Japan Revisited
Oh wow, how good it is to read about more of your travels in Japan, much closer now to my own planned visit to the country. Tokyo looks an amazing city to experience. I remember your Robot Restaurant visit from last time! I look forward to reading about more of your travels in the country :)

I need...
...to visit one of these islands someday. I don't think I'll manage it on my next visit to Japan but on the one next year I should be able to do it. :)

Shinjuku

It all sounded good until...
...purple cola! I can't imagine how that would taste with cheesecake, chocolate and lemon sorbet... did it work? I suppose it's an ice cream spider (ice cream float) for grown-ups, but it still sounds weird :)

Seattle Snow Day
I always think of Frasier when I think of Seattle. Great to read about the attractions which the city has to offer - the Bonsai Museum in particular looks amazing! Glad the snow didn't seemingly cause many issues - we are just recovering from a week-long deep freeze, which has pretty much brought the country to a standstill! Sounds like you had a lovely time in Seattle :)

Thank you!
Thank you! I do hope to be able to visit Hawaii at some point :0)

Brrr...
But what gorgeous icicles! I remember reading about the people you met on the slow boat on the Mekong, how lovely that you got to catch up at home :)

I handle cold pretty well, actually....
... as long as my feet are dry, I'm happy! It was certainly quite a treat catching up with my Laos travel companions!

Amazing!
Amazing trip and photos! Hawaii looks really beautiful, and what an amazing experience to be able to see humpback whales so close! I do hope all sorts itself out for you on the next step in your career. All the best.

Come Visit!
The humpback whales are certainly a treat, and they are the most interesting whales to watch as they are pretty active.

Thank you! And a Happy New Year to you too :)

Thank you!
Thank you for allowing me to join you on this most epic of adventures, I'm sure a life-changing experience indeed. Your travels have been inspiring, and your writing very honest and heartfelt. I appreciate very much your sharing of your journey here, a journey in many different senses of the word. I wish you all the very best in your next chapter as it opens up for you. I look forward to reading about your future travels that you plan to do.

Stark but stunning...
Even though the weather was far from ideal hiking weather, I love your eerie misty photos. You've inspired me to look into trekking holidays in NZ. What an amazing multi-part trip you've experienced! I bet Jeff and the kitties are excited to have to back. I'd love to see some pics of the new kitties in your summary blog :)

Request Noted
There are kitties in my summary blog! This experience trekking in Aotearoa was a very positive one - the treks are well marked and logistics (transportation, etc.) are easy. So, go for it!

New Zealand contrast!
Wow, what a contrast between this and your other blog entries on this trip. Cold, stark and windswept landscapes seem a world away from tropical Southeast Asia! A very inspiring read again, thank you. I look forward very much to reading your summary entry, on what has really been an epic series of trips for you :)
5th January 2018

It was a whole different landscape for sure!
I'm now inspired to do more treks in Aotearoa, but maybe later when I have more $$ saved up. NZ is expensive!

Great Ocean Road
Really great photos of the Great Ocean Road, what stunning scenery! And I love the photo too of the wallaby in the bushes. I've enjoyed reading about your road trip from Melbourne to Adelaide :)
5th January 2018

Thanks!
The Great Ocean Road was on my list. I can check it off now. My next great Aussie trip would probably to take the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide, but I'll reserve that for when I'm older.

Did you bring the rain with you?
I was thinking of you when Victoria and Tasmania got lashed with a whole summer's worth of rain in one day! Glad you escaped it by heading west. I like the sound of Robe, and will have to check it out when we are next in that part of the country. Did your Australian friends giggle when you said you were 'rooting' for the English team? Means something totally different in Aussie slang... (but then again your friends probably don't have a juvenile sense of humour like me) :)

“Rooting”
I didn’t say “rooting” in my conversations with my friends. In any case, they’re nowhere as juvenile as you are :-)

Sending merit
I don't think I've ever come across a mailbox in a temple before, and I'm giggling at the concept of sending merit to "lovers" :) The way in which past histories of places contribute to/shape their modern-day identities is a fascinating subject. However, even when looking at a small island like Sri Lanka, the layers you mentioned are so thick and ingrained that they're sometimes hard to identify. And then there's also the complicating political and religious lens through which things are viewed. It's so fabulous that travel is such a good teacher! Sorry our dates in Melbs don't coincide with yours... looking forward to reading your take on my most favourite place in the world :)

The Layers of Influence
Since you are as food crazed as I am, I recommend reading Curry: A Tale of Cooks and Conquerors. It is a fascinating read that traces the influences in Indian cuisine.
