Leaving Greece the captain informed us that there was a storm on their weather reports so he would be speeding up the ship overnight and we would arrive several hours early. This also meant we’d be starting thru the Dardanelles at 5:45 in the morning instead of 8. I decided for us to try the dining room once again for breakfast; although, I think Sharon was leaning towards the Lido. Still, there was no hurry and at 7 AM we switched on the TV as we were passing by the Dardanelles and Destination Specialist Tom was speaking of the historic significance of this area also known as Gallipoli. Near the entrance of the strait that connects to the Black Sea, the region has always held strategic importance. In ancient times on the Turkish side are the ... read more

The day began with Sharon telling me that she didn’t think she was feeling well enough to go out and climb the Acropolis. We breakfasted in the Lido and I stuck to the oatmeal. Sharon managed scrambled eggs and a piece of white toast. I went to the Showroom to wait for the tour, managing the backpack with camera and large bottle of water from the stateroom. “The Best of Athens” was by far the most popular tour, and we were dismissed by sections to go find the “Arrivals” sign and pass through the access controls. The busses were waiting outside. Again we had a woman tour guide, and again she spoke with that beautiful fluent Greek accented English. She apologized for the significant amount of graffiti that appeared practically everywhere from isolated walls, bridge underpasses ... read more

We had an early morning tour and we both slept until our 5:00 AM alarm. We went to the Lido for a quick breakfast, but Sharon forgot “something” and asked me to go through the line to get her scrambled eggs. After quite some wait, I also got “her” a couple of sausage patties. I looked all over for muesli, but there was none out for guests. I settled for some Irish oatmeal; but, there were also no bananas out for guests. I’m still trying to figure out how you go to breakfast without your teeth; but, I guess it happens. I’m just saying… Something new for us on Holland America Tours was that they had us sit in the Showroom as on many other ships, but they waited until a group was ready to disembark ... read more

That first night Sharon ventured down to the piano bar to check out the music; while, I finished up the blog for the day. I failed to mention something that the woman travelling alone had said at dinner, when asked how she was enjoying the cruise so far. She had started in Barcelona and this was her second leg, something that is apparently quite common; although, I have no recollection of others doing the same thing on our honeymoon. I would say about half of the people we’ve met so far are doing just that, taking advantage of the “Legacy Cruising”. Well, it raised all of our eyebrows when she said that she was having just a dreadful time. Her arthritis had flared up, a new condition that now nearly crippled her hands, and she said ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice September 25th 2015

We broke the cardinal rule of global travelers and submitted to our inclinations to take a short nap before dinner. Our five hour respite got us close to the 7:30 PM dinner time. We enjoyed some time sitting on some chairs on the grounds outside our room, in a delightful bricked patio featuring four arches. The highway approaching the airport bustled by, and Sharon remarked that we could have walked here from the terminal; although, with bags in tow that would have been a sight to see. Through one of the arches we viewed an aging olive tree, quite gnarled at the base, and the subsiding sun made quite a sight in the diminishing light. Sharon regretted that we’d left our phones in the room, but was determined to get a picture of the tree later. ... read more

First a big shout out to Sharon’s mother Shirley for her 86thBirthday today. We’ll try to call her but with the time difference and her schedule it may be difficult to get ahold of her for a few days. But we still hope she has a great day! It was over a year and a half ago when we decided to take a cruise on the ms Nieuw Amsterdam for our fifth wedding anniversary. It might not sound like much; so, I told Sharon she could impress fellow cruisers by saying it was our 60th(if you count by months). It might be more in line with some who will be cruising with us. We originally booked the Venice to Venice (by way of Turkey and Greece) and Venice to Barcelona (by way of Greece, the west ... read more

Sailing into Victoria we could see the approaching barren mountains of the coast looming closer, barren of any snow (okay, so it is summer isn’t it, and to paraphrase the Wizard of Oz, we’re not in Alaska any more)! Sharon headed to mass and then we headed up to the Lido for Breakfast. I got myself a serving of Swiss muesli in the Lido and some French toast to go with it. I had to wait because there wasn’t any premade ready to serve. Sharon got her scrambled eggs and they’ve reverted to the really soggy, chew, jerky-like turkey bacon. We went back to the cabin to don our “We don’t need Google” T-Shirts to commemorate this final day of Team Trivia at 10:00 AM in the Crow’s Nest. We stopped at the Explorer’s Lounge to ... read more

We’ve pretty much abandoned the dining room for breakfast and have been exclusively heading to the Lido, a marked change from most of our cruises. We have this one final lazy sea day to start and get our heads back into the real world. I decided to change things up and went with the meat laden spicy omelet with cheese, onions, jalapeños and salsa, and added some Siracha-like sauce after the fact. It was quite good. Sharon had her scrambled eggs and not-so-crispy Turkey Bacon. In today’s Sudoku challenge in the Exploration Lounge we had remembered to bring our pens, and glasses, and sat in a well-lit area, and there were no excuses I could imagine that Sharon might come up with today. As it turns out, she didn’t need to and won, beating me by ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Sitka June 26th 2015

We again headed to the Lido for breakfast. I chose to eat fried eggs over medium with French toast; while, Sharon also had the French toast with very crispy turkey bacon. We did the daily Sudoku Challenge in the Explorer’s Lounge, and this time Sharon beat me on the Easy game (by quite a margin). It was a different story on the Hard puzzle where Sharon threw up her hands and earned a DNF. We had no tours planned for the second part of this two-week cruise. We waited some before going down to the tender and take the considerable journey ashore which takes over ten minutes. We only wanted to walk around Sitka. We considered walking out to the totem park; but, that looked to be a walk of a mile or so and the ... read more

It’s very much like a “Sea Day” today, in that there is no port of call or sanctioned opportunity to disembark, what they like to call a scenic viewing day, when you’re supposed to see something really spectacular! Our day started in the Lido where we were dismayed by the worsening weather and visibility and the possibility of another Tracey Arm washout loomed as an increasingly likely possibility. There is at least with Hubbard Glacier a very wide sea approach; so, except for the increasing brash ice and bergie bits bobbing in the water, there really is no “visibility hazard” such as the narrow meandering fjord on the approach to the glacier on Tracy Arm; or the side glacier that you sometimes get a glimpse of there, what is it they call it, oh yes: Some ... read more
