Himachal Pradesh: The journey by bus has been challenging. It is difficult to sleep when your bus is passing through narrow roads, driving by night towards the mountain and facing some traffic jam at 2am! Go for a good Volvo AC bus managed by a well-rated company as the journey is bouncy and you need some comfort. This region is spectacular with mountains views and river valleys. Famous for trekking, rafting, paraglading and skiing if you visit around March. We found some traditional villages where people bring up food and others items on their back towards the hill village. The homes are made in wood, stone and carving wood around the windows. Animals have their litter by the entrance of the house. On the upper-level will be the main living area with the kitchen and on ... read more

New Delhi We stopped one night in New Delhi after a 32 hour train journey from Goa and before a 15 hour bus journey to our next destination: Manali - Himachal Pradesh. We did take a quick wander around Delhi during the day & to say the least we hated the noisy dirty grim city with a deep passion... We booking a train using the government website and Cleartrip which was relatively easy. We advice to use 2AC class as it will allow you to have a bed in a 4 compartments. Curtains blocked the others to spy on you and food/drink service operate on the train. Guys pass through the carriage every...5 min to sell cheese sandwich, samosa, tomato soup, crisps and cookies, tea, water, coffee. (It is nice to know people are concerned about your ... read more

GOA: This old Portuguese enclave used to be 15 years ago the place to be for a great party nowadays when you arrived low season (as we did), there is no more. 23/08 to 28/08 /12: Palolem We arrived low-season therefore we found closed guesthouse. They will start again in late October. Nevertheless we enjoyed a good 2 days of sun and exploring followed by 3 days of Monsoon. The streets transformed themselves in rivers ! It was great to feel the intensity of the monsoon rains...! We met some lovely people in Palolem (from UK & France & we hope to see the French couple (Charlie & Fanny) in Paris in May....) There is two nice beaches further along. You do get some hawkers trying to sell jelleweries (self-made!?) but to be honest nothing original ... read more

Karnataka We stop by Bangalore on our way to Hampi (only briefly - it is not a nice place - it's a big dusty noisy and unappealing city, we arrived at night and left immediately the next day!!) The bus journey from Trichy to Bangalore is 8 hours. We took a private company KPN. The rickshaw bring us to a recommended place (by him). Some rickshaw drivers can be trusted but you have to get lucky. Most will recommend a hotel who will give them a commission for bringing customer and you will see the price of your room increase! Bangalore is just a short stop for our next destination: Hampi. 16/08 to 22/08 : Hampi We embarked on Hampi Island (Viripur Gadi) to settle down at Shanti Guesthouse for few days before moving to Shiva Guesthouse ... read more

Tamil Nadu: Famous for his Temples, devotees and poetry. 09/08 : arrival in Chennai for 2 nights. Been sick on our way into the country, we didn't manage to see Chennai - nevertheless nothing missed as this big city is not inviting because of his chaos, dust, and hot weather. 11/08 and 12/08: Pondicherry - Puducherry - Pondy: the French flavoured Tamil town. What is left by the frenchies is some colonial houses and some arts. The streets on the french side start with the typical "Rue" instead of street and names can change from the beginning to the end. There is a distinctive difference in the cleanless of the street as soon as you enter the french corner. We stayed at Villa Labourdonnais - owned by a french man Gerard Louis who lives in india ... read more

30/07 to 09/08: Bangkok We are back to Bangkok for a couple of days. We stayed at Baan Hualampong Guesthouse nearby the central train station which we arrived from Malaysia. The surroundings are very nice and cosy - just 1 minute walk from the main street but so peaceful and quiet and green. We meet with Leon a Dutch guy leaving in Chiang Mai and working in Thailand as a journalist and hoping to get a house in a little paradise ( we like to keep it secret). The man is an interesting and misterious guy and has a great life story . We also met with Gillian, from Edinburgh. We shared our travels'experience and also gain some advice for India and places to stay. 02/08 to 05/08: Koh Samet As planned we meet up with ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town July 30th 2012

As we didn't like Taman Negara we travelled to Georgetown at night by bus. We left Temeloh at 22h and arrived in Georgetown around 5h30am. We had already an address where to stay and shared a taxi with an italian couple. We decided to spend our last week in Malaysia in Georgetown as it is a city full of history and positive energies. We spend some days discovering the city centre - Penang is linked to the Peninsular Malaysia via the longest bridge in Asia as well as the oldest cross-channel ferry service in the country which we took to go to Butterworth station where our night train will bring us to Thailand-Bangkok our next destination before heading to India. Georgetown is an elegant colonial city, mixing modern skyscrapers and unique old city centre, declared a ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Taman Negara National Park July 21st 2012

21-07: journey by bus to Taman Negara via Jerantut and Temeloh. We planned to stay there for few days and trek into the jungle but on the way to Taman Negara we discovered with horror that the Palm oil industry has destroyed the landscape and cut some of the jungle. We also didn't feel the place. The locals seem to take advantage of the tourist and we didn't feel comfortable staying here. The room we find wasn't great with an uncomfortable bed which didn't help to bring our good mood back. We felt cheated and didn't want to participate to this false industry. The environmental issues are important in Malaysia and lodging is believed to have destroyed 60% of the country's rainforest. Of course it does generate some good money! The palm-tree plantation is the other ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Melaka » Melaka City July 20th 2012

We arrived on Peninsular Malaysia and started our trip up north with Kuala Lumpur again! We were happy to be reunited with this city as we did feel at easy and a bit like at home. It is the city feeling, we guess! We arrived in KL after 3 h delayed at the airport from Kota Kinabalu. We stayed at Submarine guesthouse - Hostel recommended by a Dutch family we met at Sepilok. Located nearby the Central market so very central and near Chinatown. On the next day we did a day-trip to Melaka: only 2 hours by bus. Melaka is a very artistic place, very colourful and historical. Founded by a Hindu prince, protected by the Chinese then dominated by the Portuguese and then the Dutch and finally ceded to the British in 1795. There ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu July 10th 2012

The journey in bus is about 5 hours from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu. KK - Jesselton is based on British settlement. The old name Jesselton comes from Sir Charles jessel, the Vice-Chairman of the British North Borneo Chartered Company (1899) (Independant Company) To liberate North Borneo from the Japanese during the WWII, the Allied forces bombed and completely destroyed Jesselton leaving only the Sabah tourism building, the Atkinson Tower and the former Lands and Survey building. The large cost of rebuilding pushed the Chartered Company to sell to the British Government. North Borneo was under British protectorate from 1882 to 1946. After the war it became a crown colony of Great Britain from 1946 to 1963: independance year - Jesselton was renamed Kota Kinabalu on September 1968 for the Mount Kinabalu - name coming from the ... read more
