Another early start as we had a long day ahead. Our first stop was at a massive waterfall not far from Palenque I believe. Some of the group jumped into the lake, but I wasn’t in the mood for it, to be honest, I was feeling a bit grumpy from sleeping in the jungle for two nights. Anyway I decided to walk behind the waterfall which was pretty amazing and I ended up banging my head on a rock, so that will teach me for being grumpy! After the waterfall our next stop was Agua Azul, but before we got to Agua Azul, our mini bus got a flat tyre and we must have waited there for about an hour while our coach driver got some assistance. Local children kept checking us out and talking to ... read more

We spent two nights at a hotel which is basically in the jungle. The room is a wooden hut and I have had the pleasure of finding a huge spider and mouse in my room, not nice. Although the spider bugged me more than the mouse did. One of the highlights of sleeping in a wooden hut is seeing and hearing monkeys outside my room. The monkeys make a loud jaguar sound which is to do with their territory. After an 8 hour bus journey from Merida to Palenque the day before and a restless night sleep with the monkeys and creepy crawlies, we had to get up early to see the Mayan ruins of Palenque. It was great to be able to walk up and down the ruins as you’re not allowed to do this ... read more

We all had to get up early to do the cenotes excursion and everyone in the group wanted to do this. There are 14 of us in total within the group; 5 Australians, 4 Brits (including me) 1 American and 4 Belgium’s. It is a good mix and I am starting to feel like I am getting to know everyone. The first cenotes we visited we were unable to swim in it as it was closed off, but we were able to take some good photos and also got to see some Mayan villages. I took a picture of this Mayan lady who kept smiling and she seemed surprised that I wanted a photo of her. Anyway I gave her a 10 peso tip and this seemed to make her very happy. I haven’t done a blog for day 8 but basically I spent the day by relaxing in Cancun, where I chilled by the hotel’s swimming pool and visited a nearby beach. In the evening I met my Chief Experience Officer (CEO) & fellow trekkers for the first time as I am now starting my 22 day G Adventures trip. Anyway, we had to get up early to get to Chichen Itza which was a 3 hour coach journey from Cancun and we used the ADO bus service. Their coaches are really comfortable, which made it easy to have a nap. The coaches do get quite cold with the aircon, so I’m glad I took my fleece jacket with me. When arrived at Chichen Itza, one of the most famous Mayan sites, we had an English speaker ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Isla Mujeres July 5th 2013

When I first woke up I felt really sick. I started to feel slightly ill before leaving the states and it got worse when I got to Mexico. I really wanted to go to Isla Mujeres but felt so rough. Anyway, I dosed myself up with Paracetamol tablets and decided to go for it. I got a taxi from my hotel to the ferry and was over in Isla Mujeres within 15 minutes. When I first got to the island, I decided to walk around and explore, and felt like I was the only tourist on there, but never felt unsafe. After about an hour or so, I decided to do a boat tour which involved 3 different snorkelling locations, seeing a turtle farm and having lunch. The snorkelling was the best I have been on ... read more

My last full day in New York so Fi and myself went back to Rocco’s for a coffee and slice of cheesecake. I’ve decided that Rocco’s is the best coffee shop in NYC; it has so many different types of coffee (hot or cold) with lots of flavoured syrups. I definitely recommend this as a place to visit on a trip to NYC. After coffee, Fi took me to Central Park where she then needed to leave me and meant that I’d have to explore alone. Not long after starting to walk around the park, the heavens opened and there was a thunderstorm, luckily I found some shelter and I waited for the storm to pass by. The storm lasted about an hour and afterwards the Sun came out and it was really hot. I walked ... read more

Fi and I decided today that it would be good to see a different part of New York, so we took the metro to Coney Island. The metro took quite a while to get us to Coney Island from Manhattan as we had about 17 stops, but we were there within the hour. As we got to Coney Island, the thick heavy cloud broke up and the Sun came out. We chilled on the beach and I had an ice cold coffee. We then walked along the sea front and looked at some of the mini theme park rides and I got a hot dog for lunch. There are quite a few different rides to go on, however some of them look quite dated and one was swaying from side to side. After having some lunch, ... read more

I spent most of the day traveling around New York on my own as Fi had to go into work. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great as it was raining so I had to change a few plans, luckily it was light rain so I didnt need to get my waterproof coat out as it was really muggy. I started off at Macy's department store. I walked around a few floors and looked at the men's clothing before getting bored, but at least I can say I've been there. I then walked up 5th Avenue to the New York Library. 5th Avenue is fantasic for shopping as it has so many shops, there are quite a lot of brands that we have back in the UK. The designer clothes are the same amounts as UK but as ... read more

Fi kindly put together a list of all the things to see in New York and arranged them so that I could see everything in order of locations. We started the morning in Lower Manhattan and visited Ground Zero, the place where the Twin Towers once stood before 9/11. The place had an eerie feeling to it, but I think what the American people have done with this memorial is fantasic. Where each tower once stood it has been replaced with a massive water fountain and there are all the names of the people who tragically lost their lives in stone slabs placed around the water feature. I saw a name of a lady which also said with her unborn child, so sad. After Ground Zero, we walked around Battery Park in the sunshine and decided ... read more

Today was going to be my first time flying without having someone I know with me and, being that I'm a nervous flyer, I choose a 7hr 30min flight, great! Anyway it all worked out ok in the end as this lovely Scottish lady was sitting next to me on the flight and she too didnt like flyng and so it helped with take off as I had someone to talk to and it distracted me. I was also spolit for film choice and watched Taken 2, Oz: The Great and Powerful and the Hobbit. I needed to get a taxi to my friends apartment after arriving safely at Newark Liberty International Aiport, New Jersey. I was greeted by a guy that I thought was a taxi driver and he took me to a pick up ... read more
