We awoke early, our bags had already been taken, left in the hall last night to be taken ashore by the porters. We still had our carry-ons and they too were packed. Clothes for today had been set aside. The Cruise Director had made no announcement warning people to be sure and not pack “all” of your clothes, as some previous passengers have indeed woken up to discover that they literally had nothing to wear ashore! The Lido was dead when it opened at 6 am; despite, some people having very early departures. We could sit anywhere we wanted to! I chose the Eggs Benedict, hey, I’m on an egg-streak, why stop now! Sharon had a small amount of French toast and some potatoes the way that she likes them… just potatoes. They must have run ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona October 18th 2015

To start this final full day on the Nieuw Amsterdam we had breakfast in the Lido. I have gotten off my small breakfast diet as of late, having eggs, and today was no different. We won’t be arriving in Barcelona until later in the afternoon, so this is starting off as a mini-Sea Day. Having gone to Vigil Mass the night before, Sharon too finds herself with no need to hurry up and get ready for the day. To some extent, this has given us both some time to reflect on the past three weeks aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam. For example, allow me to take this opportunity to recall some of the special, some of the unusual, indeed some of the funny and perhaps not so funny moments that we experienced but perhaps didn’t record them ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Saint-Tropez October 17th 2015

We had breakfast in the Lido before we needed to be in the Showroom for our tour around 8 AM. I just had some potatoes and sausage and a couple of rolls; while, Sharon had some French toast. The room was packed as we arrived, and we were given our tour sticker at the door because St. Tropez is a tender port. We had to wait a few minutes while the five groups ahead of us headed to shore first. Somehow the group after us leapfrogged ahead of us to get the next bus; and, we had to wait for the next bus to be allowed to enter the port-dock area. We could see it waiting at the red and white striped gate just a couple hundred feet away. When another bus left, there was room ... read more

Europe » Monaco October 16th 2015

We were in no rush this morning, with no tour planned for Monaco. Instead, our modus operando was to get on the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus and take a loop of the town including stops at the casino and palace. We ate breakfast in the Dining Room, a fritata for me and some French toast for Sharon. I stopped by the Exploration Lounge on Deck 11 to pick up the Sudoku puzzles and returned to our cabin with them. I finished both of them slightly ahead of Sharon who winked and said that she was just being nice to me… again. The forecast called for a mostly sunny day. On the first leg of our cruise I’d talked with a couple who said they’d really enjoyed the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus in Monaco; but a couple on our trivia team ... read more

We slept well after our day ashore in Rome. Our plan was to meet Ruth and her friends around 8 AM in the Main Lobby, and join them for a tour to Lucca and Vicci scheduled to start at 8 AM ashore. Ruth figured the guide would wait we could blame it on needing to wait for the elevators to get the two scooters down and she didn’t want to be rushed. I told Sharon that we should probably get there before 8 PM or Ruth would be telling the guide that they had to wait for us! Sharon said no, so we took our time in the Lido getting our typical Lido breakfast. When we got to the Lido we noticed that we were still at sea, and our daily planner said that would should ... read more

With an early tour we went to the Lido early. I did my potatoes and sausage thing, with a couple of croissants and cheese (and a chocolate milk). Sharon did her potatoes and toast with apple juice. Our tour was to assemble in the Showroom before 7 AM; and, ours was the second tour called. We were on the short, 9-hour papal visit tour and the one just ahead of us was the longer 11-hour papal visit tour. In ours, we have lunch after the papal audience and then we do some Rome touring by coach. The other tour included a 2 hr shopping stop at the Peoples Square. Our guide informed us that it will be over one hour to drive to Rome this morning from Civitavecchia. This is the port created by Trajan. We ... read more

We went to the Lido this morning for breakfast. We’d arranged to go on a private tour with Ruth and her travelling companions. They chose to disembark a bit after the early rush for those leaving on tour, and scheduled our driver/guide to meet us around 9AM. I had only a couple of fresh rolls, a couple of those demitasse cups of Swiss muesli and some potatoes and two sausage patties. Sharon had only white toast and some potatoes with apple juice. I opted for an individual carton of chocolate milk, with writing in German and seemed to be claiming 3.5% milk fat. We had a bit of time to kill, and with our hectic schedule today, we had almost an hour to kill before we had to meet in the Main Deck atrium to disembark ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Mediterranean October 12th 2015

Being one of those scheduled sea days, we slept in and went to breakfast in the Dining Room. Sharon and I had gone to Vigil Mass, so there was no need to go again this morning. I had the American breakfast with eggs over medium and link sausage and Sharon enjoyed her scrambled eggs. Sharon wanted to go back to the cabin and adjust her choppers; so, I went up to the Crow’s Nest to scout out a place for us to play our Sudoku challenge. I bumped into Ruth on the way and said hey, she was scurrying off to her next activity. We’d see each other again this evening when we would be having dinner with her and some friends in the Pinnacle. Sharon arrived and we played our first game where I easily ... read more

Europe » Greece October 11th 2015

The today ON LOCATION predicted “Thundershowers” for our stop on the Island of Corfu in Greece today. From the Lido things didn’t look promising and there were still 5 to 10 foot seas. Several squalls had passed over us during the night, and another was approaching for later this afternoon. I decided to have scrambled eggs with link sausage and they had Sharon’s favorite multi-colored pan-fried potatoes (potatoes, sweet potatoes and I think even some blue potatoes… or maybe they were just burnt). I’m kidding about these being Sharon’s favorite because I can see her heart sink when they have nothing but these. During our meal in the Lido the captain announced over the P.A. system our position, weather conditions, course and speed, and oh yes, no port of call today. All tours have been cancelled ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor » Kotor October 10th 2015

We rose looking forward to setting foot in a new country for both of us. The forecast was for showers all day, so it was with some trepidation that we made our way to the Lido. We were still making our way to the harbor where we would set anchor and tender ashore. The weather did not look great from the window in the Lido, there was a low ceiling and we could make out the shoreline. I had my Irish Oatmeal, banana and some Swiss muesli. Sharon had some potatoes and toast. We were back in the room getting ready for our tour when they made an announcement over the outside intercom. All I could discern that they were closing the outside decks to keep passengers safe. When we walked into the Showroom to assemble ... read more
