This will be short and not so sweet. Why can’t campgrounds provide reliable wifi for their campers? Wifi will be very limited. Tomorrow night I will be staying in a state park in Indiana so no wifi at all You may not hear from me again until I’m home. So no worries, things are going well. Got away at 8:30 and landed in the campground at 3:30 but with a few stops in between. When it’s a long day I like to stop every couple of hours, let Malika out and use the restroom of wherever I happen to be. Or get gas as the need arises. The Welcome Centre for Missouri beckoned me in to use the restroom and then the information lady was waving and saying Hi so I went and had some laughs ... read more

Challenging and exhausting - that’s how I describe my drive after I crossed into Oklahoma. The wind gusts were 50 mph and sometimes so strong that I was struggling to stay in my lane. Once I ended up in the left lane because I couldn’t hold it back. Good thing no one was beside me. Because I missed it on the way out west, I left early this morning to stop in Elk City, OK to see the National Route 66 museum. Wouldn’t you know it? It’s not open on Sunday. Now that I think about it, I believe it was Sunday when I went through before. Anyway I took some pictures of the grounds, etc. so that will have to satisfy me for now. At noon we stopped just before Oklahoma City to rest and ... read more

Ok here’s something I forgot about 3 days ago. When I was coming across one of those big mountains on my way to Carlsbad, I kept thinking something’s different. Then I realized that I wasn’t on a desert mountain like the others I had been across. This was a mountain with tall deep green pine trees marching up the slopes. And they were all pines, no spruce or deciduous and it was cool and refreshing like being in northern Ontario. It put me in mind of the Black Forest in Germany where all the evergreens are of such a dark green that they almost look black. I left KOA Carlsbad at 8 a.m. this morning driving past acres of pistachio orchards. Unfortunately it’s too early for them to be flowering because they are stunning pink in ... read more

Off to the city of Carlsbad this morning, leaving at 9 a.m. because I want to get an oil change. I know it’s a little early for it but I can’t wait until I get home as it would way over the mileage. And I had the time to do it today when I might not get that extra time for the rest of the way home. I never used a quick lube place before - new experience. It was like a beehive in there, mechanics doing everything. Now I feel at ease driving the rest of the way with fresh oil. Even getting to the caverns was an experience. The 7 mile road runs along the bottom of Walnut Canyon with twists and sharp turns until the road starts going sharply uphill. Most of the ... read more

Despite mentioning that I bumped up an hour crossing the New Mexico border, I forgot to change my Fitbit and the microwave clock - which are the two things I look at for time. So I left an hour later this morning than I planned. However the day went well & we arrived at 3:30 in Carlsbad KOA where we are staying for two nights. Overall the drive today was tedious and boring. “I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to get out of the rain”. Desert, desert and more desert. And this desert is mostly flat without anything interesting like Saguaro cactus or spring flowers. I crossed a mountain this morning without any issues and came back out on, guess what, the desert. The weather this morning reported ... read more

Off we go again today. This time to Sedona with full intention of hiking in Boynton Canyon within which is Subway Cave and a powerful vortex. I do believe that Sedona is the tourist destination of North American! Approaching the city is a wondrous site to behold - they don’t call it Red Rocks Country for no reason. The mountains and cliffs here are the most intense red I have seen thus far. Large buttes and sharp pinnacles jut into the clear azure sky. There are odd shapes and sizes at every turn. I found the turn for Dry Creek Road which leads out to Boynton Canyon. But so did everyone else in the country! There is not a parking spot to be found within miles but I am seeing shuttles going back and forth. So ... read more

It will be a more relaxed day today. We didn’t leave until close to noon to go to the train station in Clarkdale - about 40 minutes away. There I climbed aboard a luxuriously comfortable vintage passenger car. There was a good sized, good quality charcuterie box at each seat and they gave us a small cup of champagne to toast the trip. The track follows a historic trail along the river’s edge lined with towering red rock pinnacles, nearly 600 year old ancient Sinagua Indian ruins and over and though bridges and tunnels. The train moves quite slowly but steadily uphill. On the right side of the train it drops down to the Verde River which is flush with cottonwood, juniper and sycamore trees. The left side is the mountain slope with rock, prickly pear ... read more

Going on a bear hunt, gonna catch a big one! I hope I see more than bears at Out of Africa safari park. I was greeted by the nicest lady at the entrance. There was a long line up going in but she took me into the gift shop to get signed into the park and no one could have been more pleasant. My special safari tour was booked for 2 p.m. but she checked and there was one open spot for 11 a.m. so she signed me in for that one. Then another person came in and apologized but she had missed one person in another group and needed that one seat after all. No problem with me. I wasn’t expecting to get my tour until 2 any way. She took me out and showed ... read more

First thing it’s traditional coffee and doughnuts in the camp pavilion. Every Saturday morning the camp provides coffee and doughnuts for all the campers. It’s an opportunity for people to talk to others and find out where everyone comes from. I sat with a couple from Calgary who travel south regularly. It’s not really that far from Alberta to hop over the border and in a short time be in warmer weather - except for this year when it is much colder than normal. Then it’s off to Jerome. Jerome is at an altitude of over 5,000 feet and the road leading there is steep, narrow with switchbacks and hairpin turns. It gets a little frightening near the top because there’s only a small guardrail to keep you from making a quick trip to the bottom. ... read more

Heading back south again from Page towards Flagstaff. It is 14 degrees on the road and a glorious sunny day. When I am 40 miles from Flagstaff, I notice the temperature is sneaking down one degree at a time.By the time we reach Flagstaff, it has plummeted from 14 to 1 and guess what? It’s snowing in Flagstaff - does it ever stop snowing in Flagstaff? Do they have snow all summer? It’s not just a few flakes but a full snow storm. I am going to Williams for lunch which is 30 miles west of Flagstaff. Why, you ask, am I going to Williams? When I did my motorcycle trip in 2015 I stayed in Williams and enjoyed every minute of it. I wanted to go back for the memories and to have lunch in ... read more
