Last day in Shanghai. Went to end of the Metro line, Called Aerospace museum. Thought it might be interesting. Unfortunately it hadn't been built yet. The only other thing there was a posh, out of town restaurant. Had a banquet meal for £7 then took sleeper train to Guangzhou and continued to Hong Kong, A 24 hour journey in all. Managed to fit in a visit to the worlds only Stirling engine factory in Dongguan. Crossed back to HK at the Lo Wu checkpoint, the 12ft high razor wire fences are still there but the Watchtowers are no longer manned by guards with machine guns.

I suppose buying a Stirling engine would have been like 'taking coals to Newcastle'? Didn't know there were razor wire fences between China and the New Territories, to say nothing of watchtowers and machine gun armed guards. We watched a film about Rudyard Kipling who encouraged his only son to become a soldier and sent him off to fight in the '14 to '18 war. He seemed quite unbelieving when he was killed. We thought about you and felt very sad. Please do not return home dead!!! Had my memory test today. I'm worried because I always forget appointments, dates of and times for. The doctor seemed to think my memory is only slightly affected. Dad says I ask the same questions over and over again which is, I admit, a very bad habit. Where is your next port of call? xxx
