It all sounded good until...
...purple cola! I can't imagine how that would taste with cheesecake, chocolate and lemon sorbet... did it work? I suppose it's an ice cream spider (ice cream float) for grown-ups, but it still sounds weird :)

Seattle Snow Day
I always think of Frasier when I think of Seattle. Great to read about the attractions which the city has to offer - the Bonsai Museum in particular looks amazing! Glad the snow didn't seemingly cause many issues - we are just recovering from a week-long deep freeze, which has pretty much brought the country to a standstill! Sounds like you had a lovely time in Seattle :)

New Zealand contrast!
Wow, what a contrast between this and your other blog entries on this trip. Cold, stark and windswept landscapes seem a world away from tropical Southeast Asia! Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road was on my list. I can check it off now. My next great Aussie trip would probably to take the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide, but I'll reserve that for when I'm older.

Did you bring the rain with you?
I was thinking of you when Victoria and Tasmania got lashed with a whole summer's worth of rain in one day! Glad you escaped it by heading west. I like the sound of Robe, and will have to check it out when we are next in that part of the country. Did your Australian friends giggle when you said you were 'rooting' for the English team? Means something totally different in Aussie slang... (but then again your friends probably don't have a juvenile sense of humour like me) :)

Sending merit
I don't think I've ever come across a mailbox in a temple before, and I'm giggling at the concept of sending merit to "lovers" :) The way in which past histories of places contribute to/shape their modern-day identities is a fascinating subject. However, even when looking at a small island like Sri Lanka, the layers you mentioned are so thick and ingrained that they're sometimes hard to identify. And then there's also the complicating political and religious lens through which things are viewed. It's so fabulous that travel is such a good teacher! Sorry our dates in Melbs don't coincide with yours... looking forward to reading your take on my most favourite place in the world :)
