It’s still raining early this morning but the weather forecast said it would stop and be sunny today for my Antelope Canyon tour. And the weatherman is never wrong, right? The weatherman was right on - what a superb day for hiking the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons. The native guides were really helpful giving us pointers on which settings to use down in the canyons to make our pictures sooo much more colourful. I took literally hundreds of photos that you may or may not want to suffer through once I am able to upload them. While I was waiting for the tour pickup at the Clarion Hotel in Page, I took advantage of their wifi to upload all the pics on my phone from the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. At the Lower Antelope ... read more

Here’s my thing I forgot to tell you before. Somewhere in New Mexico there was a volcano 10,000 years ago that erupted and spewed lava all over the place. This is relatively recent in the overall scheme of things. I noticed as I was humming along down the road that the rocks had turned from red to pure black. Upon further viewing of large outcrops I could determine that the rocks were definitely lava stone. And then I saw a sign advertising “Ice Caves/Banderos Volcano” - that confirmed my suspicions. Petrified wood - some of them are absolutely stunning - one of those small pieces would look fantastic in my garden. However, I don’t want to go to prison for taking one. I’m sorry you will have to wait for some time to get any more ... read more

Here I go again - forgot to tell you something from 2 days ago. When I drove out of Oklahoma City, I passed a Happy Tracks Horse Motel - ha! There was a livestock smell in my van after that that I couldn’t get rid of despite running the windows down. That smell stayed and I began to wonder if there was something in the van that smelled. About 10 miles out of Oklahoma City I saw ahead a large area that was all black - very curious. When I finally arrived close to it, it was a cattle shipping station and that was where the smell was coming from - it was absolutely disgusting! There were acres and acres of black angus cattle all crowded into small corrals waiting to be shipped. It was enough ... read more

Before I forget (because I forgot yesterday or the day before, I don’t know) I saw a tree that had mistletoe growing in it. The only reason I know it was mistletoe is because my cousins Heather & Richard in Kentucky showed them to me when I was there. It is a parasite on deciduous trees where is draws water and nutrients. The bare tree looks like someone decorated it for Christmas with dark green tufts dispersed among the branches. I like to think of it as Druid Decorations. As I finished up in Oklahoma and entered the top north piece of Texas, that punishing wind finally diminished and the driving was a little easier. Coming into Texas, the land changed significantly which leads me to wonder if they drew up state lines based on changes ... read more

Before I start on today’s events, I want to do some catchup comments about the previous two days. As you are probably aware, the US is famous for the plethora of billboards. A couple I noticed were in Missouri. The first was a very irritating advert about Uranus. What’s so unusual about that you ask? Well, there’s a big candy store called Uranus and the billboards (so many of them!) asked “ Can’t find Uranus?” or “The Best Fudge is in Uranus”. I certainly didn’t feel the urge to visit that store and was happy to see the last of the billboards. It seems Missouri has a very modern attitude towards drugs. The first ad I saw was “Mushrooms - for the psychedelic curious” and the next one was for “Rock Joints” (not marijuana - not ... read more

This is a catch up blog for two days. Yesterday I stayed at Shakamak State Park somewhere in the wilds of Indiana with no wifi. After a 10 hour drive yesterday, we arrived at Shakamak in the rain at about 4:30. It was a long tedious drive and took longer than expected because I felt the need to stop every 2-3 hours to reassure Malika and encourage her to eat, use the litter and have a drink and a cuddle for a few minutes. She has found a hiding spot by the back door under the bed and runs for it as soon as the van moves. But once we stop she is out and exploring and was actually playing with her toys last night. I never realized how much time she is up in the ... read more

Preparations have been going on for a while now for my departure on March 16. I keep having to jump hurdles - first snowstorms when I’m trying to get the motorhome out of the barn; next the van won’t start. I mean really won’t start - despite the fact that I started it regularly over the winter and let it run to keep the battery charged. Even a jump start won’t keep it going. As soon as the booster cables were removed, it quit. SO…tow truck to take it to Eichenbergs for a check up. Seems like it’s either a defective battery or alternator. It was so sad to see my disabled baby slowly trailing behind the tow truck. But better now than when I’m going through a desert in the South West. I thought I ... read more

Sitting in Nadi Airport at 11 am, our flight was supposed to leave at 1:00, then changed to 2:00, now it’s 3:00 pm. May never make it home. We may miss the Auckland connection which means we would definitely miss tbe Vancouver connection to Toronto. Have to sit looking at all the duty free - so tempting but I don’t need any of it. Well we didn’t miss our Auckland connection and we are waiting in Vancouver to get on the flight back to Toronto any minute now. If all goes well I will make it back to Tillsonburg.... read more

Well, how did that happen? Three weeks gone already and not looking forward to returning to Ontario to the cold and snow. Went out snorkeling for an hour this morning. We went out to the inner coral reef and saw plenty of small very colourful fish and iridescent blue starfish. There are small new coral lumps in pale purple colour that attract small black fish with white dots on them. Some of the little fish are eye-popping purple/blue, some are see through, some are striped, and there are turquoise & black striped. I saw a strange creature that was about 18” long as big around as an english cucumber with two tone brown colours. It moved out of my way a little and I decided to give it plenty of space! The South Pacific ocean is ... read more

It is extremely humid this morning after the rain yesterday. And our room air conditioner decided to quit working so I guess it’s time to hit the pool again. We have two boat trips booked this afternoon. At 12:30 we go on the glass bottom boat to see the coral reef and then at 2:30 we go on a longer trip. Back from the glass bottom boat over the coral beds. It looks like a lot of the coral is dead but there is still some pretty blue and green tree looking coral (fire coral according to the boat captain). I didn’t add any pictures of the coral through the glass bottom because it just didn’t pick up very clearly. We didn’t go out to the big reef that surrounds the island where the waves hit ... read more
