As a Mexican myself, I recommend traveling to Oaxaca, Tlaxcala, or Yucatan to the Chitzen Itza, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

I spent Xmas in Westin Regina in Puerto Vallarta. The staff would bend over backwards to help us out. Really had a good time just like you did, felt like home.

What will you do when the trip is over? Dad and I were wondering what you'd do. There is that trawler engine ofcourse! You're lucky that you keep in good health. Dad and I are real old crocks. There has been a bug going round and believe it or not I caught it. I rarely do.
I've been in touch with auntie Norah and Jackie sent me a couple of photos. She's like dad. She looks well. I'm off to bed now as I have one of those B12 injections tomorrow. It's one of the sort where the nurse says "You'll feel a scratch" and then you feel as if she's gone into the bone marrow. I asked why she bothered to say anything at all and she said it calms the patient. So this is what calm feels like. Awful floods in Queensland. looking forward to your return. xxx
Great pics & Lovely quilt! It's a super quilt. Wonder how aunt Sheila finds the time to do it. Been tired all day today as I've picked up a tummy bug, probably from June whose family have all had it. Ugh!
Today was dullish. Dad can't go out in this cold weather so he feels imprisoned - and there's more cold to come so they say.
The pics are super. Nice to see Sheila and the shots of places around. Love from dad and me mumx
Christmas Cleaning! Well we always used to do it but it's perhaps not so meticulous these days. Suffering from aches and pains EVERYWHERE so who can wield a duster in that state. Dad is very weak but is holding on till you get back though myself I can't see how he can be so sure of dying according to the calendar. He's just a bit down in the dumps. When I pulled the curtain rail at the dining room door down he said it could wait till you got back, but Alice fixed it. Tomorrow, well today now, I'm getting some treatment at Moorfields eye hospital. Alice is going with me this time. Fingies crossed!! Chris has relatives in NZ and I used to know her aunt Peg, but she's dead now I think. I'm half dead with the rheumatiz but only half. Lots of love from dad and me mum
Kings Park You're managing to see quite a bit of the country around where auntie Sheila lives. I took so long to get over jet lag that I ended up too tired to go and see anything at all. Actually jet lag makes me feel unwell. Your call tonight surprised me. I was trying to mop up the water that boiled over onto the stove and had wet hands and couldn't find a towel. You can imagine the scenario. Dad was dozing away in his chair. He went out with Alice today as he had some business to attend to but he got home bushed, hardly able to walk and ready to snooze the evening away. He is awfully weak and I can't think of enough ways to assist him, but he says it's fine. I hope I can make a call to auntie Sheila while you're there, but during the day while the old brain is at it's brightest. I wonder what you'll be doing on Christmas day and can't remember any that you didn't spend with us. I suppose it's my bad memory. On Monday I'll get my first treatment for my eye at Moorfields. Alice will go up with me as I might not be able to see properly coming home. Ugh! I'm shuddering already. Love from dad and me mumxx
chilling! Seem to have lost a message of yours, perhaps it was a text saying that you planned to take the train into Perth centre. You'd better buy yourself something nice and warm to wear for when you get home. It's cold. Dad and the girls went up to Barts today. All went well. I got my B12 injection which always hurts but no doubt does me good. Paarking in the surgery car park was like something out of a Roman festival only everyone was snappy. They need a bigger car park. Did a little shopping in Epping, cards, paper napkins etc. You can't get those big boxes of mixed cards any more, just packs with about ten in them. I've not made any cards this year and still cant find those I saved from last year. Grrr! Weather I hear is scheduled to get colder. Love to you and auntie Sheila from dad and mum xxxx
re rockingham When you arrive back in the UK you will get the biggest shock, weatherwise. Today is frosty, very Christmassy, but will I be able to start the car after all the time it's been sitting under snow. I have an appointment at the surgery. Better get off now. Love to all. Will give you news of dad after he gets back from Barts. xxx
singapura Got your text via Dom today. Glad it's all going well. We've got SNOW! It's just like it used to be and the promise is that it will go on for at least another week. Aberdeenshire is having a terrible time as is the Newcastle areas. Love mum and dad xxx
re Ayuthaya Bet it's hot where you are - well not here. We've really got winter with temperatures in the minuses. Mo came over today and cut back our hedge which was getting very straggly. There's hardly any hedge left as the branches lower down need to be laid.
We didn't go anywhere today. Not even dad wanted to poke his nose outside the door. I come in as quickly as possible but do need to show willing. Well, off to bed now. It is the warmest place. Our love to you. dad and mum xxx
Thailand - Ayuthaya All that sounds very entertaining HOWEVER sitting with your legs dangling out of the door of a moving train....! Not being familiar with elephants I guess pulling your hand away was the sensible thing to do. Might have been it took an affectionate fancy to you hmm?
Had phonecall from Jacqui who sounds busy but not I thought very relaxed. She's having a break from Riah at present. I'm afraid she's spared the rod and spoiled the child. It would have taken so little to teach Riah while small where her boundaries are. Now she has a hard lesson to learn by herself. Winter is here, blocked roads, Aberdeenshire with, as usual, the worst of the blizzards with snow ploughs out and stranded motorists. Alice treated us to lunch at Prezzo's. Dad is so frail now a days. I thought it wise to use the disabled toilet with him - for safety sake. Goodness knows what the other diners thought we were doing in there!! Take care and much love from dad and me mum xxxx
re river Kwai I'm envious. I'd have loved to see that bridge. I've seen the film a few times, but it's not the same. Yes you're wise not to have chosen to take a packaged holiday. We did twice, once to Butlins (that was your fault) and once to Tunisia and I swore never again. Had another text from Dom to say she'd heard from you. You wont want to come home when you see the temperatures here. It's winter. I have to get my eye done soon. I can't see to drive in the dark anymore thanks to that bloody eye. Still, treatment starts soon with a needle in the eye. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M DOING THIS! A needle in the eye!!! love from us mum and dad
Royal Bangkok We try to follow your progress by your blogs and emails and it's very interesting. I've finally heard about the possible treatment for my bad eye. For me speed is of the essence. I drove dad and me home on Tuesday evening after PAH and wont do that again. In the dark I can't see. We'll be stumped if I can't drive. Cheers us up to read your diary though. A month till Christmas. Don't know how we feel about that this year. So much ill health. Take care love from dad and mum xxx
Greetings from Essex Hi Mike,
You seem to be having a great time and some great pictures of some great views, sunsets, coloured bridges and of course food vendors. Nice to see that you made it back to where you lived all those years ago in Hong Kong and your school and nice that it has not changed too much since you were there. Hotel pool looked nice as well and the view from it looked fab, you see these sort of pictures on the tv but never think they are quite real, but now i know they are.
I like the idea of the train with no wheels, sounds like fun to me, just think if we had one of them from Chelmsford to London, it would take about 5 minutes to get to London, fab. Not sure i like the idea of sleeping on a floor though on one of your other train journeys.
I've noticed you seem to be sampling a lot of local food as well, bet your missing a nice sandwich from the sandwich van though or a dounut or 2 from Southend Seafront. Not sure i'd be as brave as you and just buy something and then find out what it is, but at least that cafe you found had a menu with pictures.
Keep the updates coming, nice to hear what your doing.
All the best,
Chris
23rd.Nov. All afternoon at PAH but earlier than usual. Raining but it didn't stop dad going to Lidl. They do good veggies. Shops in Epping are decorated up for Christmas but the Christmas market is still to come.
getting around. I am having my usual struggle with facebook who offer me various passwords none of which they accept. I shall leap from the 14th floor of some inoffensive tower block.
Bangkok Dad and I plan to do very little today. He enjoyed his usual Friday visit to St.Clare's and found it very sad that nearly all the people there have no more than a few months to live. I don't think he included himself in that number. That cheered me up. Where do you think you'll be on Christmas day - I would suppose Australia. By the way, where is OZ and what are aquatic turbo-intercooled drag racers? I thought dragon boats were propelled by men rowing. love from dad and mum xxx
Bangkok Bangkok sounds like a modern city. Is it big enough to be called a city? Now you'll be wondering how big is big! And the foods - you must have enjoyed quite a variety of cooking styles. Write down some simple receipes, or rather the spices that go into them. This is a wonderful time for a trip round the world for you. Later might be too late. Don't know much about Phuket It's an island isn't it, but off where? Dad enjoyed his day at St.Clare's. You know sitting in his chair he looks quite like normal, it's only when he gets up and walks bent over that you realise how frail he has become. You're not going to India are you? Lots of luv from dad and me, mum xxx PS didn't recognise your voice this morning. Must be getting deafer.
hong kong again Seems quite a while since we had a new message from you. Everything OK? Anyhow, where are you - Bankok perhaps. We're into winter here where all winds have an edge to them and there's frost on the roofs in the mornings. Tonight it's pouring. Tomorrow Sheila is going up to Harlow Hospital with me as I am having a gastroscopy. ugh! I wont be having sedation, just a throat spray so the whole thing shouldn't take too long. Personally I think they don't care how long they keep you hanging around since patients tend to be taken in in two batches, morning and late afternoon. Had the odd text from Dom. Did I say we really enjoyed the visit from her and Tyler? Dad is managing so I don't need to be on hot plates worrying and can go out a bit. Today it was the drama group. All those lyrics to learn!!! Love from us two to you, mum and dad xxxxxx
me catching up! The piccies are very good. Dad want to know what you're holding in your hand in the packet. I said FOOD. The maglev train is fascinating. I know Japan had some sort of fast train, magnetic I think, but seems China has left them behind. The Chinese are doing wonderfully well. We had a visit from Dom and Tyler on Saturday. We were very impressed with him, bright, intelligent and looks very like his Ma. Nothing great going on here - getting colder and dad is always just that little bit weaker. Oh yes he thinks the colourful view from the water is of Kowloon side. And I've just come across the message where you say you went swimming in Deep Water Bay. You've acquired quite a tan! love from us both xxx
It's when the sea temperature reaches 26˚C that typhoons occur, but lets hope there wont be one. You're still enjoying the trip then? And we still wish... None of your post from HK etc has reached here so far. Would you have expected your parcels to have arrived? Tomorrow we are expecting a visit from Dom. She's had her tooth out, I think. Anyhow I texted that we'll be having our flu jabs early tomorrow and to come after 11am and then said come any time at all but give me a ring to make sure we haven't left for Hong Kong. Don't know whether she'll bring Tyler. I'm trying to keep a record of your messages for dad to read so keep them coming. Oh yes - Jen was sent to Paris by her firm to oversee the setting up of some display to do with lighting and she's gone alone. Alice says Jen's quite confident about it all - guess her year of travel gave her that confidence. Take care. mumxxx
from shanghai to Hong Kong I suppose buying a Stirling engine would have been like 'taking coals to Newcastle'? Didn't know there were razor wire fences between China and the New Territories, to say nothing of watchtowers and machine gun armed guards. We watched a film about Rudyard Kipling who encouraged his only son to become a soldier and sent him off to fight in the '14 to '18 war. He seemed quite unbelieving when he was killed. We thought about you and felt very sad. Please do not return home dead!!! Had my memory test today. I'm worried because I always forget appointments, dates of and times for. The doctor seemed to think my memory is only slightly affected. Dad says I ask the same questions over and over again which is, I admit, a very bad habit. Where is your next port of call? xxx
