France has never really appealed to me as a country to visit, yet I've seen some beautiful photos online of different parts of the country. I've heard reviews that you must be good at speaking French and not many people will speak English may have had some influence in me not wanting to explore this European country. A poor excuse since France is a neighbour to the UK making a daytrip possible. However, I decided to give France a try on my return from Belgium since I needed to catch a ferry back home from Dunkirk. My manager at work suggested I take a look at Lille, as its only about 80km away from Dunkirk. I found a hotel outside of the city centre with free parking and good motorway connections, and it was only a ... read more

Brussels I returned back to Brussels with a tight itinerary planned as was only staying for the one night. Luckily the sunny weather continued as I enjoyed walking around the capital. I arrived in Brussels early to ensure I got to see as much as I could possibly fit in within one day. I first stopped off at the Atomium, which was built for the 1958 World Fair. I did not know this before my visit, but discovered that this was Brussels most famous landmark structure. The Atomium was never intended to be a permanent structure but stayed after proving to be a very popular attraction. The Atomium has 9 spheres and each one is 60ft in diameter. The spheres are linked together with escalators and stairs, with 5 of the spheres containing exhibition rooms and ... read more

My journey from Luxembourg to Antwerp was nearly three hours and I was keen to stop off somewhere on the way to explore and break up the journey. I decided to take up Stefano's suggestion with visiting Liege. Finding a parking space in the centre of Liege is apparently a nightmare and expensive. I took Stefano's advise of parking outside of the centre and enjoyed a long but fairly pleasant walk along the Meuse River with the warmth of the sun shining down on me, bright blue skies and not a cloud in sight... travelling at it's finest. The city centre of Liege was very busy with many local people and felt like there was not a tourist in sight, with the exception of myself. I had people talking to me in French on the street, ... read more

Europe » Luxembourg » Vianden September 7th 2015

When researching about Luxembourg, I discovered there was a small place called Vianden that was north of Luxembourg City and close to the German border. The first photo I saw of Vianden when researching was this magnificent castle on a rock, surrounded by greenery, a river and lots of houses. I was taken aback by this beautiful, peaceful looking town and there was no way that I was going to miss the opportunity to visit this place. My guidebook recommended doing 'A Tour of Petite Suisse Luxembourgeoise' with the Petite Suisse meaning Little Switzerland. The book recommended starting at a small town called Echternach and ending at Vianden via Petite Suisse Luxembourgeoise. The route is about 22 miles (35 km) and will take at least half a day by car or a whole day by foot. ... read more

I was really looking forward to visiting Luxembourg because I was going to be hosted for 4 nights by Stefano a guy who I met through Couchsurfing and we already got to meet one time he was visiting London so I knew he was genuine and we got on really well. I was excited by the fact that I'd be visiting a country I had not visited before; country number 28! the rules are simple a friend recently told me, you have to at least visit the same number of countries as your age or more. That means I am 3 countries behind, so I better get planning my next couple of trips! As soon as I arrived in Luxembourg City, Stefano made me feel very welcome. He wanted to ensure my car was parked safely ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels September 4th 2015

Originally I had planned to stay in Brussels for two consecutive days but I had to rearrange my itinerary slightly to fit in my trip to Luxembourg. I could have easily moved my couple of days in Brussels to the following week, but faced the dilemma of missing the annual Belgian Beer Festival and I was really looking forward to this so I decided to do one of the two days and revisit Brussels the following week. Brussels is the capital of Belgium and I knew driving my car into this large city would most probably be stressful and expensive. I did some research and discovered that there was a free car park on the outskirts of the capital next to the metro station called Ceria. The Ceria metro station is only 20 minutes away from ... read more

Europe » Belgium » East Flanders » Gent September 3rd 2015

When asking locals about the best place to visit in Belgium everyone told me that Ghent was their favourite location. The response was "just as beautiful and medieval as Bruges but without all the tourists". It became apparent to me that Ghent was over-shadowed by it's neighbour Bruges. My car journey from Bruges to Ghent was a short 35 miles drive down the E40. I did my research online before my trip and discovered that parking was expensive in the city centre and everyone uses the trams. Ghent has the best tram transportation in the whole of Belgium. I learnt that there was a park and ride with ample of free parking on the outskirts of the city, the tram station is called Flanders Expo and takes about 20 minutes to get you into the centre. ... read more

I was really excited about visiting Bruges having seen many photos of this medieval fairytale looking place, as well as hearing great reviews from family and friends. I can honestly say that my excitement for visiting this place did not end up with disappointment and would say that Bruges is right up there in my all-time top 5 favourites cities. Before visiting Bruges, I did not know too much about it, except that it was surrounded by meandering canals and lined with medieval buildings. I discovered that Bruges was the hub of trade in the 13th century with other European countries and learnt that the city became the world's first tourist destination in the late 19th century. Upon entering the 13th century markt, I found the Historium Brugge. This attraction is very popular with tourists as ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Ypres August 30th 2015

I was awake early after my restless night of camping out in the storm and a good job too as my plan was to tour around the World War I battlefields so I would need plenty of time to explore. My Eyewitness Travel guide recommended to see everything within two days, but as I only had one day, I chose my key interests carefully. My guidebook recommended starting at Diksmuide and driving down towards Ypres, or Ieper to the locals! Local people that I spoke to recommended finishing my day at Ypres because of the last post, played by buglers at Menin Gate, in memory of the 55,000 missing commonwealth soldiers. The last post is played at 8pm but I decided that I didn't want to drive around Belgium when getting late and also wanted to ... read more

Money is a bit tight for 2015 with buying a house so plans to visit Peru have been put on hold. But a year without any travelling? Surely I couldn't possibly manage that! I had some money saved and decided that I'd like to visit Belgium. The British pound had been strong against the Euro prior to the Greek bailout so I got planning my itinerary and accommodation quickly. Also, I had discovered a site called Couchsurfing and had managed to arrange a few nights of being hosted for free. As a supermarket called Tesco says "every little helps" especially when travelling on a tight budget. With Belgium being so close to the UK, I decided that I'd be able to see more locations by taking my car. I drove my car to the port of ... read more
