OK, I admit this may be a 'smart ass' toned blog entry, but everyone reading this knows me... so, here it goes: Folks from across the pond coming to Europe who insist on going into a store and not comprehending why they won't take your US dollars... simple question... will you take Pesos? Thank you. OK.. I can't just stop. I heard some REALLY mind boggling comments on my last trip on the Rhine from people who really might want to consider international travel. 1. "My bank told me NOT to take my ATM card with me to Europe because it could be stolen." (This Einstein also did not bring any pin numbers for his credit card and was completely unable to get any cash anywhere). He thought he could use US dollars everywhere. My response: ... read more

They say that a fish stinks from the head down and yet I know that within many organisations, it's not so often that the head takes responsibility for its body (unless of course, it's bonus time.) Why don't we have sayings for the head when the body smells fresh and sweet and like a beautiful perfume? That's how I look at my relationship with Ama Waterways. A few years back when I started looking around to determine which line I would like to use for my river cruise trips, I stumbled upon Ama. Never heard of them? You don't get an acre of forest of promos from them like Viking sends out? Well, there's good reason that Ama doesn't fell a forest each year simply to fill their ships; they have one of the best repeat ... read more

I consider myself an extremely lucky traveler. Being married to a Lufthansa flight attendant had its privileges over the years and I've been lucky to have done some ridiculously extravagant things since meeting 'him': like flown from my home in Germany to Singapore for a quick sunny weekend get away during an overly cold January or off to Philadelphia for my "One Night Only Tour" to celebrate one of my birthdays. I've also enjoyed lengthy journeys to the US for 5-6 week stretches where I could/can immerse myself back into my former existences in Philadelphia and Central Florida, taken extended cruises through the Caribbean and Europe, and treks through Africa and China. For someone whose life goal at 16 was "to see and live in as many places as possible" I am well on my ... read more

Today I begin the first day of a 5 week long journey that will take me from Amsterdam to Basel, through Paris & Provence, and ultimately reaching Barcelona and stopping at many, many points in between. I am either the luckiest person on the planet right now or the absolute most insane. I'll leave the result up to you, but I know which way I'm leaning. Almost two years in the making, this journey is starting off like the whirlwind which seems to have become the larger hurricane of my travel life. There is so much turmoil in our world today, I am very happy to do something that brings people happiness and fun. I am hugely excited at how it all keeps developing; most of all because I am meeting incredible people around this planet ... read more

Oh my poor starving readers. I really am crap at this blog thing, as I've said before. I just finished an incredibly interesting and exciting summer tour season in Warnemünde, trained a new guide, was written about by Rick Steves as the tour to take in Warnemünde in his new book 'Cruising Northern Europe' (released July 20, 2013) and I am about to embark on a 5 week journey with folks from the Friends of Dave Universe. I also sold my apartment in Warnemünde, moved to Berlin, found a smaller apartment in Warnemünde (bought it) and am juggling so many things. I really, really need an assistant. I leave on Thursday for Amsterdam... I will scout out some fun stuff for my arriving buds and organize their Welcome packets and just enjoy this city that I ... read more

I am the world’s WORST blogger. It’s not because I’m a crap writer who can’t put two words together or because I never go anywhere worth writing about. Mostly, it’s because I can never stop for 5 seconds and put pen to paper... or in this case finger to keyboard. To be a good blogger, one has to actually sit down and take the time to put words to paper and I am literally crap at that. I’ve also been a Facebook traitor. The phrase a picture is worth a thousand words is a Godsend to people on the go like me. I’ve spent the past couple of years faithfully uploading pics of my travels and I am ashamed that I never took the time to add the words! Time to change that! I have such ... read more

Amsterdam can be an intimidating city at first. It is fast paced. It is loud. It can be a bit dirty and trashy and bawdy: it can also be sleazy if you turn down the right alley. It is bars and coffee shops and pubs and cafes and smoke and music and noise. It’s shops and trade without end. It’s food stalls and smells and crowds and people and an occasional person that less sensitive people might refer to as a “freak”. It’s gables and bridges and cobblestones and streets and gentle bends. It’s eager tourists and gruff locals and friendly smiles and stares off into space. But it is so much more than that... The common denominator in Amsterdam is fun and the majority of the people crowding the streets are in good moods and ... read more

In 2009 we visited Stockholm and Copenhagen on our Baltic Cruise... I made a few notes that I have shared with others since then to help them start their planning for their own visit. I am reprinting it here, but advise you to simply use this a starting point for your own plans. Some things may have changed. Feel free to check out my Stockholm pictures at my Facebook page! REPRINTED FROM AN EMAIL TO MY TOUR FRIENDS: This “Cruise Tips” will be about 2 of your ports: Copenhagen and Stockholm; both are majorly impressive, both are easily navigable, and both have ties to your stop in Warnemünde which you will learn about during your tour with me. These tips are from our trip on the Constellation last year, so they are coming from that viewpoint ... read more

Something I really, really like about cruising with Ama Waterways is how they conduct their tours. Every stop along the way will have amazing things to see and Ama's tours are designed to offer differing types of guests, different ways to tour. Ama includes the majority of their tours in the price of your cruise, although they do have a few optional tours to choose from. A general sightseeing tour is provided in every city you stop in and Ama has developed 3 different programs (for most of their stops) which allow you to choose between the normal pace tours which show you everything, a faster option for those that want the highlights but would like more time to explore on their own, and the slower paced tours for those with mobility issues or who simply ... read more

Hey there Cruise Friends! I have gotten some questions lately about using ATM & credit cards here in Europe so I thought I would send my advice to everyone. You may know this already, but for those that are wondering I hope this will be one less thing you have to worry about. One of my favorite things about living in the EU since the changeover to the Euro is that traveling has become increasingly easy when it comes to currency. Your Baltic trip however, will bring you to countries that use Danish Kroner, Swedish Kroner, Rubles (not needed) and the Euro; some may even need British pounds... so it begs the question, what do I do about cash? The days of using traveler's checks are long gone... I can't think of a single place in ... read more
