Washing day! It took us a while to figure out that a Laundromat is called a “Laverie” but we eventually made the connection. The Laverie would not be a bad idea for a second income if you live in the area. It was all coin operated, with a mobile phone number on the wall if anything went wrong. Yet another warm, sunny day in Alsace. According to our mate Paul, it was raining back home, which is wonderful for our garden. After our entertaining morning of clothes washing, we took a drive to the Ballon D’Alsace, which is the second highest peak in the Vosges mountain range. We went to the Ballon, via the town of Thann. Wonderful views from the top of the peak and a lovely statue of Joan of Arc looking toward Lorraine ... read more

Today was a very special day! At 11am, precisely as arranged my distant cousin Jean arrived to collect us from our hotel. He was accompanied by his friends Danni, Christine and Jacque from Paris and Nice respectively. They took a quick tour around Bergheim and then met us at our car so we could follow them to Niedermorschwihr, not far from Colmar. There we met Jean’s wife Beatrice and her cousin Lilly (actually Nelly). I have to admit that I was a bit nervous about meeting them, or was it just anxiety and excitement? We joined them for a lovely lunch and Beatrice exclaimed happily to her friends that I had a striking resemblance to my Uncle Max who they had met a number of times over the last 20 years or so. I also liked ... read more

Had breakfast at the hotel, breads, croissants, jam, coffee, orange juice. Then we drove to Colmar. The scenery was spectacular, vineyards as far as the eye can see, mountains and wonderful medieval villages. Colmar was interesting, a bustling town full of tourists. Like Amsterdam, it has no high rise buildings and lots of quaint streets. We parked in a parking station and had trouble finding our way to the street. A guy in his mid fifties, who we presumed was French, pointed us to the exit. We wandered about, and then grabbed a coffee near the cathedral. We spotted the guy from the car park with his wife and gave them a wave. I invited them to join us for coffee in my best French and then found out they are from Kent in England! We ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Strasbourg September 2nd 2004

Slept ok but our room was close to a few nightclubs and a small casino so it was a bit noisy. Took a walk about and found myself in a hair salon with my fingers crossed as a young gay hairdresser commenced to cut and colour my hair. It was a funny experience, he with no English and me with my wonderful French I had learnt 28 years ago and never used until now! The result was interesting after about two hours I had almost bright red hair that looked something like I had stuck my fingers in a light socket. Obviously my attempts to say I would just like a trim please did not translate well! So, with my new look we headed from Strasbourg to find the village of Bergheim, about one hours drive ... read more

Back in Tilburg we needed a day to recover from our visit to Waganingen. Bianca can be a bit “busy” so it was good to have some peace! We spent the day repacking our bags and trying to work out how to fit the gifts that we had been given to take back to family in Australia. For some reason we had umpteen video tapes of some Dutch daytime soapy to take back to Moeder, 6 tubs of some special shaving soap that Pa loves, plus some bottles of a particular brand of eggnog that we just had to take back with us ! With that done we wrote some emails and relaxed. Then realised we did not leave for another two days! 31st August 2004 - we drove to Eindhoven to get our rail tickets. ... read more

A day of bicycle riding. After pedaling through Waganingen, then along the Rhine River, we found ourselves in the town of Rhenen. This town was once the home of the king’s palace. The church here has been destroyed so many times by fire or bombings that after rebuilding it a number of times the local decided it must be bad luck to complete the building works, so they have left one brick out of the building so it is technically not completed (seems to have broken the run of bad luck so far). The museum in Rhenen was also very interesting for such a small town, with a lot of Bronze Age items and primitive jeweler. They also had some postcards with a painting done by Bert's grandfather on them, one entitled "Evacuation of Rhenen in ... read more

We toured the Kroller-Muller Museum in the Hoges Voleuw National Park. It has an amazing collection of Van Gough and Picasso paintings, plus some incredible sculptures displayed around its very large grounds. From there we visited the Openlucht Museum, which housed displays of Dutch country life throughout the ages. Then we went driving through the Posbank National Park just on sunset. Again it was mostly reclaimed land that has been converted to heath land. It had a soft, pinkish look to the landscape as the sunset. ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Brabant » Tilburg August 22nd 2004

22nd August 2004 - So, after 10 minutes on the A2, I got a bit more relaxed about the driving (it was much easier on a divided road with all the traffic heading in the same direction). The A2 lead us toward Utrecht and then Breda, and on toward Tilburg. Our friend Michel met us at a petrol stop and led us into Tilburg, to the home he shares with Lorenza's cousin Liesbeth. Michel took us on a scenic route to their place (no way could I find it again) via lush green fields, full of Friesian cows (you know the black & white ones). It was so good to see Michel and Liesbeth again, last time we saw them was a few years before at our place. When they visited, they were sunburnt; sun struck ... read more

19th to 22nd August 2004 - Amsterdam Our route took us from Sydney to Bangkok, then onto Heathrow and a bus to Gatwick, and finally a flight to Amsterdam. The reason for the round-a-bout journey was that the only flights we could get from Heathrow to Amsterdam meant we would be waiting at Heathrow for five hours (something we did not want to do). So, we opted for the bus transfer to Gatwick instead, which at least kept us moving. Waiting for the Gatwick bus we got talking to some Kenyans who were on their way home to continue their studies. They were interesting young people and suggested we visit their country sometime to see the wildlife. We continued our talk once we got to Gatwick and helped them get their suitcases from the luggage hold ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Mount Field March 12th 1993

We made it to Mount Field with just enough day light to set up our tent. We then took a brisk walk through the forest. Lots of old swamp gums which were obviously growing well before any of us white folks discovered Tasmania. Next morning we were up early and walking again. We spotted lots of potteroos and wallabies. Lorenza seemed to be loving our Tassie tour so far and I was so happy she shared my opinion of this place being so special. The padymelons were hanging around our campsite, in the nearby river hundreds if fish (about 6 to 8 inches long) are jumping form the water and seem to be catching insects of some sort. As dusk fell it was lovely to listen to the birds calling and the river singing it's own ... read more
