Wow what a day! Now we are really getting the feel of South Africa. Not only is this country breath takingly beautiful (I don't think any photographs can do it justice - you just have to come and visit and see it for yourselves) but the wildlife is just amazing. We started the day in an elephant sancturay where we learned all about these rather impressive creatures, before walking with them - trunk in hand - into the forest where we learned some more and interacted with these suprisingly gentle animal. After walking back we fed them before saying our goodbyes. After a coffee and cake we continued to monkey land where I was rather tempted to sneak one of the baby monkeys into my bag to take home. But living with one cheeky monkey is ... read more

After we left the winelands two days ago we spent the day on a long drive and ended up in Mossel Bay. A bit industrial but the bay was pretty and the guesthouse lovely. We had an unusually bad meal of Sushi but after the over indulgence of the previous two days it was not a bad thing that we didn't finish our meal. The next day we set off early and drove to Oudtshoon. We didn't have a lot of time - just enough to visit an Ostrich farm and take lots of pictures. We carried out to George where we visited the transport museum which was good fun actually. We then went to Knysna which is really pretty where we stopped for lunch. We should have stayed here rather than Mossel Bay... We finally ... read more

If you have never been on Safari before - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??? This was simply one of the best experiences of my life! (if you discount one tearful break down following an unpleasant argument with a spider...) We left Plettenberg in the morning and drove east. We stopped in Jeffreys Bay and Surfer's paradise for some photos and ice cream. We arrived at Lalibela around lunch time and were greeted by Craig who was our ranger for the next 48 hours. Craig is a young African with a wicked sense of humour and an endless amount of knowledge about animals and birds. Safari would not have been the same without him. To our relief a party of 11 Chinese tourists who arrived at the same time as us decided they didn't want to stay ... read more

Today in the UK may well be Christmas Day, but here in South Africa for the Engel clan December 25th 2011 is Food Glorious Food day! We didn't bother with breakfast today as we knew what was to come! A glass of orange juice and and apple got us through the morning before we headed to La Petite Ferme - set deep in the valleys of Franschhoek with views that have to be seen to be believed. A jazz musician walked around the gardens playing the saxophone while we sat on the veranda tucking into our 5 course meal. You can see from the photos that great fun was had by all. Although this time we didn't pick the wine pairing we were greeted with a glass of Cap Classique and tried some of the restaurants ... read more

A short drive from Cape Town you will find the lush wineland spread over thousands of kilometers with green valleys amongst the moutains dotted with vine yards and wine farms - each more pretty than the last. We visited the town of Stellenbosch and in particular the Spier wine estate (another Auntie B reccomendation). We started off with a wine tasting session (this is not yet midday and we have barely had a piece of toast for breakfast - *hic*). The wines were ok but not really our taste (which really is saying something as Mark and I have completely different taste in wine and we couldn't find one that either of us liked). We then continued into Moyo - The Spier's own African adventure restaurant. Our table was up in a tree and the food ... read more

We got up early today in the hope of climbing up table moutain as yesterday was too windy so the cable car was closed. Unfortunately the moutain was covered in clouds despite the rest of Cape Town basking in sunshine. The locals have nicked name this phenomena where the clouds hog the top of the mountain as the 'table cloth'. Instead we decided to follow the recommendations of some friends and visit some local hidden treasures. We drove down the coast towards Muizenberg. This was once the place for the rich and famous and now a town full of victorian buildings and golden beaches which attracts surfers. We continued on to Fish Hoek - another village further down the coast. It was quaint, with similarly sandy beaches. It reminded me of Swanage on the South Coast ... read more

An early start as we had to catch the boat to Robben Island (Prison where Nelson Mandela - amongst others - were kept for over 18 years). The weather matched the mood of the prison - dreary, grey, windy and there was even rain. Not the sort of day one might choose to board a small boat and ride the waves for 30 minutes. We boarded the boat clutching onto the camera bag, the rucksack that has become the third passenger along our voyage and a small bag with spare shoes for me (as Mark insisted I will need my 'crappy' shoes as Robben Island will be muddy - it wasnt'). The first few minutes on the boat were rather pleasant - we watched some fishermen at the dock flinging their latest catch from one to ... read more

With just a few restless hours sleep we arrived in Cape Town but quickly forgot about the long flight when greeted by the breathtaking sight of Table Mountain which we soon realised dominates the view from every angle for miles and miles around. We were driven to our hotel by a typical South African (who looked and sounded just like our builder Derek - and no I don't mean all South African's sound and look alike - he really did look just like him!!). The Ocean View House is a beautiful guest house with the most stunning views (see pictures attached). After settling in we headed to Mount Nelson Hotel for afternoon tea (Thanks for the recommendation Auntie B). With fine aromas and a buffett of savoury and sweet food fit for a bear who has ... read more

You might be forgiven for thinking that arriving at Heathrow 7 and a half hours early is somewhat excessive. But the other half really do know how to live it up at the airport so I'm sure you would have done the same - given the opportunity (or the gold membership to the Virgin lounge...) Arriving through a private members entrance three men rushed over to take our cases before we were whisked to a private front desk to check in. The 'check in' desk looked more like the front desk at the Ritz than an airport check in and within 3 minutes we were walking down to security (that's right - walking - what's that all about!! 'Princess Shiri'). Within minutes we were through security and in the lounge. Having had a walk around checking ... read more

There is something rather odd (yet very comforting) about taking out a summer dress and a bikini from the wardrobe while dressed up in extra layers and the house radiators barely taking the chill out of the air (I have stopped short of wearing gloves...). But it can only mean one thing... oh ok maybe two... I might be having yet another clear out of my wardrobe or... (and this is the case in this instance) i'm getting ready to go on holday!! For those synics amongst you - no, this time I am not tagging along on one of Mark's work voyages, wandering the streets of yet another far away city alone with nothing but a guide book and my ipod for company - this is a real holiday. Ok so if you are looking ... read more
