There are lots of activities that take place on this resort every day. Yesterday there was aerobics in the pool that I had fun taking part in and there was pool volleyball that I had fun watching. This morning some of us are going on a small shopping jaunt. The resort provides a bus and takes us into a small town about 40 minutes away. No requirement to buy but a chance to get to see the area in the daylight and see how the people live. When we arrived the other day it was pitch black at night. There are 3-4 small villages between the resort and the town and everyone waves and hollers “Bula!” as we drive by. Once in town we have 3 hours to wander and shop and find something to eat. ... read more

After a day from hell yesterday, today was pure heaven. After breakfast at the buffet in the dining room (our table was outside on the patio), most of us spent the whole day at the pool. I found a lounge in the shade where I could read until I got hot, then I went into the pool which was really refreshing but warm, then back to the lounge. And repeat and repeat. I met a nice lady from Newcastle, Australia and we spent most of the day talking together. She was here with her son, his wife and three grandchildren. At about 4 pm, I walked along the edge of the beach - the tide was out- just because I needed to move off that lounge. That’s where I saw the little foal trying to catch ... read more

No blog yesterday as it was not the greatest day. We were travelling all day, leaving our hotel at 8:30 a.m. and going to the Queenstown airport for a flight to Auckland. It’s not a very long flight but, of course, early check in is required and then you sit and wait for your flight. On arrival in Auckland, we had to take a shuttle bus from the local terminal to the International terminal. It was easy enough to find the Air Fiji check in and get through that. However, the next step was horrendous. After walking a very long way to find the gates, there were hundreds of people lined up to go through Fiji security. Our plane was boarding in a few minutes and we were at the back of the lines. I convinced ... read more

Back to Queenstown for our final day in New Zealand. I can’t believe how fast this time has passed by and how much we have seen and done. But the vacay isn’t over yet! There’s still Fiji to come. On arrival back in Queenstown, the bus dropped us at the Harbour front to go find our own lunch. Jane, Anne & I sat on a bench and ate cheese, crackers and salami and then wandered around the pedestrian shopping mall until it was time for us to check into the hotel (same one we stayed at a couple of days ago but different rooms this time). Going out for a short walk - 6 kms later we struggled back up the “Torture Hill” from the downtown. But what a beautiful walk we had around the headland ... read more

Moving from Queenstown to Te Anau today only takes a couple of hours drive. The landscape we passed through was mostly pasture housing some cows, red deer farms and millions of sheep! I never saw soooo many sheep. It should be on every menu in every restaurant. I have to admit that the lamb shank we had in the very first hotel we stayed in was super delicious. Along the roadsides, wild yellow lupines and gorse grow in profusion. Lupines are not a problem, but gorse is as it is highly invasive. We came across an area of native tussuck grass which early settlers tried to eradicate but ended up causing erosion problems. They wanted to eradicate it because they were trying to establish pasture for sheep. Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park ... read more

What an adventure we had this morning! We all piled into a jet boat and went white water rafting up and down the river, through the rapids and doing 360 spins. Anne & I were screaming & squealing with laughter. A couple of times we screamed because we came within a foot of cliffs of the river canyon and thought we were going to crash. But the driver was experienced and she knew what she was doing. Then it was time for lunch at The Stoaker Room. We were in an outside tent at a long banquet style table with birds flying around inside looking for handouts. The food is slow cooked/smoked in oak barrels and then served on long curved barrel staves. First we had fresh baked bread with olive oil and roasted red pepper ... read more

Here we go again! It isn’t raining, believe it or not! There is blue sky and we can see the snow capped mountains in the distance. Because it’s fairly clear we are able to get a spectacular view of Fox Glacier which is bigger than Franz Josef glacier. Yesterday there was no view of Fox because of widespread mist and rain. Some interesting things about NZ: there are metal bands part way up each hydro pole. These are to prevent the possums from climbing up and chewing on the wires; possums are different than opossums in N. America. They are a cat sized marsupial with a long bushy tail introduced to NZ for the fur trade. The fur of possums is very soft and warm; there are multicoloured lupines and foxgloves growing wild everywhere; all the ... read more

It’s still raining & will be a few more days. This is a tropical rain so it pours hard, eases off a little and then pours hard again and is never ending! Our schedule was alternated slightly so that we drove to Lake Matheson and Fox Glacier this morning instead of tomorrow morning. It was a trip up and over the mountain with hair pin turns and winding roads. There was a sign for a Kiwi crossing which I missed photographing. It’s the first one I have seen. One of our group went for a walk yesterday on one of the trails and snapped a photo of an alpine deer - beautiful picture. Our driver took us down a little country road through pasture land that had herds of healthy beef cows and lots of local ... read more

A day in the rain in the alpine rainforest. Even though there is a steady rain fall, we are all excited to be walking to the the view point for the Franz Josef glacier. We have an eco guide who is an excellent speaker & teacher about glaciologist, geology, geomorphology, flora and fauna, local legends and history. He points out interesting plants, tiny orchids and ferns. Even though this is a West Coast rainforest it is alpine so there are no exotic flowers but dainty little treasures on the forest floor. New Zealand = ferns! Their national symbol is a fern frond. There must be millions of different types of ferns: dark green ferns, light green ferns, silver, ferns, yellow ferns, red ferns, maroon ferns, black ferns, brown ferns, tiny ferns, monster ferns, short ferns, tall ... read more

An early start today to catch the Tranz Alpine railway trip through the mountains to Arthur’s Pass where our coach will pick us up. The train runs through Canterbury plains farmland but always climbing uphill and into the heart of the mighty Southern Alps. There are vast fields with herds of cows, flocks of sheep and even deer farms. We travel across towering viaducts, through spectacular gorges and river valleys and into the lush forest of Arthurs Pass National Park. After reboarding our coach, we roll on through the snow capped mountains, and descend into the lush rainforests of Westland travelling south along the West Coast to Hokitika. At Hokitika, we have only 1 3/4 hr of free time. We head immediately to the beach to put our feet into the Tasman Sea. This has become ... read more
