Our ship Egil sailed through the night and arrived in Komarom, Hungary. This is as far as we can sail on the Danube because the water level is so very low. We were bussed into Budapest leaving at 8:30 this morning (about one hour drive). Arriving in Buda, we crossed the one of the many bridges spanning the Danube into Pest. The bus toured us around all the important area of Pest: Heroes Square, Parliament Buiildings, Iron Shoes monument, largest Jewish synagogue, Opera House, etc. First disembarkation was to walk over to Heroes Square. There are 14 statues - seven chieftains of the Magyar plus seven other important leaders. The tall column in the centre is Archangel Gabriel and is the Millennium Monument to commemorate the 1,000 years since conquest of the Carpathian area. We see ... read more

We have the morning free! Hopefully I can sleep in past 5 a.m. This afternoon we go to hear the Vienna Boys Choir. There was some not so good news. The water level of the Danube is low enough that we won’t be able to sail right into Budapest. We will be stopping about one hour away and being bussed into our hotel there. Not a big deal, nothing to spoil our vacation. We talked to the captain later in the morning and the poor man was upset about this development. We reassured him that we weren’t bothered by something that is beyond all of of our control and we make the best of it. He thanked us for being understanding. I would like to talk about the staff on this ship. I have learned lots ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna October 11th 2023

Austria’s capital of Vienna is the City of Waltzes and Europe’s centre of classic music. Strauss and Mozart composed many of their finest music here. The wide boulevard circling the Inner City is lined with Baroque, neo-Renaissance, Gothic-Romanesque and other magnificent structures from the Hofburg Palace to the Vienna State Opera. They are grand and highly ornamented buildings many topped with tall statues of, I assume, famous people. Impressive massive statues are in every open space, some with fountains. Coffee houses are the order of the day, in fact some 2,400 of them. Locals gather for a delicious beverage and hours of social time. You are encouraged to stay as long as you want and enjoy your time there. First we are treated to a city tour on our bus which for me is completely boring ... read more

Overnight we have changed countries. I have been up since 5:30 a.m. sitting in the lounge drinking coffee. The ceiling to floor windows reveal nothing in the dark unless we pass a populated area and there are lights on the shore. Occasionally the ship slows down as she passes under a bridge or next to another ship. Sometimes the edge of the ship is very close to the bridge supports but we have an excellent captain who knows what he’s doing. I looked up once and was looking into a lighted room on another ship but no sign of anyone up. Now it is 7:15 a.m. and starting to lighten up. I can now see houses on the shore. Soon we will be going up on the top deck to see the promised scenery of Wachou ... read more

The ship has finally sailed! At 6:30 this morning we started down the Danube River towards Passau. I was having coffee on our little veranda when she started to move. How beautiful it was watching the lights on the shoreline glide past in the dim pre-morning. It wasn’t very far to Passau and the ship spun around in the middle of the river so we could disembark onto the Old Town side. Following a delicious buffet breakfast, off we went on a guided walking tour. I love the audio receivers because I wear my headphones to hear the guide clearly without any background noise. Old Passau isn’t very big but it sure is old. It was founded 2,000 years ago by the Romans but archeological excavations found artifacts that were considerably older. In pre-historic times it ... read more

I will start today to telling you about our entertainment in the lounge last night. There were three professional opera singers/actors and a skilled pianist to accompany them. Their performances were absolutely stunning and they made it even more entertaining by adding humour to their singing. They were interactive with the audience and everyone was impressed with them. Early start today at 8 a.m. on the bus to take us back to Regensburg. As I mentioned before the water level was too low for the ship to start the tour in Regensburg so we were bussed back to Regensburg for our tour. There were several different group guides to choose from and I truly believe we chose the best one. A young woman in traditional costume who was animated and enthusiastic about her job. Jennifer spoke ... read more

The travel day is always uneventful, long and uncomfortable. Our first adventure in Toronto airport was the automatic check in machines wouldn’t print our baggage tags. We kept trying different machines and every time we received another boarding pass but no luggage tags. Finally we had to get in a long line to have assistance. While we were waiting in line, we observed three different parties who were denied entry on the plane. Not sure why - seemed to have something to do with their passports, but I felt bad for them. After purchasing airline tickets, waiting in line for a long time to be told you couldn’t get on the plane must have been very disappointing for them. Likely they had family or friends waiting for them at their destination. The flight was typical with ... read more

My feet have become itchy again and I’m off on a new adventure. Oct. 6 I leave on the big ol’ jet plane from Toronto headed for Munich to meet up with a Viking river cruise ship. My cruise companion is Anne Smith (Mary Anne Smith - no relation). Our departure on the Danube actually leaves from Regensburg and winds its way through Germany, Austria and eventually into Hungary. I am looking forward to parking my suitcase and not having to move it until the end of the cruise. That will be a nice change from the touring I have done in the past where we move every day or two to a new location requiring the packing up of the suitcase and setting it out for the bus. This way the ship moves and takes ... read more

It’s been an exciting and trying two days. Yesterday our goal was to get to Shakamak State Park (where we stayed on the way down). We were sitting in the sun having a beer (me, not Malika) when the park ranger pulls into my site. He tells me that there is a severe weather/tornado warning for that area and where I should go if it should strike. He stressed that I would need to get out of the park away from the trees. The thunderstorms were expected to start in the night. So I slept with the window by my bed open so I would see or hear anything if the weather should change and I needed to get out quick. Nothing happened in the night but I got up early and was leaving at 7:30 ... read more
