We left Calgary this morning towards the Canadian Rockies. I was excited to see them and see if they are like I remember them from 1988, when I was here last. If anything, they are even more impressive! The drive from Calgary was easy, except for a little backed up traffic because of road works. What I didn't expect was toll booths on the Cross Canada Highway before Banff. Turns out they were for the Banff National Park. Just driving through is free, but if you want to enter the national park anywhere along the way, you need to purchase a pass. So we did, and it's good for tomorrow too. We drove on to Lake Minnewanka and entered the park. The road here makes a big loop with many stops on the way, where you ... read more

So, I have another two days to tell about. Yesterday was our trip west. We started at Gananoque in the Thousand Islands and, as usual, left later than we planned. We'll have to do something about that trend. We drove directly to Toronto to meet Seymour and Doris at Mother Tuckers restaurant near the airport. We had a lovely meal and a wonderful time with Seymour & Doris. Dad called us on Skype but we could barely hear him with all the noise around. Anyway, we transferred two big suitcases to Seymour's car, said our goodbyes and headed off to the airport with a lot less luggage than we'd been lugging around before. What a relief! We got lost in the airport a bit. If you think Ben Gurion is confusing you should try Pearson! Imagine ... read more

We left Ottawa today. Sad, it is a nice town. Less sad to leave to hotel. The room was no more than ok, its main advantage was its size. The hotel had no laundry room and no breakfast but the price didn't show that. Maybe I expected too much from a Sheraton hotel. Anyway, we had breakfast at a Tim Hortons (you can have your sugar with sugar, glucose, syrup, chocolate... you get the idea. Not safe for diabetics). Then we stopped at a grocery store on our way to pick up our car from Gaye & Bob. And to thank them again. We went on our way South towards the St. Lawrence and the Thousand Islands. We stopped at the St. Lawrence Islands National Park Interpretive Center at Mallorytown Landing. They have a very nice ... read more

The nation's capital. Ottawa is, in our opinion, the prettiest city we've visited so far in Canada. It's small, so everything is within walking distance, very convenient. We started, of course, with the Changing of the Guard. It's supposed to start at 10:00 am on the dot, but it actually started early! We were lucky to be there early to catch a good spot. Here's our video of the ceremony: I went to stand i line for tour tickets of the parliament, so I missed a good part of the ceremony, but I did see enough. It was very impressive! At least I got the tickets! The tours are free, but the available spots are limited. We went to see the locks on the Rideau Canal before our first tour. We saw the locks in action, which ... read more

Today we left Montreal. We had a wonderful time there, but all good things must end, and more good things are to come, right? We didn't drive directly to Ottawa. What would be the fun of that? No, we took a roundabout route through the Laurentian mountains, to the North of Montreal. After about an hour's drive we got to Saint-Sauveur, a little town in the hills surrounded on all sides with ski slopes. It's a beautiful little town but not much to do here in summer. People come in summer to spend a weekend here to get away from life in the city. We continued on to Saint-Adolphe-d'Howard, a little further along the road. But we saw something that looked interesting before we got there. Turned out to be a village yard sale, so we ... read more

Yes, I know you've all been waiting for an update since yesterday. I promised I'd tryto keep the blog updated and you must admit I did pretty OK so far, right? So. Montreal. We left Quebec city yesterday. It was still a little overcast but the rain had mostly stopped, finally. We stopped along the way at Trois-Rivieres for some shopping and a break before getting to Montreal. Our time in Montreal started in the Jewish neighborhood (well, predominantly Jewish. Neighborhoods here tend to be very mixed) at the famous Schwartz's Deli for a sandwich. One sandwich is served here - roast beef with mustard on plain white bread - and people line up along the street just to get in. It's packed inside. Wall to wall with folks munching their roast beef sandwiches! We took ... read more

Today was wet. It didn't stop raining all day. We got up late and took our time getting organized, hoping that just maybe the rain would let up a bit. We did laundry while we waited. We finally did venture out to the city. Quebec is a very beautiful city even in the rain. We heard canons firing from the Quebec citadel in honor of Canada Day but by the time we found them they had finished, so we walked on to the old city. Everything of interest in the old city is within walking distance. We walked to Chateau Frontenac, the most photographed hotel in the world and no wonder! It's a very impressive building both inside and out! Tall towers and spires, arched gateways, liveried doormen and attendants, chandeliers and marble within. And right ... read more

Today we had a long drive from our hotel in Brossard, just outside of Montreal, to Quebec City. We took our time getting organized in the morning and went on our way. We stopped just outside of town at the Mont Saint Bruno national park for a walk in the woods. What a lovely park! We had a very nice walk, saw squirrels, chipmunks, and even a few deer! We came across a grassy beach on the pond with some chaise lounges and a playground. We wandered around, the kids had fun on the trampoline, until someone kicked us out - it was private property... We continued our walk back to the car and had sandwiches before commencing our journey. It's a long and boring drive to Quebec, about two and a half hours of flat ... read more

We got up early but took our time getting organized. After everything was packed we went to breakfast at the restaurant next door (the hotel doesn't serve breakfast but guests get a discount at the restaurant). We had a very full meal. Tamar had scrambled eggs with bacon, toast, potato and hot chocolate. Ethan had French toast with two eggs over easy, hot chocolate with whipped cream, and Gilat and I shared a vegetable omlete with toast and potatoes, and, of course, coffee. We set out on our way at around 10 am. A short drive to Lake Placid to see Mirror Lake. Very similar to Saranac Lake, with the picturesque town on the shores of the lake. We continued on our way to High Falls Gorge, but Waze took us through a high-end neighborhood. Really ... read more

Well, another rainy day. Almost makes me think we're in England. We had a breakfast of scrambled eggs sans salt, toast, pancakes & waffles at the hotel. Comfort Inn in Syracuse is ok, but no more than that. We drove north towards the small town of Dexter, to try to find Dexter's Marsh, home to wildlife, fowl & fish, but all we found were boat launching points for the fishermen and Harbor Battlefield park. So we continued to the Bonaparte Caves, where Napoleon's brother and his family supposedly hid out after Napoleon was kicked out. We didn't find that either. But somewhere along the way we rescued a baby snapping turtle that was trying to cross the road. Note to self: double check the directions for out-of-the-way places. On the road again, through the rainy Adirondacks. ... read more
