We left Valdez made a short stop at the information center. It was open this time, and they have explanations on the process of fish raising at the hatchery. Now we understand what we saw yesterday. They also had some animal skins and the kids wore bear skins. We made the long drive to Chitina, with an emergency gas stop along the way at a tiny gas station with one pump in the middle of nowhere. We went on our way uneventfully and got to the Chitina airstrip, and within a few minutes our plane came for us, a tiny one propeller plane with just enough room for the four of us and the pilot. Tamar got to be the copilot, and Ethan will co-fly the plane back. That was a fun flight! A bit bumpy, ... read more

I'll write about two days in this blog, both centered around Prince William Sound We left the err... delightful Camelot Cottages on the way to Whittier. There are three ways to get to Whittier; plane, boat, or car. We drove for a couple of hours to the access to Whittier. To get to Whittier by car you have to go through a tunnel. The tunnel serves traffic in both directions, and a train. So far so good. The thing is, there is only one lane for all of that! And it's just barely wide enough for a train! Crazy! So, they have a time schedule. We paid the fare and stood in line for the 10:30 opening to Whittier. They put the vehicles in waiting lanes; the first three or four lanes for cars, then small ... read more

We got up really early today. Six o'clock. Got dressed warm, had breakfast and headed out to Seward, to the office of Kayak Adventures Worldwide, a small outfit that takes folk out on kayaking trips in the area. We got there on time, 7:15, and met the team there. Our guide Emily set us up with rain pants and all the gear we'd need for the trip, including sandwiches and snacks for lunch. We packed into a van with another group and rode down to the dock (just 5 minutes away), and loaded up onto our water taxi for the ride to Aialik Bay. A two and a half hour ride, and the captain of the boat kept close to the cliffs where we had the best chance to see wildlife. He pointed out a bald ... read more

We left the Historic Anchorage hotel today. Of course the kids had to check out the souvenir shop next door, and came out with Alaska t-shirts, an antler slingshot and other assorted souvenirs. We drove along the Turnagain Arm, a long, narrow bay that Captain Cook traveled up in another attempt to find a northwestern passage. He reached the end and had to turn around. Again. So that's what he named it and the name stuck. Along the way we stopped at Beluga Point to try our luck with whales. No luck, but boy was it windy! Ethan's new slingshot was tested with pebbles. They go pretty far out to sea, but I still think it would be best to hang it up as a display in his room when we get home. A little further ... read more

Our first day in Alaska! After a long (well, it seemed long) and uneventful flight we landed in Anchorage late last night. Strangely enough our suitcase was one of the first out! And when we stepped out to look for a taxi there was one right there. I hope this is a sign of things to come. We got to our room at the Historic Anchorage hotel in the center of town. Our room is huge! And really nice. The name fits the hotel, yet the WIFI works well, TV, coffee machine, fridge. Historic but not run down. Anyway we crashed. We were up for breakfast, which was usual hotel fare, and went out. We rented bicycles from just up the street from the Downtown Bicycle Rental. Very nice, pleasant team who set everything up for ... read more

We took it easy today. A nice change, let me tell you! We packed ourselves up after two pleasant nights at the Best Western hotel in Edmonds and set out on our way. Our first stop was just 20 minutes later, at Carkeek park. Yeah, funny name, I know, but a lovely little park. We followed a creek down towards the beach, crossed a bridge over the railroad tracks and spent the better part of two hours wandering along the beach of Puget Sound. We found all sorts of treasures on the dark, almost black sand. Shells, seaweed, hermit crabs, lots of sea anemones and barnacles, even a starfish! All living and well in the tide pools. Lots of crows and seagulls searched for pickings between the rocks. We even saw a blue heron fishing in ... read more

Ok, I guess I owe y'all another two days' worth of blog. I'll start with yesterday, July 13th. We left the Ramada at Harrison Hot Springs (a very poor hotel), did a little souvenir shopping and made our way towards the USA. On the way we saw lots of raspberry-like bushes along the roadside, and even saw someone who stopped on an adjacent street complete with hat and gloves picking berries. Needless to say, we stopped at the first available opportunity and filled our bellies with delicious, juicy, sweet raspberries (or blackberries, I dunno. Tasty berries). Just a few minutes later we were at the border crossing. The wait wasn't too long, I guess we were lucky. Just 15 minutes or so. The border police who checked our passports had a little chat with us, advised ... read more

It's going to be a short one today. We left the hotel in Revelstoke, filled the car up with gas and after shopping got on the road. Our first stop was in Salmon Arm, at a park. I should say at THE park. Salmon Arm, like most places in the Rockies, is a small town on a lake. This one has a lovely little park on the lake with picnic tables, grass lawns, shade trees, and, of course, the lake. Oh, and a fountain in the lake. We had a snack by the lake and went for a short walk. We saw an osprey posing for us on a branch, some ducks and other birds, and even a couple turtles in the water. After a rest from the road we continued on our way South. We ... read more

Well, we left Golden today, going further west. We had a relatively easy day today, driving less than 200 km. We stopped at the Glacier National Park center for a parks pass, and on the way we noticed a sign saying we just gained an hour to the day! We passed a time zone by car. That's a first for me! The Glacier Park center was very nice, with good exhibits about the railway and highway 1, and the wildlife of the area. We also got some advice on how to continue the day, which was very helpful. We took the advice of the parks guide there and stopped at the Hemlock Grove Boardwalk in Glacier NP, a short yet beautiful walk in the only cedar & hemlock rain forest in the world. We strolled among ... read more

We didn't really do all that much today, but we enjoyed what we did. After a good breakfast we left Canmore for Johnston Canyon. Our plan was to hike up the canyon, but when we got there the trail was closed due to a tree that fell across it right at the beginning. Bummer. But we found a park ranger and asked his advice, and he told us of another way to the upper part of the canyon, on what is known as the Moose Meadow trail. Why it's called that I do not know. We saw neither moose nor meadow the whole way. We did see lots of forest, a couple squirrels, butterflies, the most beautiful flowers, and we reached the upper Johnston falls not long before they closed those off too. A couple of ... read more
