip out of Bangkok to the old capital of Ayuthaya, and the other day in Bangkok itself. Our Bangkok blog is here. Our Day in Ayuthaya Leaving our hotel early, we took the metro from Petchaburi station (where our hotel was located), to Hua Lamphong station. What a change from when I lived there.. seven subway stops and you complete in less than 20 minutes a journey that used to take up to two hours or more! Arriving at Hua Lamphong, we bought tickets for the next train to Ayuthaya ... read more

A Primer on Balinese Naming Conventions: In this entry, I make reference to three people named Made (pronounced "ma-deh"). A quick discussion of Balinese naming conventions may be in order first. Balinese names usually begin with "I" (for males) or "Ni" (for females), followed by Wayan, Made, Nyoman or Ketut to signify birth order, and then followed by their given name(s). Our guesthouse owner, I Wayan Karja, for example, is a man and he is the firstborn in his family. Prologue I first visited Bali 20 years ago when it was mainly a backpacker destination and long before Elizabeth Gilbert hit that midlife crisis that led her to write Eat Pray Love. I planned on staying only a day or two thinking it was a tourist trap. Arriving into Ubud late at night after a long ... read more

We're on vacation in Bali! To get here, I cashed in some miles for a Business Class ticket with an 11-hour layover in Tokyo arriving at Narita Airport at 1.30pm and departing from Haneda Airport at 12.30am. For this layover, the first decision we had to make was to choose a base convenient to both Narita and Haneda where we could store our bags. As much as I wanted to try the cheaper and faster Kaisei Skyliner to Ueno, the obvious option that best suited our needs was the Narita Express to Tokyo Station. Our next task was choose fun things to do that we did not do on our trip there three years prior (see this entry). Researching our options, we settled on Roppongi. Arriving in Narita on Monday afternoon, we made our way to ... read more

I did not intend to blog about this trip so please forgive the sketchy details. My reason for traveling to the Bay Area in March 2013 was not a happy one. In early March, I received news that a close friend from grad school had died suddenly. I made a last minute decision to go for his funeral in San Francisco. Fortunately, my cousin A. lives in the East Bay, and she and her partner T. graciously put me up. This was a good thing as far as I was concerned because they were there to listen and help me process the loss of my friend. The funeral was held on Friday March 8th and it was my saddest day in recent memory, but at least I got to say goodbye to M. and reconnect with ... read more

Some Background Info In 2010, my partner Jeff and I moved from Honolulu, HI to Silver Spring, MD for him to take up a job. Unfortunately, that job did not work out. To make matters worse, I had trouble finding a permanent job in the area and our foster son's behavior went downhill to such an extent that we asked him to leave our family (he was over 18 and technically no longer our foster child). After all that had happened, we asked ourselves: "Can we be happy if we stayed here?". The answer was no. With that, we decided to return to Hawaii. This blog entry chronicles our cross-country drive to Long Beach, CA from where we shipped our car to Hawaii. We planned this trip to last a week so that we could see ... read more

In July this year, I traveled to Singapore to visit family and friends. As I was using miles for my flights, I had the luxury of choosing some exotic routings utilizing United's excellent new award booking site that allows direct booking on partner airlines. The flights I chose were: Outbound: Washington Dulles to Bahrain (with stopver in Kuwait): United Business Class Bahrain - Doha: Qatar Airways Economy Class Doha - Kuala Lumpur: Qatar Airways Business Class Return: Kuala Lumpur - Doha: Qatar Airways Business Class Doha - Dubai: Qatar Airways Economy Class Dubai - Washington Dulles: United Business. Flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore were tickets purchased on low cost carriers Air Asia and Jetstar. As the return journey had an eight hour connection in Dubai, I decided that I would exit the airport and explore. ... read more

We visited Jeff's parents at their Palm Desert home over Christmas in 2011, and we spent a day at Joshua Tree National Park driving through this rather large national park. Starting out at Cottonwood, we then went to the Cholla Cactus Garden, Jumbo Rocks, Keys View and Hidden Valley before existing into the Yucca Valley and heading back to Palm Desert via the Morongo Valley. I've labeled the photos to the best of my recollection. Enjoy!... read more
