South America » Peru » Ica » Ballestas Islands April 10th 2013

10/04 to 11/04/13: Pisco and the Ballestas islands Pisco has been badly touched by the 2007 earthquake and the re-build just started. One can still witness broken homes, empty spaces, and left cathedral. The main cathedral on the main Plaza is still there but a new church has been build next to it. The town itself offers nothing to the tourist but travel agencies will sell you half-day tour to the islands Ballestas part of the Paracas Reserve Park. On a 2 hours boat ride, you will see the Paracas Candelabra, also called the Candelabra of the Andes, is a well-known prehistoric geoglyph - created on the sand by the Paracas people more than 2000 year ago. Like the Nasca Lines, there is a lot of theories about the meaning of the sign. On the rocks, ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina April 7th 2013

07/04 to 09/04/13: Huacachina: The Oasis in the desert near Ica. Huacachina is a village in the Ica Region, in southwestern Peru. It is located in the Ica Province, near the city of Ica in the Ica District. The oasis features on the back of the 50 Nuevo Sol note. Huacachina is built around a small natural lake in the desert. Called the "oasis of America," it serves as a resort for local families from the nearby city of Ica, and increasingly as an attraction for tourists drawn by the sports of sandboarding and taking dune buggy rides on sand dunes that stretch several hundred feet high (we didn't do it). Legend holds that the lagoon was created when a beautiful native princess was apprehended at her bath by a young hunter. She fled, leaving the ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca » Nazca Lines April 5th 2013

05/04 - Nazca Lines We used Cruz del Sur for the 13 hours trip Cuzco - Nazca and it was the best bus company ever tested. Digital screen on board, internet and Facebook available when cell-phone signal was available, games, movies, like on a plane. We also had a diner (you have the choice between meat or vegetarian when you book your ticket), and a small breakfast which was welcome. The seats are larger and more comfortable than in any other bus company we have been using so far. They offer a little cushion and a cover for the night. Cemetery of Chauchilla: We took the tour with our hostel Brabant to visit the Cemetery of Chauchilla where mummies have been found only 50 years ago. The site has been racked by unrespectful people in search ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu April 1st 2013

Machu Picchu: 1 night and 2 days in Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu Pueblo is enough. We took the Perurail which offer a Panoramic view. There is lots of places to stay once arrived. Aguas Calientes offers also hot springs (10 Soles) for those with tired legs. We woke up early to catch the first bus to Machu Picchu at 5.30 am. It takes 30 min to arrive to this wonderful Lost City. It was wet, foggy, misty but still fantastic and eye-catching. Brief History: Machu Picchu has in fact been discovered first in 1874 by a German cartographer. Hiram Bingham rediscovered it in 1911. Machu Picchu means "Old Mountain" and the site is referred as "the Lost City of The Inkas". Among with Saqsaywaman, it is a highlight of the imperial Incan culture and serves ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana March 25th 2013

25/03 to 26/03 - Copacabana: As the main road from La Paz to Copa was blocked (farmers, military, etc... who knows), we had to go through the border town Desaguero, then through Peru for 1 hour and out at Yuynguyo for re-entering Bolivia at Kasani where we found no taxi due to the strike and had to take a slow boat to cross the Lake Titicaca to finally arrive at Copacabana where we wanted to take a boat to the famous Isla del Sol. This never happened as the strike did continue for few days. We only hike the Cerro Calvario and admire the view and the sunset from the top.(3966m) Copacabana is a famous religious city specially during the Semana Santa (Easter week). Locals and people from La Paz come for a pelgrinage during this ... read more

21/03 to 24/03/13 - La Paz: The highest Capital in the world ! at 3660 m above sea level and it always goes up ! We did one of the scariest bike ride. We bike through the most dangerous road in the world and we survived ! The landscape is great and the experience is great. We started at Cumbre and went down the main road for 1 hour (Marie was the last one , as she was scared of the speed !). Then started a 2 hour ride on a rocky road between the edge and the mountain, so no escape, if you go too quickly it's either scratching yourself in the mountain or getting over the edge. A lot of people have died on this road, this is no joke! We went through little ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi March 17th 2013

17/03 to 20/03/13 - Potosi: The highlight of this stop was to do the Mine Tour at Cerro Rico Mountain. We used the company Big Deal Tours. They used to be miners themselves and are very straightforward. Every company conducting those type of tour sell the fact that they give a pourcentage to the miners but this is not true. Nobody does. We stopped first at a miner shop to buy juice and coca leaves for the miners we will encounter inside the mine, and some dynamite for the end! Our guide Pedro was experienced and funny. We visited a processing room for the minerals and then put some protection clothes, helmet and boots before entering the beast. The walk is around 3 hours going through narrow tunnels, toxic stalactites, up the ladder with a potent ... read more

12/03 to 18/03/13 - Tupiza - Salar de Uyuni We started our tour for Salar de Uyuni: 4 days trip / 3 nights with Alessandro Adventure Travel. We paid a bit more than through other agencies but the difference was in the fact that we weren't following other fellow travelers or at the same place than other jeeps. The places we went to were incredible and the landscape was always changing. 1st day: We started a 8.00am. We were 2 couples in the Jeep, our guide and driver Zolando and our great cook Noemie. We pass through the Valley El Sillar with natural red rock formation, San Antonio Ruins which is a nice place made of stone and used to be a miners villages, we saw the Morejon lake at 4850m about see level and spend ... read more
